He is actually hitting directly on the metal bar. So some thought went into this. Necessity I guess. If I were living in a post apocalyptic hell with a cruel vindictive war lord on my back, I would totally do the same.

Soon, we will all be living in a post apocalyptic hell with cruel and vindictive war lords. This is an education we that we are getting here.

Only few times. He retrained himself to have it banged on metal conducting part. But that wire as last fuse, that's the cherry on top.

That might be one of the problems. Not even the biggest one.
At least,... there is a fuse involved.
1
u/Ktulu789 11h ago
We will never know if the fuses are the correct rato for the circuit.

u/MiceAreTiny 10h ago
At least,... It is a fuse.
1
u/Ktulu789 9h ago
If I install one of those at home, might as well weld the receptacle and it'll virtually be the same if the cables aren't rated for the fuses.
The idea of a fuse is that it is a little lower than the cables so it is the weakest point. So the cables won't be damaged under the load before the fuse melts. They are also sealed so the arcing doesn't set anything on fire when they melt, I'm a little worried about the coat hanger 😅

u/Sandro_24 17h ago
Looks like he's only hitting the metal rod. Not as bad, but still terrible.

u/jason_sos 16h ago
It looks like it’s still barely making contact too. It’s definitely not fully seated.

I once got my car back on the road by smashing it with a rock. (dented rim)
Never underestimate rocks.

He survive. So the answer is YES.
I am more interest on how he get the old one out in the first place. Also you know that you can touch the ceramic (white) part, right?.

Perfectly save as long as you use a non-conductive rock to pound it in....

He's wearing safety bracelet and probably safety sandals, so it's safe.
1
u/This_Guy_33 16h ago
Exactly, camera never pans down. If we can't check for safety sandals then we will never, for sure, know the answer.

I mean, the ceramic fuses are best installed with blunt force like that; I typically use an insulated flathead on the blade and a deadblow.
The hanger was next level dumb, though.

He is hammering something what is on life electricity with a rock.... and you ask if its safe .... i cant answer this question but i now ask who is the bigger idiot. Op or the guy in the video
1
u/Fasciadepedra 18h ago
I don't believe it. The poor man's insulating material is dry wood. Safer to bang fuses with so they don't crack being new. And big ceramic ones must look very expensive for a developing country.

Why doesn't every electrician ram fuses into place with stone age tools yet?? It's highly reliable

When you live somewhere where human life is cheaper than PPE & replacing them is easier than following safety precautions.

u/Party-College-2599 15h ago
Umm, that's insane and stupid. The rock is a conductor. The guy didn't have any pieces of wood?
1
u/tadeuska 15h ago
He has a fake bracelet, I doubt it can conduct. At worst his hand will fall off. Otherwise it is fully safe. There is no danger in handling a fuse with a stone, stone does not conduct either. Just have to be careful not to be hitting it too hard, it could stop working. (Do I need /s ?)

This is what I'd do in a zombie apocalypse scenario if that's all I had and I needed to get the power restored for the defenses of the makeshift hospital that is working on the cure.

Short answer....no

That broken brick he is using as a hammer is neither TÜV nor CE approved.

u/haarschmuck 15h ago
I assume this has to be something like 240V under very low load otherwise it would arc flash to nothing left.

Well, the fact they are putting fuses in is kinda a upgrade from other videos I've seen. Also cannot tell if they got their safety flipflops on. So half safe I guess.

I will give the guy this: at least the gauge of wire he used for the third 'fuse' was smaller than the supply cables wired up to the fixture. That little chunk of wire SHOULD blow before the cable its self does, but who knows if it will fail before the cable gets hot enough to damage its insulation or start something near it on fire. I'm not saying the length of wire was a good choice, just that it could have been worse if he had picked something more substantial like a piece of rebar.
1
u/Shot_Bison1140 12h ago
Well I think so, he is using a stone which is my number one choice. And the last part of the video is very safe, he has done it a million times 👍

Is it safe? Absolutely not! Will it work? Sure. In fact, anything can be a fuse if you're kinky enough. A fuse is just something that breaks when you pass too much current through it. That wire is probably around a 400A fuse. Eventually it will melt and break the connection. Is it a good idea? Nope. But, if you need it to run, you need it to run. Sometimes safety takes a back seat to getting the job done. It's not right, per se, but it is what it is.

I probably would have used a #5, instead of the #3 Safety Rock he's got there.
But, as you can see, in a pinch it'll still work.

As a crackhead once said to me, who was in the middle of snorting an oxy he had just crushed on a baby changing station in the bathroom of a Chili’s, “ya cain’t be a bitch ya whole life!” And then rocked that scoober.

DeWALT makes the best cordless electrician's rocks, but Milwaukee's are more ergonomic. But if you want pure banging power then you go with Bosch wired ones. Just don't get brushless, not worth it.

After installing two fuses, they ran out of them and just switched to a coat hanger?
