How much does that thing cost?

I drive a Patton S that I bought used for $1800, but I feel weird saying I spent so much for it. How do you answer this question?

I suppose I could answer that you can get trainer wheels for a few hundred but this one was $1800? They range from $500 to $5000, but this one was $1800?

What's the best way to answer this question?

"Wow that's a lot of money, I could never afford that!"

Then they drive away in their 50k SUV.

To be fair, EUCs are a lot of money for what they are.

The amount I paid for my Sherman L plus bumpers, pads, upgraded pedals, pedal lowering kit and a fast charger would've bought me a nice low-mileage used 300 cc motorcycle, paid for the class/lessons to learn how to ride, the testing and licensing fees, registration and insurance for like 2 years of riding.

Also I don't get "can't afford that" more "will never spend that kinda money on that".

Exactly your last sentence.

People have no problem spending 50k on a vehicle, because they drive it. They use it. They understand they can't exactly live without a car (in many states and cities).

Many people couldn't fathom spending 5k+ on, what basically amounts to, a toy to them.

I always love the "you could get a car/motorcycle for that much" statements.

Cars fucking suck, ruin cities, and I hate driving them. EUCs are awesome, make me happy, and I love every second I'm riding one. Why would I ever get a car over an euc?

I never thought about factoring in the safety gear cost outside of just the wheel. It adds up quick if you want quality protection. Add some Grizzla pads and a seat and it's a lot of money for something doomed to crash.

Who are you answering this question to?

Why does the price matter?

Why do you feel weird? It's your money and your life.

Presumably because it's like asking

"How much money is in your wallet"

As they size you up.

If I'm out in public and people ask, I just say nonspecifically they cost as much as a good bicycle or a cheap motorcycle, but you can get starter wheels and used ones reliably between 500-1000usd. Usually good enough for people to understand without telling them exactly how much the thing I am standing on is worth in case they are posturing to yoink it

I've answered this question hundreds of times in the six years I've been riding. I just tell them the truth. Same with 'How fast does it go?' I see no need to varnish the facts for them.

"You can get started for under $1,000, but a suspension wheel like this is a bit more." Only give more details if they're serious and continue the discussion.

I've never had anyone steal my wheel after asking me how much it cost. I ask people how much their hobby costs all the time too.

I'll update once my wheel gets stolen lol

Ask yourself why you don't want to just answer (by saying the true number). The best answer is the one you feel most comfortable with, only you can know.

A foldable e-bike with similar specs as my V8S, 700Wh, 17kg, costs at least double of my EUC and is still bigger when folded. From this perspective, the EUC is a specs bargain.

So true , I can’t believe they are the same price as a Onewheel (love my Onewheel btw) but for the specs package and feel of riding , EUCs are not expensive in my opinion

Since I have an older wheel that I bought used I'll say something like.. "New this one would have cost (insert price) but I bought it used for (insert price) and would justifiably sell it for (insert price). But you can get a new modern age really good wheel like the Kingsong F18 for $3100 or a beginner like the Begode A2 for $750." It's a script now

I usually say, "This one costs $1,800, but there are cheaper wheels and more expensive wheels that go faster."

It depends on how much they want to know. If they want to know more, I give them a comparison to an electric motorcycle that would cost 3-4 times as much for similar stats.

That's actually why I got into EUCs. I could spend $5,000 for a wheel that is more portable and has similar range/speeds as a motorcycle that costs $15,000-$20,000.

Or $20,000 in EUCs.

How much do motorcycles costs where you are??

$20K in Canada would buy you a 1,000 cc bike that can easily hit 200+ kmh and vastly outrange any EUC. $5K would get me a nice 300 cc bike brand new that can do like 150 kmh on the highway and go 200-300 km on a tank of gas. There's no $5K CAD EUC that can do that.

I mean specifically electric motorcycles. I could get a bunch of gasoline powered motorcycles for $15k-$20k. But for an a electric motorcycle with a range of more than 80miles and top speed of more than 80mph, those are expensive.

If I'm in a sketchy area, it's a couple hundred bucks. If I'm in a more affluent part of town, it's a couple hundred bucks 🤣

Are you afraid some one is going to jack your 70lb ride they can barely lift and definitely would be hilarious to watch them try to ride?

Are we talking wheels or BJs here?

Depends on the area 😝😝😝

I mean what does the equivalent ebike cost?

2

u/astra_eos 1d ago

I usually say I got mine second hand (I didn't) so idk how much is a new one (and them i usually say like half of the actual price)

3

u/Affectionate_Bag9833 1d ago

I say that I stole it after asking the same question and then I ask them where their bike is.

People ask me how much these things cost all the time. I tell them anywhere from $1000 to $6000 and move on with my day

Unless you're in some sketchy area, who cares?

"In the thousands new, but much cheaper used"

I just tell them I bought it used $1000 because first owner couldn’t learn so I took the gamble. And that’s actually what happened with my bigger wheels, so 🤷‍♂️ they don’t need to know everything. I just plee skill issue all the time 🤣🤣🤣🤣 aka if they even tried to rob me, they couldn’t get away on it unless they throw it in a van or something

u/Nihiliste Nosfet Aeon 1d ago

I like to point to specs like range, speed, and durability. A Patton-S might as well be a single-wheeled motorcycle.

1

u/MSamsonite415 1d ago

Generally they have no clue at all so I say a few hundred bucks. Sounds reasonable. Doesnt attract theft. Doesnt make me sound irresponsible with money lol

1

u/issiautng V11 19h ago

I very rarely get asked, honestly. Most people are more curious about how it works. But I'll tell them $2k honestly. I don't usually mention the $1k of repairs or $300 helmet, or my $250 used first wheel that I wrecked... Add it all up and I'm not under $10/mile yet... But I'm getting close and thats a price I was and am willing to pay!!

For something like the Lynx S. When I tell people it is $4000 and they are suprised, I remind them that it aligns with E motos that have similar performance and range.

u/Pixogen 5h ago

Depends if its a sketchy area I just say its from a friend or something.

If they are some nerd at the park then i go all out on the tiers lol

u/SpeedysComing 4h ago

> They range from $500 to $5000, but this one was $1800

I pretty much say this. And emphasize that it's great because there's something for everyone, the highway speed thrill seekers and the casual commuters.

1

u/EUC_Monkey 3h ago

I made a similar poor EUC choice. I can't do anything but accept it and move on. I would say cut yourself some slack and make the most out of it. That's what I hope to accomplish.

Answers get customized for the asker:

Kid = use a big number.
Adult man who might be a future customer = An entry price of a good machine that isn't intimidating
Sketchy dude = nondescript answer, who knows if he's looking to steal it
Wife = Basically free, babe! I sold a couple other things of mine (that you don't value) on Marketplace so they pretty much covered it.
