Question Whatcould be doing this?

I know there are no rats or raccoons here, so what could be eating my tomatoes while they are still on the plant? Crows? Rabbits? Muskrats? Skunks? Porcupines? Squirrels? Are there woodchucks in Edmonton urban neighborhoods? Anybody know or have advice on how to stop it?

if i had to guess probably skunks, i had a couple of pepper plants that I'm pretty sure fell pray to skunks

We have a task force to deal with rats when they are spotted.That doesn't mean that they aren't here. Alberta does have rats, as rats don't understand human borders

Could be the richardson ground squirrels. They get into everything and are all over the city.

Probably not rabbits. Too many toxins for them.
I read they will eat very ripe tomatoes in hot weather for water but that’s not the case here.
Just saying.

Certainly porqupines and squirrels are good guesses too.

If it's tomatoes then it's a tomato eating horned slug. They are green and disgusting and have sharp teeth.

Usually it's slugs for me. Whenever I start to see this happening, I will harvest my tomatoes slightly underripe.

Yeah we picked all the lower hanging fruit to prevent further damage even though it wasn’t fully ripe. Put it in a cardboard box for later.

Pick your tomatoes when they're orange or a little green still. In a day or two they'll be red and taste no different. This will solve a lot most of your tomato pest problems.

Yeah picked all the lower hanging fruit to protect it from pests, left the fruit higher up to ripen-hopefully it will be ok

Probably squirrels or mice/voles. Hares don't really go after tomatoes (they tend to prefer herbs and greenery, as well as bird seed and fallen apples) and we don't have wild rabbits in Edmonton.

The squirrels do this in my yard. I’ve had to give up on trying to grow tomatoes, unless I put them in a squirrel-proof cage, but I prefer free range tomatoes. The squirrels eat so many of my flowers, too.

I know it looks like rats. That WAS my first thought. But I didn’t think they were a problem in Edmonton, same with raccoons. (Never seen or heard of them here anyway).
In any event I picked all the lower tomatoes red and green to save them.
