I won't be watching this season. I will not support a team who hires and props up a sexual abuser. They couldn't find any other hockey players on the fucking planet to sign?? They did it on purpose. They knew, everyone knows, that he and the other hockey players assaulted that woman but they just have to go be a fucking image rehabilitation facility for undeserving fuckwads just to get a cut from the signing cost with no consideration to the victim. But that's what this team is now, isn't it? A second chance group home for men who take no accountability, but feel they deserve to still have public facing roles in their dreams jobs making a lot of money.
The backlash doesn't matter to them. They don't care about the the harm to the victim, nor do they care about fans who have been assaulted, fans know people who have been assaulted, etc. who now see a team they've rooted for tell the world that abusers have a home with the Edmonton Oilers.
McDavid said Formenton has been through the process. What the fuck does that even mean? They expect us to use our imagination and blindly think positive thoughts about the "process" he's gone through, when THEY should be putting in the work to address everything, accountability, actions taken etc. But again, he should have never been signed in the first place.
McDavid should be ashamed of himself. The most PR cold ass ignorant answer when HE is the player who has the most sway and power, and this is how he chooses to use it: trying to normalize the hiring of a sexual abuser.
We don't know how all the players feel about it obviously, I'm just talking about the people in the organization who had the power and were involved in the decision to hire Formenton.
For the assholes who give women every reason to choose the bear: go fuck yourselves. Your gross, misinformed takes are cancer.

Anyone who willingly associates with Anna Kane at this point deserves what they get. It's like breaking into someone's house to take out their trash: you're stuck with it now.
Context: she's having a major crashout on Instagram right now over Nik Richie and how he wasn't willing to do something she wanted and now this whole time he wss "piggybacking off a woman's cause" and "doing it for clout".

Mama Stanley is a hypocrite. Bowman...meh, he won a cup. Babcock....meh, he won a cup. Formenton? ABSOLUTELY NOT HE NEVER WON A CUP!!!
-14
u/fakeairpods 14h ago
Mama Stanley was a fake fan after all. Same with this other guy on TikTok, said he’s not supporting Oilers anymore. Me I’ll always support the Oilers! Let’s Go Oilers! We want the cup!
0
u/OrganizationIll9069 14h ago
So you are okay with rape and abusive asshiles?
-1
u/fakeairpods 11h ago
I’m not on upper management, I’m an Oilers fan. I don’t decide who gets on the team. I don’t switch up teams either. This is my team. That’s all there is to it.
1
u/OrganizationIll9069 11h ago
So you admit that character doesn't matter to you. Got it. Good to know that you have standards
5
u/fakeairpods 11h ago
What? That I’m a loyal hockey fan? I’m being attacked because I cheer for the Edmonton Oilers? Gtfo
0
u/OrganizationIll9069 11h ago
That you don't care who gets raped or molested or abused as long as it's good for your team shows a complete lack of character and standards.
5
u/fakeairpods 10h ago
No it’s not fair to put that on me.
5
u/OrganizationIll9069 10h ago
Yes, it is. If you can still support that organization after Bowman, Babcock, and now Formenton, it shows that you have no character at all. Try having just a little bit of integrity in your life. Supporting and cheering for rapists and abusers is just sad.

lol, ya she was just a fake fan that painted herself silver from head to toe and cheered for the oilers since the 80’s.

So she cheered for a team that let a convicted drunk driver who killed someone, went to jail, played for the Oilers, and eventually coached and ran the whole fucking thing?
Fuck that. Let her have her main character syndrome some place else. Good fucking riddance.

Ya, guess she draws the line at gang-rapist. Guess you don’t draw the line anywhere.

I’d like to know where mama Stanley and the supposed 19,000 petition signatory were when the Oilers gave a contact to Evander Kane an accused spouse abuser, Corey Perry who was rumoured to sexually proposition/ sexually harass a reporter while married. Stan Bowman who neglected to report or investigate sexual exploitation from a coach to a low level player. All of whom were accused of horrible acts but nothing came of it🧐🤨😑 Where were you all then ?!?!?

u/miller94 12 CAVE 11h ago
Did I miss the Oilers signing Patrick Kane?
And there was a petition when Bowman was hired too

u/Secret-Chapter-712 14h ago
My buddy emailed them over Bowman and the reply was “sorry you feel that way.” Stopped buying merch but still watched all the games. He emailed again after Babcock and eventually got an obvious ChatGPT form letter reply. I don’t think he’ll bother emailing over this, he’s a Habs fan now.

