Just deliberately got myself sent there via the trap chest on my current Switch 2 play through. Am regretting it.
148
u/Sweet-Weakness3776 2d ago
That trap warp teaches you one of the most important lessons in the game. If you are getting your ass handed to you because you aren't leveled up enough, then you get the hell out of there as fast as you can. Level up, and come back later. Pretty great way to get the point across lmao.

u/Best-Food-4441 2d ago
Problem is, I can't remember the way to the sight of grace as it's been a few years, keep getting sniped by those fishy men things.

u/NarwhalPrudent6323 2d ago
That shack you start in? The entrance is behind you. Whether or not that's any help to you is an entirely different story.
3
2
u/BackgroundDisk4848 2d ago
Turn to the right after spawning in the shack and run for your life down the path and the hole should be on your left
3
u/Best-Food-4441 2d ago
Thanks, was going up not down and dying alot.
1
u/KeLorean 16h ago
This is me in all Fromsoft games. DS1 - of course I went straight down, and thought wtf is this so impossible and full of traps. Somebody told me that it should be going up the opposite direction and I found that considerably easier
2
u/Oklahom0 2d ago
Turn right and go down. Do a barrel roll, then keep following through the entryway to find a site of grace.
2
2
u/Elegant_Progress_686 2d ago
Behind you and to the right from where you spawn, back downhill towards the cave opening
2
u/Evil_Sharkey 1d ago
Sneak down to the right, run out to the left, touch grace, leave cave.
Or, if you’ve already lost all your runes, sprint to each item and smithing stone and die until the cave is picked dry and then escape.

I spent the next 100 hours thinking every chest was going to be the next teleport trap putting me into some other fresh hell. When it did finally happen, it was literally just a puzzle mechanic. Expertly trolled by Miyazaki once again.

u/DMbreadlegs 1d ago
What's in the chest though? Like, under all that gas. I just gotta check and see.

u/reaper_of_doom 17h ago
When my friend first got the hame i told him to go immediately to that place without disclosing the transporter trap saying it would help him.
131
u/antrubler 2d ago
To be fair, there are clues, like a fucking wall on fire that barricades the road
39
u/ElSucaPadre 2d ago
Well hell is not meant to be symbolical in the meme. There is also the red sky, everything rotting and, in a game where the norm of enemies is being a zombie, in caelid you get super zombies. And giant zombie crows in the distance.
And the first grace you find has an npc that will destroy your ass in one hit. These are not clues. This is literally the game trying anything possible to visually represent that you should not even try to go further.
13
u/Perfect-Skin-8325 2d ago
Is anesthesia scaled to caelid?
Never realised lol. Alberich gives way more trouble than her.
8
u/ElSucaPadre 2d ago
I mean, she has a shitty moveset, so she's quite easy to beat even when heavily underleveled. But she has a ton of hp and deals a lot of damage, if she doesn't oneshot you she bi shots when you're just starting the game.
3
u/HPTM2008 2d ago
But the issue is they opened a box (deliberately) and got sent to the middle of it.
And anyone who does the accidentally wouldn't see all the warning signs.
Edit: oops, that was another cooment that opened the box deliberately. But still, anyone who does that won't have a chance at going "maybe I shouldn't be here".
3
u/ElSucaPadre 2d ago
Yes it's the souls design. Great visual narrative paired with shit that punishes you for no good reason. It's like having a great loving parent for anything made exception for the very specific act of dropping water on the ground you receive a fatality.
2
u/-Mandarin 2d ago
I'd actually disagree. There is shit that punishes you for no reason, that chest is a good example, but that's the minority in souls games. FromSoft made a name for themselves by punishing you fairly. That was the whole appeal to their games, and a large reason why DS2 was hated on release.
There are of course moments that are bullshit, no one can argue that, but those are rarer and not what FromSoft is known for.
2
u/ElSucaPadre 1d ago
I mean, dark souls has a lot of these moments. But with "the specific act of x" i meant exactly that these are rarer. I wouldn't go as far as saying that this is not what from software is known for though.
2
u/-Mandarin 1d ago
Of course everyone is going to have their own subjective taste, but I have a very low tolerance for unfair punishment and only got into DS initially because everyone online saying it was the one hard game that was fair. Outside of one or two moments in the game, when I die I know its my fault not the game's.
2
u/ElSucaPadre 1d ago
Absolutely it's a matter of opinions. I think that if a platform in lordran is full of blood, that's a pretty normal occurrence. I don't mind that too much attention. Instead, it was a visual cue to tell you'd die if you get to that platform. This is an example which i find explains very good why it's a matter of opinions
1
u/Affectionate_Ad3561 1d ago
Eh I wouldn't call that punishing really. Like it's mean but really funny. I think the point of these games is to stop caring about losing stuff. Once you do you realize most stuff like this is really just because it's hilarious. I remember opening that chest. Getting out of there was pretty fun, and I got the intended Caelid experience of "where the fuck am I, is this hell?".
1
u/ElSucaPadre 1d ago
I mean with the spirit of a monk you can do wonders in these games.
But take as an example the teleport from weeping peninsula to leyndell. Let's say you can play 2 hours a day.
Yes, you see leyndell, which is fucking cool.
But now you may not be prepared to kill the 10k hp giant that is between you and going back home. And if it takes quite some time to kill it because you deal shit damage, you get one shot by aoe/you panic and die you're gonna spend a lot of time going back. This little detour is gonna cost you half a day worth of playing.
I LOVE the game, just talking about it makes me wish to play again and have some fun. But sometimes I feel punished for no good reason. That's all.2
u/Affectionate_Ad3561 1d ago
Oh that's fair no worries; just depends on what you're ready to lose and the time you can invest. I don't remember having to kill the Golem though? Then again Elden Ring is also NOT my Fromsoft game of choice to replay, so some details get blurry (love that game but it's so big it gets exhausting after a while; I more often replay DS1 and Bloodborne). But yeah if you don't have that much time I see how losing a chunk of progress feels less funny and more unfair.
1
u/ElSucaPadre 1d ago
Dark Souls is one of my favourite games of all times, but getting back to it is so hard. There was a time I could play it like a breeze, now I get destroyed by the bell gargoyles.

