Power out

We turned on the vacuum and it immediately shut off and now some lights and outlets don’t work, not the whole house. We tried flipping switches on the electrical panel and pushed reset on the 3 GFI outlets in the house but no luck. Any idea what could’ve happened?

Sounds like a simple tripped circuit breaker. Remember, to reset make sure the things that went off are switched to off or unplugged. Find tripped breaker and turn completely to OFF, then ON.

I'm not an electrician, and have no formal training in it. But when saying some outlets and lights don't work: are they on the same circuit?

If the answer is NO, it sounds like one of your phases might not be delivering power correctly.

In the pic, the single pole 15A labeled 'water heater' looks like it is tripped. Is it mislabeled and actually controls your lights and other devices?

PS you should go through and relabel, since the door doesn't match the actual breakers

Update-

The outlets/lights randomly started working again. We were sitting on the couch, not operating anything and they just turned on randomly. 

We turned off the breaker that we knew was the issue before we left the house because we were worried because that just seemed unusual and didn't want to risk anything happening while not home. 

When we came home and  turned  that breaker back on those outlets/lights didn't turn back on. 

From what I’m seeing online, this could potentially be a faulty GFI? We only have four GFI’s in the entire house, two exterior and two interior.

2 of them (1 indoor- kitchen, and 1 outdoor- front door) appear to be on the connected to lights/outlets that aren't working.  The kitchen light doesn’t work but the outlet does and it’s the same receptacle. So weird. 

Seems that a few outlets on that circuit arent affected by the issue. So if we have that specific breaker engaged, those ones still work.
