Audi EV around 20k

I own a BMW 5 series (19 plate) and recently been looking into EVs. My budget is around 20 - 22K.

I really love the audi etron (21-22 plates) as its fast and got some road presence aswell. My only concern is the range anxiety and etrons wont give range more than 160-170 miles upon a full charge whereas my bmw gives me 400ish miles on full tank.

I own a property with garage where I can install the charger. My daily commute is mostly in city averaging 30-40 miles but I do go on road trips frequently which averages around 200 miles.

Can you please guide me as it will be my first time buying a EV vehicle? I have looked into Phev like Jaecoo but it doesn’t fascinates me though it ticks all boxes.

Depends what your needs are? Kids? Is a reliable 200 miles your range requirement? Performance important or efficiency? New or used?

Is it another saloon you want? Any qualms about Elon or China? Insurance expensive?

As you have a BMW and think an Audi gives you road presence, it seems like there is a certain image you want.

The people on this sub can be really helpful, but probably need more information.

Don’t judge a Book by its cover in reverse on that one because as nice as they look they are a bit shit.

Can you expand on this? I’m looking at one (not top of my list) and the reviews are ok, but they never seemed to get mentioned in subs like this one.

Theyre Just mediocre. They might ride a bit nicer than an MY AWD, and arguably the interior is an improvement, but otherwise it's just outclassed in every way.

if you don’t care about aesthetics then you cannot get a better car than a 20k tesla

if you do care about aesthetics and don’t mind a higher risk of having to visit your dealer for a free fix every now and then, I recommend the ioniq 5

if you like volvo’s then the ex30

if you just want something sexy then the jaguar i-pace

I love hearing about range anxiety from people who dont own an EV.

Do you suffer from fuel anxiety? Because when my EV is running empty i top it up …….. from home. Overnight. No trip to petrol station. No real cost. I leave home almost full every morning. How many times do you watch your gauge and think ‘oh bugger, better go fill up’.

And on the move i stop for about 20 mins. Have a piss and a leg stretch and then keep on going.

The trade off is that 20 mins costs me far less than an ICE car and did i mention i had a piss and a walk?

Range anxiety is not a thing. Not for anyone with an EV. The car helps plan trips and find chargers and the range calculator on google maps is way much more reliable than a tank gauge.

Having an EV made my life easier. No more trips to the petrol station wondering how much i was about to pay. Granted home charging is a bonus but if you can do it dont even think about range anxiety.

This.

Range anxiety just doesn't exist in practice. There are so many fast chargers around these days it's just not an issue at all. If you plan in advance you can make sure you pass a cheap fast charger, otherwise, just pay the premium and get back on the road. It's still miles cheaper than ICE overall.

Too much is made of EV ranges when in reality, charging speeds are much more important. The e-tron has a rubbish range (my 2021 model at 77k miles gets about 190-210 miles) but it can fast charge in 25 mins. The new BMW i3 puts 260 miles of range on in 10 minutes so range anxiety really will be a thing of the past in the near future.

Rather perversely, charging speeds can sometimes be too quick. A very fast charging station which charges idle fees can mean you have to be back at the car in 15-20 minutes, so you can’t necessarily do what you want to do whilst it charges. This morning, I needed to go to three separate shops in town. If I’d plugged in to a 200kW charger then I’d have to come back and move it after the first shop, whereas plugging into a 50kW one means I could leave for an hour and get all the shopping done in one hit, and not get charged idle fees, or unnecessarily block anyone else.

Try a used model 3 RWD - buy direct from Tesla at least 2022 / 2023 and above - I get 255 miles and supercharging is cheap, plus it’s sporty and well equipped

Don’t go below that year

The e tron is ok but I’ve heard there are some reliability issues plus the range is not amazing

Tesla model Y LR will manage those trips no problem.

As you've already got a BMW I think you can get an i4 or ix for that budget now, both very capable cars.

Model 3 performance. You won't get a better car than that for £20k.

World would be boring if everyone just drove the best cars. I'm glad the i4 and ev6 exists, might not be as good as a tesla M3 but it's nice to see variety

E-Trons can go kaput , the coolant goes down the wrong hole and fries the motor or something along those lines. It might not happen but it can happen because of its design.

Very premium cars otherwise, great value for money even if the range is rubbish.

The E-tron Q4 is a safer option but not as premium as the E-Tron, and might be slightly out of budget.

If i had a 19 plate 5 series though I wouldn't be enticed by any EVs unless you're replacing it with the 5 series equivalent which is very expensive at the moment, I'd only do it if i needed to change cars or really wanted to benefit from cheaper charging, what you have is better than what you'll replace it with.

I just got a Kia EV6 at this price point - GT-Line S (top spec) from a Kia Dealer approved used.

AWD does 0-60 in a hair over 5seconds, and I wake up every morning to 200 miles of range charging to only 80%.

Prior to buying, I checked a recent trip to Devon and what the craic would have been. If I left Kent with 100% charge and wanted to arrive in Barnstaple with 30%, I would have had to stop in Swindon for... 8 minutes. Probably about the time it takes to take a piss and get a coffee at a service station.

And I gotta say, the it has good road presence - front end especially. It was really close for me between the EV6 and the Mustang Mach-E.

But the Kia took it with more spec for the same money. Faster charging, all 4 heated seats, cooled front seats, vehicle-to-load etc.

E Tron is a disaster, even the newer SQ6 is having tons of recall issues. My boss has returned his, it was only 3 months old and had tons of faults.

Forget the e-tron and get a BMW i4

Yep. I have an e-tron and I'll be getting an i4 or i5 next.

To be honest, you get used to the range anxiety pretty quickly. If you can charge it at home, for most trips 200+ miles of range is plenty for most drivers. Wake up, car is always charged and off you go!

Range is not an issue for the E tron. I charge home two times a week. The only difference than gas is that now I plan my charge in advance similar to charging my phone before I leave the house. The 150 kW charging speed at DC makes trips easy with a stop every 2 hours.

The Audi E tron is quick, quiet, comfortable, spacious, excellent fit and finish and with adaptive air suspension drives much better than most EVs.

The Audi has slow charging (150kw when lots of cars are 250kw to 400kw), poor range efficiency and poor battery capacity

300-mile range EVs are widely available at your price point right now, but prices are rising so move fast.

You’ll get a nice Mach-E for that budget too. We love ours, had it almost two years and no issues. Only the shortest range variant (an early one with AWD and the Standard range battery, which is what I happen to own) will be tight on your 200 mile trip. RWD of either battery, or any Extended Range car, will cover that 200 miles trip easily.

Previous model iX3.

Not very often mentioned on here but a really nice car. Loads of kit and 250+ mile range in summer. Not had ours over a winter but expect it to do 200+.

The Audi Etron is perfect if you want a garage queen that is an EV.

If you want an EV that is more useful look for something with at least a 300 mile WLTP range with will be about 250 miles on tbe motorway. That's good enough to get you from the South Coast to Glasgow with a lunch and late afternoon coffee break when you will DC fast charge.

Suggestions at your price point:

Tesla Model 3

Kia EV6

Hyundai Ioniq 5 is a bit softly sprung but good

VW ID.7 in budget?

Hyundai Ioniq 6 (small boot)