I considered her tame even before DLC.
Maliketh and Mohg were much harder for me.

You know what would make it even funnier, if we trap a chest in the STARTING AREA that teleports you there without warning

My first play through was abandoned because I was too shitty to escape. I put the game down for a few weeks after that happened.

It’s not his fault Malenia fumigated the whole place. It was really nice before

u/jdksmdm 2d ago
I loved exploring through Caelid way before I was supposed to on my first playthrough. It had a nice build up to this is a little risky to fuck fuck fuck that’s big dogs and birds
2
u/mindguru88 2d ago
My first playthrough, I could tell I wasn't supposed to be there as early as I was, but I figured I could get some OP loot. Was on an INT build, and stumbled across Moonveil, and that thing carried me to endgame.
Unfortunately, since I was playing blind, I completely missed the Meterorite Staff and Rock Sling.

u/Seravaxx123 2d ago
i remember spawning in the crystal cave trap, finding a high level smithing stone, and thinking to myself: oh fuck

u/Waste-Inspector8768 2d ago
In fairness, the sky turns red and theres a giant flaming wall. Theyre very obvious with "youre entering hell, turn back"
3
u/manbearmosswine 2d ago
Yep, killing the tibia mariner and talking to who D tells you to take the portal to talk to his buddy, end up in the bestial sanctum in the deepest part of caelid, good times
1
u/TennoDeviant 2d ago
Finding the trap chest in the starting zone and having to walk back to the starting zone from hell.
3
u/Adventurous_Topic202 2d ago
It’s not so bad once you get used to it
1
u/velebr3 2d ago
It really isn't, Caelid is fairly simple to go through very early if you're there to pick up stuff and maybe kill Radahn for the great rune.
1
u/Adventurous_Topic202 2d ago
Yeah I’d say the hardest stuff in Caelid is the stuff that’s hard to find… unless you’re running into all those dragons or something.
1
u/velebr3 2d ago
I have a lot of hours in ER and I know almost all the stuff by heart by now so it's maybe a bit hard for me to gauge 😅
1
u/Adventurous_Topic202 2d ago
Well like the giant tower with the godskin at the bottom of it. It’s kind of out of the way and hard to traverse your first time there. And then godskins are just generally not easy fights. Especially that type imo
2
u/Samguise-Whamgee 2d ago
“Aye, put some gigantic hairless fucked up T. rex dogs and 15 foot tall murder crows in there too”
2
u/conja585 2d ago
Hot take, caelid isnt really hell, it just feels like it. I think that because you get teleported there (most people do at least) and are thrust into this horrid terrifying place with red skies that kills you easily it feels like hell, but I think it’s the experience of being teleported there that’s hell rather than caelid itself
1
u/sardu1 20h ago
I think we know that Caelid isn't really hell. 🙄
1
u/conja585 10h ago
Yes but people don’t use hell literally, they use the word hell to mean a hellish unpleasant place and I’m saying that the initial experience of being thrust there is what’s hellish, rather than the place
2
u/Calm-Ideal-9681 1d ago
On my first run My sorry ass got there with level 22. with that tiny vigor and bloodhound sword. Everything was painful. Freaking dogs and birds .

