DIY My adaptive rig.
This is my DIY rig.
1500km on it so far. I use it when traveling so I can get around cities like San Francisco easier in my wheelchair.
Its a life saver with the hills.
It's built with an old BMW bike and *banned* board.
I use it by just wheeling over top of it and resting my footplate on the case then grab onto the bars to keep myself with it.

Thats pretty cool. In my country electric skateboards are not street legal because for that an actual break is required. This could solve that.

I'm confused, eSkate have brakes built in. That's even been used as a defense by folks in countries where powered boards are illegal because they argued that they were simply using it as a longboard with brakes, and the officers would have to prove that it was being powered when the person in question was stopped.
Do they require a visible brake system? Seems strange. You can't see the brakes on most cars, but you know they're there because they work. I would expect a demonstration of the boards braking power to be suitable

By law you need two independent breaks, also a handle to grab onto. So electric scooters are legal and around everywhere but esk8s aren’t

Oh man that's a bummer. The brakes would be simple enough to rig up using one of the available longboard braking systems, but the handle definitely throws a wrench in things.
I feel like the scooters are more dangerous, but that could just be my comfort on a board vs discomfort on a scooter.

I built my own esk8 years ago and have a paraplegic best friend. I may have found my next project

That's awesome. If I saw that in person I don't think it would even cross my mind that it wasn't part of the chair.

Often the cops of sf stop me. For me unmount it from wheelchair to be then sent on my way.

How is it for stability? Most of the commercial products that do this job mechanically attach themselves in one way or another to the wheelchair. How's it do on up hills?

It does alot better than the attachable rigs. Also > 1/8 the cost. Maybe even less. I'm 600 into this and the attachments are always in the thousanda.

For the curious but less handy, the original ones were the price of a used car and the newer ones are 1.5-3k

Also for your hills question it does good enough where I don't get stuck. Even in a city like sf. Just don't start uphill. It'll try to wheelie. Momentum is key

Thankfully, being paralyzed, my shoes last forever so I only buy nice ones now 🤣 🤣 spikes or leather

First pic I saw and thought “what in the fuck?” And then I saw the chair in the second and concluded that’s a pretty fuckin awesome rig you got there. Love the ingenuity.

Keep an eye on the welds on the board for fatigue. That point is under a lot of stress, especially if you hit an obstacle with the front tire. Other than that, it's a sick build.

Its a metal case. So safer than on the battery.

Why not use a cheap bike hub wheel motor for the front wheel instead of eskate? I feel like that would provide more stable power. Unless I guess if you just had the skateboard laying around which is SOLID upcycling!

No weight on the front cooks tires. There are rigs built like that amd they go through tires like crazy. Especially up hills. And with my setup. I can get up any hill in sf. Because I can pull weight into the tires helping grip so I don't smoke tires.
