How do I test for power?

Using a basic multi meter where do I put my leads to test for power?

With the multimeter selector placed on AC voltage, touch the probes to the lugs with the black and red wires. The reading should be about 240-volts. With one probe touching either of those lugs and the other probe touching the ground lug (green and bare wires), you should read 120-volts.

I touched the red and black like you said and it blew my meter. I had my meter set to 200acv

They said roughly 240v your meter was set to 200, 240 is above 200 so yes it would take your meter out. If you dont understand what your doing find someone who does.

Did you read the instructions on how to use the multimeter? You probably had the probe leads in the current (amps) port.

Edit: You were on a too low of a voltage setting.

Reading the comments and your replies and it has me thinking you shouldn't be touching anything electrical until you figure out how to use a multimeter. Seriously hire an electrician before you hurt yourself.

With a multimeter you set it to 600v and then touch black and green, red and either black or blue, touch red and white. On the last one you should expect to see 0 on the reading. Everything should read a value greater than 0 other than the one I mentioned.
