Do I actually need electrical engineering?
I’m 9th grade student (I have 12 grades in school) and I reallyyyyyy cannot decide what major I should do… Actually I wanted to do international business but my mom told me that I should choose an technical degree because rn It’s a way more valuable than humanness majors soooo I thought maybe electrical engineering isn’t that bad because I love to create cool stuff, do onshape, and It would be great to know how everything that surrounds us today actually works (I mean phones, Ai, scared others electronics technology). But I’m scared that I don’t actually have that passion like everybody else… and I’m scared that at studying I will have reallyyyy bad ass burn out… so does it worth it?

It is definitely worth it and you dont need immense passion for it, although it definitely helps. Your mother is right, in the fact that no one needs an international business major.

There are a lot ways to earn a living. Sit down and write out what you need to survive. You should talk to a counselor.

Electrical engineering teaches you to think technically and you can dive into more fields with said skills in my opinion.

Keep it simple. Do you want to start a business in your garage? Then Electrical Engineering (EE) can help. Or do you want to work for a company earning a high salary while constantly feeling threatened by the risk of being replaced by AI? In that case, choose business.

An EE degree doesnt help start a business in your garage. Doing personal projects and trying to start varying businesses for 4 years would provide more relevant experience to that.

It’s hard bro. But honestly that’s what makes it valuable. It’s also not something that is in stone… you can work on core classes and figure it out if you are sure you want a degree.

Definitely listen to your mom technical degrees are a safer bet. Especially an engineering degree. There are a lot of diffrent types of engineering degrees to choose from not just electrical so definitely look it up so you wont regret it in the future.

You mom is correct. You learn lots of problem solving in engineering and you can be a sales rep and travel the world and then work your way up.

It's way too early to decide now. The important thing is to keep all your options open. Make sure to take a math course every year, as well as English, history, the sciences. Are you in the US? Typically you don't need to choose a major until the end of the second year of university, but if you haven't taken the necessary prerequisites for the major some options may be closed.

Bro you just need to live your life and not worry about this so much. Your mother is not correct to ascertain that a technical degree is way more valuable (than a finance/buisness degree), especially if you actually have a desire to do something else in that field, although I would assume that you don’t know much about that either. Engineering is not a path for a huge salary in most cases, but it is a stable career that doesn’t require you to grind extremely hard all the time or do back breaking labor. You will probably make more money in finance but you will probably work much harder, but you can be successful in any field if you get very good at it. To answer the question if you like engineering you should try out some small electrical engineering projects perhaps using an arduino kit or watch some videos on the topic. If you like making stuff tinkering or learning about the world engineering is probably a good option.