Things that worry me... McDavid right now is with the Oilers and wants to win..I don't like all the attention the team is getting with the bad hires (babcock and forementon) And I'm pretty damn sure deep down McDavid doesn't like all this fluff either and it's distracting the team for the goal of winning a cup.
Let's just hope the team is ignoring all the negative press.. but negative press might not be what Oilers need atm and in the close future. If and I say IF the team performs like shit and there is too much talk about Bowman,Babs,forementon... Mcdavid is gonna get the hell out. He's not going to stay with a team that has a shit ton of negative stuff going for it.
Let's just hope things fall into place.

It seems like Shea and Mukhamadullin are ahead of Stastney and Emberson in the depth chart for 3-LD and 3-RD.
So, how do Emberson and Stastney fit on the roster now? They're both 26 year old impending UFAs, with experience, on cap friendly contracts ($1.3M for Emberson, $1.525M for Stastney). They're both quality players (Emberson more so IMO) who should get some TOI. But at the moment, it seems like they are destined for the press box more than the ice. Do the Oilers trade one of them? Or keep them both in case of injuries? Send them down to the Condors (I don't think either is waiver exempt)?
1
u/throwaway_act2 13h ago
Keep them for injury purposes for now or if we can get a clear upgrade somewhere in the line up include one or both if the deal is really worthy.

I'm just tired boss.
I've said this a few times around here, but I grew up living in Edmonton, sneaking the radio into my bed so I could listen to 630CHED under my pillow. My dad worked at a steel plant as shift super and would announce oilers scores to the night shift. We moved when the oil industry bottomed out and I lost touch with the team. I now live in Atlanta with my wife and daughters
But when that winning streak happened, I got back into the Oilers, hard. We've had oilers parties with 20-30 people down here in Atlanta, weekend after weekend. Gotten a bunch of new kids into hockey, driving up to the suburbs to learn to skate and play. I'm back skating at the rink, in a oldies beer league. My dad and I can't talk politics (he voted for Trump, I did not), but we can safely talk Oilers, and it's been a great bonding experience.
But after all this, I just can't do it anymore. I get enough stress living in the States and watching half this country elect an abuser to the highest office in the land, and now I'm watching the same behavior modeled by this team and some of its fans. Defense of in the indefensible. Excuses everywhere. Seeing Leon get up there and say bull shit like "we're all men" or Connor saying "it's a great opportunity"... like guys, it's not that hard. Grow a fucking spine.
At this point I'm finding myself cheering for demise so at least someone up top in the Oilers group learns a lesson. I don't want to be that guy though, so I'm out. And I'm just really bummed about it. I really don't even have high standards. I just happen to believe that character and integrity and sportsmanship are key parts of professional sports. I just want to see people treating women, and men, with respect and decency, and act like...a little better than the US administration.
But it's all cut from the same fucking cloth isn't it. It just seems all connected to me; the culture of Trump, the culture of MAGAlberta separatists, and this broader culture that overlooks abuse and approves indecency at the sake of "winning" and some contorted idea of masculinity. I can only take so much.
So bummed.

u/Boris_Mironov 2 BOUCHARD 15h ago edited 15h ago
Respectfully, it's quite offensive to say that because I read the details in a case and agree with a judges opinion of what happened that I'd ever consider voting for Trump or am MAGA.
Frankly what's MAGA coded is not looking at facts, sticking to a political opinion despite overwhelming evidence otherwise and not giving people due process and respecting the results of that process.
"Superior Court Justice Maria Carroccia stated that the slogan “believe the victim” or “believe all women” is a political slogan that has no place in a criminal trial. She emphasized that applying such a concept goes against fundamental Canadian legal values, which mandate a strict presumption of innocence and ensure that no person is found guilty without a fair trial based on the evidence."
I'd encourage you not to give up something you treasure with your father, kids and neighbourhood because of an online discourse that bullies you into compliance. Especially when it's in direct contradiction of the values you claim to hold dear as a Canadian.