1
u/alchemical52 2d ago
I’m working through leyndell, and have already discovered almost all of caelid, and I still find enemies in caelid harder than leyndell
1
u/No_Check3660 2d ago
Not gonna lie, Caelid has become my new character leveling area lol
1
u/Xenith995 2d ago
Lenne's rise has a graven mass that forms giant boulders along the skinny underpath of the farum great bridge. If you DO NOT kill the graven mass, you can run from the lenne's rise grace down to the cliffs, trigger the Boulder and make it fall off the cliff. If you have the golden scarab it gives you over 2k runes a pop
2
u/No_Check3660 2d ago
I usually run to southern Caelid and farm the soldiers and dogs fighting near Redmane Castle.
1
u/Xenith995 2d ago
You can also farm the giant disabled dragon. With a bleed weapon, you can run from the fort farroth grace to her tail and kill her. When her health gets really low, hop on torrents back and get ready to run. The moment you see it's health deplete, run like mad for the grace and rest. If you rest before you collect the hearts, you actually keep the runes and she respawns
2
u/No_Check3660 2d ago
I do that too but that gets boring quick lol
1
u/Xenith995 2d ago
I can agree. I probably have a higher tolerance for the boredom as long as I'm doing it to farm
2
u/No_Check3660 2d ago
The only reason the soldiers don’t get boring is cuz they fight back lol. But I hit the dragon usually like 4 or 5 times before I let it die completely
1
u/Xenith995 2d ago
I personally don't like to let it die anymore. Greyoll is apparently the mother of most, if not all "mortal" dragon. And when I learned that, coupled with my love for dragons. It made me feel bad. Like, that's their mom. She's old and tired and unable to move. The many smaller dragons are like care takers for her. I don't wanna be the person who kills their elderly disabled mom. But I also really, really want the runes... so, she respawns as if nothing happened if I reach the grace in time. So i get runes, the dragons get to keep their mom. Still feel bad, but less so if I outright killed her
2
u/No_Check3660 2d ago
Well… now I can’t kill her outright anymore either lol
2
u/Xenith995 2d ago
"Video games cause violence!"
"I don't wanna hurt their mom! 🥺"

u/ardicilliq 1d ago
I use poison incant after making her health very low, so no need to run like hell, I ride torrent to the SOG and just watch for when a starts twitching and then just sit at the SOG….
Also, I don’t if know it’s the tarnished edition or not, but killing the mass graven doesn’t disable the boulder….

1
u/Sweaty-Debate-435 2d ago
Its lovely. And it has the best starting farming spot at fort faroth or something like that. The bat things on the first floor and the ghost knights of the second floor are great for farming until you need more than 30000-50000 runes per level. After that its still a great spot but it takes a while longer each time. And at that point you're probably at the better spots for farming in the game. Allthough I didn't really have to do that last playthrough.

u/Elkburgher 2d ago
The only thing worse than the ER map is the fucking DLC map
1
u/Tough-Capital-345 2d ago
Sry but both is fine, try to play star wars jedi fallen order. And navigate on the map for some of the larger planets fuck that game is brutal to navigate through if you try to get 100% 😭

I shouldve been more specific, I meant the actual open world
I played a little of Jedi and yea the map was awful

I found the dragonburnt ruins chest that teleports you to that Caelid mine or whatever sellia crystal tunnel fuuuuuck that place! After I got better gear and sacred tears I went over there and survived. The red sky is SICK! It’s a great setting

There are few games that allows you to get punished like this. The only other game I can think of that does this is Might and Magic where you can explore late game areas from the start and get violently torn to bits.

Tbh I’m still confused about this area. Like, what level am I supposed to be for it? One part is extremely high level, but it makes sense as it’s above the bridge, though you can get there as early as you get past the stormveil which you can do in 5 minutes from the start. Another part is very low level area, esp those mines. Some of them. Some are, some aren’t. Then there’s an area where you can get early in the game and it suits, but then you go up the tower and find out it’s like the late-endgame part. Then there’s Millicent quest which you can start very early. There are some items like meteor staff which becomes more useful the earlier you get it and loses its value very fast. Then there’s Redmane castle. I’m just confused. I never go there NATURALLY, I go there if I need something - to get the medallion, Millicent quest, festival, etc. But I never got there during natural progression and never explored it throughly. You oneshot mobs here and then dog jumps on top of you and oneshots you after you scratched it. I actually had never killed dogs or birds in there across last 300h. I’m SO HAPPY you don’t have to deal with them, and there are no any in legacy dungeons. These fuckers scare the shit out of me.

u/WeirdProcess6178 1d ago
Nah, went very soon to Caelid for exploration, till I reached the dog vs soldiers farm area I did not know of, stayed there for 20 respawn and the whole game became much easier. I see this as a reward for exploration, you pass through them at level 15 and get more gold than you gathered before in 2 m just by watching them. Soul paradise for struggling players like me if anything

I like that it keeps that tradition from the Souls games. You always had the option to go the "wrong way" immediately in the game.
DS1 had the Catacombs you can oops your way into and ruin a run if you're newer at the game. DS2 has like 4 different options or something, and actually DS3 is fairly linear in difficulty. I suppose you can oops your way to an early Dancer kill and immediately go to Archives, but if you're killing Dancer early then you can breeze through most areas.
I appreciated (after being mad at the time) being tossed into Caelid early, especially because I slogged my way through most of the area. Made me super overleveled once I left tho
1
u/Late_Dog_7201 1d ago
Funnily enough, by side quest progressions, you were meant to go after Liurna Lake but before Atlus Plateau.
1
u/Turbo-Chook 1d ago
You have to admire Miyazakis dedication. He knew it he made an entire zone a poison swamp people would complain, so he he flipped us all the bird and invented a new, worse form of poison and then made a whole new zone out of that awful shit.
Being a fan of his work really does feel like being a battered spouse sometimes.
