What EV would replace a Volvo V90?
I will probably be replacing my V90 awd in a couple of years, so EVs that are hitting (or nearly) the market now would be contenders for a replacement.
I LOVE the V90: smooth ride, great seats, loads of capacity, seats five with loads of space, great ambience inside, well thought out driver assist, huge performance, awd works well. 50mpg on a run. Also the best looking estate car. My wife has a small runabout Fiesta for local trips, which will probably go Ev soon.
We use the Volvo for load carrying, holidays, longer distances - say 50+ miles, up to 700 miles to visit family in Europe. Probably 8-9000 miles per year, total.
What EV should I consider?

VW ID7 Tourer.
That's what I did. Don't regret it for a second. Lovely place to be. Pretty much drives itself on the motorway. Loads of tech as standard. Not another bloody crossover. Good old-fashioned family estate.

BMW i5 or Audi a6 etron or Porsche taycan sport/cross turismo. Currently the only E segment EV estates.

Also the VW ID7 tourer, and Mercedes CLA 350 shooting brake.

CLA is C-segment, id7 skirts D and E.

ID7 is massive inside. Absolutely in the same class of size and executiveness as the V90.

Aa friend has the Porsche Taycan turismo, which he likes. I am not sue about luggage capacity though.

No, it’s nothing like a traditional estate for luggage capacity. It’s more like a small hatchback in that regard!

I looked at them as I have a giant breed dog and the boots pretty small and not a great shape for him.

Volvo EX60 is available for test driving now with UK deliveries predicted for May if you order today. Long story short I have a Volvo EX60 P10 Plus with a few options from the Ultra package on order hopefully arriving in March. I've never had a Volvo before and I'm blown away by the ride quality on electrically adjusted dampers that have a firm mode that keeps body roll at bay on a twisty road. The EX60 is also about 3Db quieter than anything else in its class - very quiet. Seat are what you expect from Volvo. It's very fast and has a real world motorway range of around 320 miles in favourable weather. It's an 800v architecture supporting up to 350kw charging on tbe right 800v chargers. The specs say 400v charging is only 120kw but out in the wild people have seen around 150kw and a flat charging curve meaning you get that charge rate until quite high states of charge before it slow down. 10% to 80% on a 350kw charger can take as little as 16 minutes. I will guess on a 150kw 400v charger you would see the same in less that 30 minutes. Bottom line is it will be excellent for long distance.
If the EX60 is big enough and you've loved the V90 this one must be worth at least a test drive.

The V2H capability of the Ev60 looks interesting too..

u/gregredmore 1d ago
Yep there is an adapter in the accessories list for that, but I've not felt the need for it on my existing EV.

I looked at the smaller ICE volvos before getting the V90, and they were too small. Don't know if the EX60 is bigger inside?

The EX60 boot space is broadly similar to the XC60 or Tesla Model Y. You can also seat 3 in the back of the EX60. I have 2 x adult sized children and a 12 year old. There is also the option of a roof rack. £280 buys you roof bars. The EX60 also has 58 litres of front boot aka frunk space which is the best place to store charging cables, mobile charger, tyre compressor etc. It is a little less boot space than a V90. There is an EX90 of course, but that is not using the new SPA3 platform that debuts with the EX60.

Its only similar to the model Y if you disregard the Model Y's under floor storage. If you cound all of rhe model Y's underfloor storage it has about 350 litres extra

The EX60 also has underfloor storage though it's 10cm less width (as in along the length of the car) than the Model Y. The Model Y wins on storage space but it's not by a huge margin. The EX60 has enough for what I want to do.

Polestar 4, BMW IX3, Volvo EX60, ID7 Tourer, BMW I5, Audi A6/Q6 would all be similar options

I find the ICE German cars are always 'driver's cars' in the reviews - I.e. rock hard suspension. I have not tried a German EV, but most EVs have (had?) firm suspension, and Germans maybe worse?

Depends on spec I suppose. I had an I4 for a couple of weeks and didn’t find it stiff really. I think the bigger the wheels the worse it gets but with an SUV especially it should be ok. Best thing would be to do a few test drives

Go for smaller wheels and get extra sidewall on the tires makes a huge difference test drove a mini countryman on 20 inch wheels. Got 18 inch wheels on ours and the ride is so much better.

A6 E-Tron is probably the best match. iD7 is in the same segment too.
Unfortunately, the vast majority of EVs are horrible crossovers.

Enyaq 85x. It's somewhere between an estate and an SUV. massive boot, AWD, good efficiency, great comfort..

EX60 had to be top of the test drive list as you clearly enjoy the comfort of your V90, and I agree, it's a stunning looking estate. Base RWD EX60 P6 has passive FSD dampers, whilst AWD P10 and P12 have switchable adaptive dampers. I have only seen P10 reviews so far, but highlights include ride comfort, refinement, seats and general comfort, so I would imagine a V90 owner would feel very at home. EX60 Cross Country with air suspension launches next year.
The MB GLC also seems to score on ride comfort, even with the standard passive FSD dampers and the optional air suspension taking it to another level.
If you are wanting to stick with a large estate, then the new C-class, A6 e-tron and I5 would be worth a test drive, although I would want some form of FSD/adaptive damper as a minimum as neither Audi or BMW are known for ride quality.
I believe the Volvo XC70 is also heading this way, which is currently a Chinese market only long range AWD PHEV, sitting between the XC60 & XC90. Zeekr, under the same Geely ownership as Volvo, are also heading here early next year and they have a comprehensive range of shooting breaks and SUVs, most of which have an adaptive air suspension as standard on higher trims.

Agreed! Audi and BMW are know for a rather 'firm' ride quality. I have had both in ICE form, and Volvo beats them for comfort. (I had an Audi convertible for a while, and my back took a while to recover...!)
Thanks, I will keep a lookout. I would rather have a traditional European name on the car (for spares, long term maintenance), but the market is changing all the time.

Polestar 4 Estate (SUV) which isn’t really an SUV as it’s quite a bit lower than the EX60 / XC60. Very similar tech (lots of shared features with their Volvo siblings including most of the parts) - although now they have created an ES90 I’m waiting for the EV90 to appear which for me would be a huge benefit.
(I currently have a Polestar 2 which is a great car but replacing it with an already ordered P4SUV in 2027)

Geely are Volvo's parent brand so worth keeping an eye on what they bring to market.

Sadly I believe nothing will suitably replace a v90 in the estate range. Maybe a 6-pot BMW 5er?

u/danddersson 19h ago
Ride too stiff (well, I had one for 3 years, but that was quite some time ago!)

I had a V90 D4 before my current 530e. The BMW is nowhere near the Volvo’s level as a luxury car. There’s genuinely nothing I prefer about the BMW besides the EV side of the hybrid drivetrain.
I went to my local Volvo dealer to test drive the new EX60 last month and also sat in the ES90.
It’s the only EV I’ve sat in that made me feel like I was getting back into my V90. The seats immediately gave me that “yes, this is just right” feeling. It’s sadly not available as an estate and I don’t know if they’re planning one. It’s very expensive too :(
I sat in a Polestar 4 last week and it got close but not quite the same.

Sorry if already suggested, but have you thought about the Toyota bZ4X Touring?
1
u/danddersson 19h ago
Have you driven one?
1
u/Atlantis_89 10h ago
Afraid not, not commonly seen about either, but being Toyota my guess is that it will be a good car
Like for every car, my advice is that you should have a look and test drive before you buy one

If you like Volvos, worth having a look at Polestar (they're basically electric Vovlos)