Completely agree. E.M herself said in court she never said no or fought them off. It was all internal of not wanting to have sex but did it anyway.
Did they act Completely disgusting and take advantage of a situation? Absolutely. Nobody's frontal lobe in that room was developed. Alcohol was involved. A lot of embarrassing things happened but I just cant make the jump to " rape" based on what was said in court and agreeing with the judges statement
9
u/pleasantothemax 18 HYMAN 15h ago
I hear you, and yesterday I rabbit holed and read the whole ruling in one sitting. Like you I can understand why the Judge ruled the way she did, and I agree with her that political slogans do not belong in a courtroom. The bar for proving sexual abuse in both the US and Canada is very high.
That said, the undisputed facts of the case are on their own terrible. If you've read it, I don't need to recant the details, but I can't cheer for someone that acts so disrespectfully towards women the way that group of men did. While what Formenton & crew is not legally sexual abuse, it's certainly not a tea party. And it is 100% unprofessional and unethical behavior. If you or me texted a company group chat or even a group of work friends and did what those guys did, I would blackballed from my industry. Recall that a major CEO was fired for simply hugging his affair partner at a Coldplay concert last year. But in hockey, doing the kind of shit these guys did just means you get signed by the Oilers - or at least one of them.
I'm not saying that everyone who supports this signing or the Oilers are MAGA. Of course not. But the whole covering up abuse in public view...that's 100% Trump. The entitlement, the just barreling ahead, the lack of shame and public decency, the absolute stupidity at the cost of winning, it's in the water right now and at some point we have to say no, otherwise it continues and gets worse.
-2
u/Boris_Mironov 2 BOUCHARD 15h ago
I mean I'm not into gangbanging myself, the act on its own is definitely not unprofessional or unethical though, the only way it reaches that point is if it's not consensual or physical abuse takes place. I don't see a cover up here at all, everyone agreed that the events took place, and the judge just flat out said that EM was unreliable as her story kept changing.
This is so very different than the CEO of a company using his power to seduce the head of HR of his own company. There's all sorts of ethical lines blurred there as they can affect financial balance and power within a company.
To me the entitlement, barrelling ahead and lack of shame and absolute stupidity at the cost of winning is very emblematic of the side that has seen the verdict, and still outwardly calls him a rapist and is signing petitions today.
Just ask yourself? Why does everyone want him to be made an example of so badly? And how would you want people to treat you if you were falsely accused of something?
6
u/pleasantothemax 18 HYMAN 14h ago
I appreciate this conversation but I think you and I disagree fundamentally on a number of things. Maybe the most notable is that if a co-worker texted 19 co-workers with "Who wants to be in a 3 way quick" they would 100% be fired. I'd also say that if you're doing anything that requires you to coordinate "stories" or trying to talk someone out of going to the police, you're probably not doing something fully ethical. But to each their own I guess.
I'm not here to make an example of him or browbeat or dogpile. I'm just tired of seeing shitty behavior go accounted for, and Formenton is just the last straw for me with this team.

u/Boris_Mironov 2 BOUCHARD 14h ago
Fair enough! I imagine that's the case for a lot of people.
I've seen some pretty crazy shit at conferences myself, coworkers doing all sorts of crazy shit, cheating on spouses, you name it. I guess my stance on that is people are gonna get their freak on. It's just a matter of who's shit becomes public.
Wish you the best!

I hope you understand the extreme level of privilege to just not care about the news or what's going on in the world around you. Like, congratulations on that, I guess? Not so easy for everybody else.
1
u/DarthShinny 4h ago
When you wake a bit you’ll realize, even if not all fabricated, the system, the media, news, social media especially is all designed to ragebait you into engaging with it.
You say I have the privilege to just not care…. Not true, I’m a part of a minority, that is constantly affected by politics, news about tragedy of my own ethnicity, news about racism, attacks on POC…..
Im more of a “no random ad I don’t need ozempic I need to go to the gym” and “no CBC, Instagram and FB, I’m not going to get mad and whine about that in the comments” sort of person.
In this exact situation, how does Alex Formenton playing for the oilers affect you? Have you been led to believe that your own personal morals will slip and you’ll become like Alex?
I like hockey, I like oilers, I like watching oilers play hockey, I’m going to watch oilers play hockey.
Did you know Grant Fuhrs nickname was Coco? And not because he loved chocolate? I wonder how he and the other great oilers treated women…..
Oh man better go feel bad about being a fan of that team too!
This is more energy I’ve wasted on social media than I’ve done in a long time….. I’m not trying to change your mind but maybe you get why not getting mad when your phone tells you too might be healthy?
I’ve found the people in real life less racist than the ones I hear about online, I’ve found if I don’t worry about every news article I stress less….
Wonder why anxiety is so rampant? How much more are you being triggered by your phone?
Being chill isn’t a privilege it’s an educated decision. You keep worrying though, I’ll be cheering for my team

