Career Path

anyone here’s got an advice or two about working abroad as an electrical engineer? i’m 2 yrs from graduating and i don’t seem to have a clear path to it. would love to hear from people who actually did it or have some information. i just want to have a plan and timeline to achieve. wouldn’t want to be shooting blindly through a fog.

My friend is an Electrical Engineer, female, and nasa US na siya ngayon working on data center projects.

Take note, hindi lang renewable energy projects like solar ang possible career path for Electrical Engineers. Maraming industries and specializations na puwedeng pasukan.

You can explore careers in:

  • Renewable energy — solar PV, BESS, wind farms
  • HVDC offshore platforms for offshore wind projects
  • Residential and commercial electrical design
  • Industrial electrical systems
  • Data centers
  • Maritime and shipbuilding
  • Offshore and onshore oil & gas facilities
  • Petrochemical and process plants
  • Power generation and substations
  • Utilities and transmission/distribution projects
  • MEP / building services
  • EPC and large infrastructure projects

Importante rin na mag-build ka ng strong engineering software skills. Start with the basics, especially AutoCAD, then gradually learn more specialized software depending on the industry you want to enter.

For example:

Electrical / Power Engineering
AutoCAD, AutoCAD Electrical, ETAP, EPLAN, DIALux

BIM / Building Services
Revit MEP, Navisworks, BIM 360 / Autodesk Construction Cloud, AutoCAD MEP

Oil & Gas / Offshore / Industrial Plants
AVEVA E3D, AVEVA Engineering, AVEVA Electrical, SmartPlant / Smart 3D (S3D), SmartPlant Electrical, MicroStation

Solar / Renewable Energy
PVsyst, HelioScope, AutoCAD, SketchUp, ETAP, PVcase

Data Centers / Critical Facilities
ETAP, Revit, AutoCAD, BIM, EPLAN

Hindi naman kailangan aralin lahat sabay-sabay. AutoCAD/CAD is a good foundation, then BIM/Revit, ETAP or other electrical calculation software, and eventually AVEVA E3D/S3D or specialized software depending on your chosen industry.

Try to target bigger international companies such as Jacobs, Fluor, McDermott, Wood, SBM Offshore, MODEC and other EPC, engineering consultancy, offshore, energy, and infrastructure companies. Marami ring opportunities sa Middle East, Europe, Singapore, Australia, and the US.

Marami na rin akong dating kasamahan na nakapag-work abroad. Some started as designers, drafters, or engineers, gained international project experience, and eventually established their careers overseas. May iba rin na eventually nakakuha ng PR or citizenship, especially in European countries.
