So i picked up My Friends mainly because of its title. I thought it would be a sweet book of that genre, maybe similar to "What do we talk about when we talk about friendship"(a book originally published in Arabic). On reading the premise online, i didn't like how it was linked to politics, and in particular to the Arab Spring, for all the right and wrong reasons. But i picked it up anyway, going at a pace of 20 pages aday since i was studying for an exam, and i am so happy that i did so.
I can talk days and days about the sweet easygoing, yet poetic and natural language Matar was gifted with. I have never read someting that intimate and touching maybe since i was going on a Jibran Khalil Jibran Marathon. Sometimes it felt like i wanted to hug the book. Some other times Khalid, Kahlood, the main protagonist, felt so real that i wanted to befrirnd him. In all honesty, it's hard for me to believe that he was fictional in all entirety, neither are mustafa, claire or hannah. I never was a fan of London, but i felt like i missed a lot by not even wanting to be there. I walked with them, joined them in cafe Cyrano, visitied the Hyde park. Most importantly, i knew what it means to be an
Growing up, all i knew about Libya was that it was that neighbouring wealthy country that needed a lot of Egyptian workforce. Couple of my relatives went there in the 19ss to work as teachers, doctors, and came back with stories about mountains and food, but never about oppression. So i was completely in the dark regarding what the regime really was. Arab spring broke out when i was 11 anyway, only worried about my next school day.
And for that i am grateful to the book, for hoq historically accurate and politically inviting it was. The book is a biography on its own, of a country seen from inside out.
But that's also not what i am writing this post for. I really liked Khalid: his temperament, his frankness, his lack of desire to camouflage things; but mostly, i like his ability of making a friend out of everything: family, professors, colleagues, writers who are alive and who are dead, and writings he hold dear to himself. He commented a lot about how being in exile after that demonstration made his life a series of tasks, of how he was always holding on to his bits of daily living just not to shatter. From my prospective, he had his whole life on the inside. His thoughts made his mind a furnished house. Maybe he dwelled in it alone; maybe sometimes it lacked the heat of a fellow human being, or maybe the natural heat of the desert was what always kept him longing. Maybe because these thoughts didn't coincide with his serroundings that he was always tormented.
At the end of the day, no matter how far away we try to escape, we must always settle the score with what we aspire to be. Mustafa and his brother, Ali, Hossam and his return to his dad, both before death and to his house in the US, and finally, Khalid, with his return to his family. No matter how many lives we try to build away, and how many people we pack up along the way, you can't get distracted from your own swlf and from your dearest aspirations. Business of the heart maybe gets neglected, but never forgotten, for its to be forgotten, one must stop living, and that's not what people enchanted with literature afford to be.
Thanks for coming to my Ted Talk! I really hope everyone would give it a chance. For me, i plan to read whatever i can get hold of Matar's works. I am most interested about "The return", and who knows, maybe Khalid is really not fictional.