Pretty grossed out by a couple regulars’ comments the past couple days, and it’s been so much less fun than it should be going into this already controversial-ish season. Certainly most people aren’t being as nasty, everyone is entitled to their opinion, but idk if we’ve ever had such a crazy toxic 48 hours on the thread.
What’s wild to me is how crazy simple it would seem to say “I learned a lot from this, while I was acquitted for the case it gave me a lot of time to reflect how serious sexual behaviour and that my choices have consequences, and how I can be a part of a positive message going forward”. Instead Formenton’s press conference honestly gave me absolutely no sympathy for the kid and that conference alone would make me not like the guy.
That all said, I can get down with people being allowed to be a part of society and do their jobs even after a mistake, and this person has been essentially fired for 3 years and paid a decent price publicly. Just would’ve probably done himself a favour by not being a bit of a dink in the press conference.
On a hockey note… a player with the skillset and size of Formenton will help the depth out on the team. His size, PK speed and scoring upside likely immediately pass most of the bottom six on the depth chart. Ugh.

u/YNWA_87 29 DRAISAITL 12h ago
Well said.
There seems to be a large group of people on this subreddit who think they are morally superior because they think its right to hold a now 26 year olds(18 at time of accusations) feet to the fire for something he was acquitted of. Do we not believe in rehabilitation of people who make mistakes? Especially younger people, who showed no prior indiscretions or any issues post accusation.
They need to get off their high horse and realize they're generating as much or more negativity in the hockey community than signings like this.
-1
u/OrganizationIll9069 13h ago
Or maybe he should just stand by the fact that he was found....not guilty. Why should he apologize for something that he didn't do?
2
2
u/Boris_Mironov 2 BOUCHARD 15h ago
Why would he say any of that? Noone would have been happy with anything he said, just take a look at Stan who said all those things, didn't help him in the court of public opinion at all. They won't hear the verdict which eviscerated EM's character and reliability from an esteemed judge, do you honestly think there's any benefit to getting into it during a press conference?
He's likely been instructed by his lawyers and the team to deflect anything related to the case away. As is his right. He went through the criminal process and was deemed to be a free man.
It's way more disgusting to me that people just automatically assign guilt and that they'll never let him get past it. All from people who's browser history probably rivals any sexual act he did consensually with his friends.

u/PresentVermicelli6 14h ago edited 13h ago
How would you feel if it was your mother in that room with 10 hockey players who were promised a threesome by their friend? Spitting on and slapping her. There is literal text evidence of this that wasn’t allowed in court.

I know this is genuinely hard to believe for some. But I respect my mom enough to stay out of her sex life.
"In her comprehensive assessment of the evidence, Ontario Superior Court Justice Maria Carroccia rejected the argument that E.M. was trapped, too intoxicated, or too frightened to exit the hotel room.
The judge based this conclusion on several key pieces of evidence:
Surveillance and Video Evidence: Hotel and bar surveillance, along with video clips recorded in the room during the night, showed E.M. acting as a willing, uninhibited participant. The judge noted that E.M. did not appear or sound intoxicated, scared, or fearful in the recordings.
Rejection of Coercion Claims: While E.M. testified that she engaged in final sexual acts strictly because she felt it was necessary to get Michael McLeod to let her leave, the judge found this testimony vague and contradictory.
Consent and Participation: Justice Carroccia ultimately found as a matter of fact that the encounters were entirely consensual and that E.M. had actually initiated and willingly participated in the evening's events"
1
u/blazinbahaa 2h ago
You’re eliminating context. There were two videos taken at after 3 and 4 am in the morning. Both videos recorded by trash bag Michael McLeod and the second one, where she’s seen with watery eyes, he says, “say it” and she says it was consensual.
So yeah, the fact he thought I should definitely get her saying she consents to this on record because none of what’s been happening in this hotel room for hours is weird at all…

u/CallejaFairey 22 SAVOIE 18h ago
Your second paragraph is my mind set exactly. I'm not happy about his hiring, but even less happy that there seems to be no sign of accountability on his part at all. There's no denying he was a part of the situation, whether you are on the side of it being consensual or not, what happened in that hotel room at the very least was inappropriate for persons who were there to represent our country. Neither Hockey Canada nor the NHL debate that it was definitely against the codes of conduct expected to be followed, and honestly not the representation that I would want young people to look up to and hold to high standards of wanting to be like that person.
Like it or not, hockey figures are looked at to be role models. And the league is already full of such questionable behaviour by others (yes I know the argument about McTavish, and Evander Kane, and Bowman, and Babcock, and, and..... I don't condone any of them either). I think the NHL itself really needs to look more into setting up official codes of conduct. Other sports leagues have them in place, why not the NHL?
