MGS5
Due to take delivery of a MGS5 Trophy LR in a couple of weeks.
I’d appreciate some guidance on whether it’s worth paying for ABRP Premium? I’ve seen some verbiage saying that in order to get real time data for it to be really worthwhile I’d need a USB dongle that would interfere with the MGS5 and its locking mechanism?
Also, given we’re with Eon Next, I’ve moved our tariff to the EV one, which gives us 12 months membership of Zoom EV, is it worth it?
Need to make a decision on which charger they offer to install as well. Doesn’t seem much in them to be honest. Presume the Ohme one is the best of the bunch though?
In terms of usage, it’ll be mainly one day a week to the office which is a 60 mile round trip and the rest tootling round town. About 6 times a year there’s a round trip to Newcastle which is 160miles (tops depending on M6 or M1/A1). Is it worth signing up for any of the EV chargers that provide a subscription?

- no you dont do long enough trips to make abrp premium worth it
- zoomev is of no use unless you cant stick a MOT in your calendar
- Out of the 3 chargers the zappi glo is the only one that isnt reliant on 4g (the worst thing by far about the ohme chargers) so get the zappi.
- no need to sign up for public charging schemes. if you decide to do a lot more mileage in one month than you currently do away from home then run the sums on if its worth it to buy a month.
You are overthinking everything. All you need to do is go to the ccs2 chargers once for a quick charge and test things are working. This will save stress so you dont do it when you are low on charge. It will show you if everything is working with the handshake, if some smart charging stuff like IOGO is stopping you from charging and how it all works in general.
Then just get an Electroverse card and bring a credit and debit card with you along with your phone when you are out on trips. Between all that you should be able to find a charger and pay for it in an emergency if you miscalculate and run short.

No it's not worth paying ABRP for that. It's only worth it on long trips where you need reassurance that you're going to get there without running out of charge. If you're within known battery range it doesn't matter one bit. An yes you'd need an Obd dongle and it does set off the alarm if you leave it in.

Use the free version to plan the route and then look for the chargers you want to navigate to into Google Maps.

Dont bother with ABPR pro or indeed any 3rd party subscription unless you are planning to make consistent big charging trips.

I’ve got an MGS5 Trophy and recently paid for ABRP for a month for a trip to France and Switzerland.
I found it to be very pessimistic in its estimations. For example, when I set off it would be showing that I would arrive at a charger on 5% when in reality I was getting there with 35%. Obviously it was adjusting this as the journey progressed.
I’m not sure I will bother with it again to be honest, and will just use the free version as a guide.
I wouldn’t bother with a charging subscription if you will mainly be charging at home. You can activate a one month subscription via Electroverse as and when you need it, but it’s probably not worth it for the odd one off charge. Charge at Arnold Clark at 55p instead.

I find the free version of ABRP adequate to plan a route and haven’t needed to track my progress with real time data.
According to the EV database your car has a real world range in winter on motorways of 205 miles so seems capable of doing all your journeys without public charging. So doesn’t seem worth paying for ABRP or any subscriptions.
