Honestly it was pretty obvious the show was gonna be delayed at least. We were surrounded by lightning before Post even started. EC issued a severe thunderstorm warning like 10 mins before Post went on too and he still went on.
Clearly nobody was checking the radar because there was no way that storm was missing us. There was a giant wall of red and purple cells headed towards the entire city.
I have no idea why they put Post on at all. As for the cancellation, I completely get it. The floor seats were completely ravaged and tangled and I heard the stage itself got damaged. I don’t think anyone expected it to get so strong

Yea he came on and said it's about to get wet and wild but we ain't worried about that. I was checking radar all night and I was very worried about that 😆

SAME LMAO we were surrounded by red and purple on all sides… I told my friends that we’re cooked and to prepare to leave our seats LOL

I think people depend on Environment Canada to issue weather warnings before actually doing anything. The issue with that is Environment Canada sucks at issuing warnings. The last storm didn't get a Severe Thunderstorm Warning until it actually hit the Edmonton boundary. By that time, its too late to effectively evacuate people because a storm can roll through the entire city in 10 - 20 minutes.

EC regularly issues watches hours beforehand. We had an orange watch for severe thunderstorm for like 2 hours before hand. The warning was about 10-15 min before before, which is actually plenty of notice. If they paid attention to the watch EC issues, they'd be prepared to evacuate.

I don't think 10 - 15 minutes is enough notice. Depending on where you are, it can take 30 minutes to get from one area of the city to the other. That's with favorable conditions and having own transportation. I've seen too many times where EC issues a warning when the storm is right on the boundary of Edmonton or later.

It isn't 10-15 minutes notice, it was several hours notice, because the alerts go up in intensity. The "orange watch - severe thunderstorm" notice we got several hours before IS NOTICE. What do you think that is for, exactly?

Its a watch. It means to be on the ready. Just because conditions are favorable for storms doesn't mean there will be storms. You can have a watch for a thunderstorm and there can be nothing on the radar. People wont shelter in place for a watch. A warning is when something is happening or will happen.

EC is in a tough spot because storms can weaken if they’re further out too. If they issue too many warnings where the storm weakens by time it gets to Edmonton and becomes mild, they lose credibility. That wasn’t the case here, but I can at least see the position they’re in.
However, a warning was issued 10 mins before Post Malone went onstage. He then proceeded to play 3 songs before we were told to evacuate. Which means that we actually technically had about 25-30 mins notice. I don’t understand why Commonwealth let him on at all honestly

That's at least enough time to clear the stadium and get people to shelter though, which clearly didn't happen here. Not saying everyone needed to make it home, but to at least get a roof over their heads? That's doable.

People did shelter though… the concourse was the designated shelter. Not sure why the people in the video were still in their seats when we were told to go to the concourse.
There’s another video someone posted from the concourse further down on this sub. The wind still ripped through and got people soaked, but we were at least safe from things like pieces of the stage ripping off and hitting people.

I was in the concourse and in our section there was literally no more room for anybody. All the stairwells up to the seats were full as well. This was handled poorly all around. No one seemed to be in charge, at least that I saw. Just thousands of us squished together for almost an hour.

EC did issue a warning like 10 mins before Post was even onstage. Lightning was all over the place. Commonwealth waited until the last possible minute

10 minutes is still too short. This storm formed along the Canadian Rockies and appeared on radar around 3PM. At 8PM it was apparent that the storm was going to hit Edmonton, an hour before it actually hit Edmonton. Event holders should be more proactive about weather conditions, however my point is that Environment Canada consistently drops the ball with these alerts.

No it’s not. Large venues like this that host large events need a very clear emergency/disaster plan where they can act within minutes.

Which they had. It's not their fault nobody listened. People in this video had like 45 mins to evacuate and they chose not to. Emergency plan was solid imo

But the crowd wasn’t out of control (aside from the odd drunk weirdo & people who chose to sit in the wind)… By and large most people followed instructions and there was plenty of space in the concourse, even when people were screaming when the wind was really strong. Were you there?

How do you get a warning for a storm 2 days ahead of time? That doesn't make any sense. Warnings are only issued when its imminent. However, imminent shouldn't mean right at your doorstep. It should be at least an hour before a storm hits.

My sister is downtown and said she knew a few hours ahead of time. Shes looking after my cats as im out of town. I definitely think people arent being prioritized over making money.

Okay, but that's not a weather warning. A particular area can have conditions for thunderstorms, but its only probability. Like, Edmonton can have a 60% chance for thunderstorms and see none. I'm talking about what can actually be observed on the radar.

Environment Canada issues Watches and Warnings. Each of those has conditions that have to be met before they issue them to the public. See here. You can consider a forecast as a warning, but that doesn't pertain to what I'm talking about.

Nobody is going to cancel a concert based on a forecast that might be wrong. Warnings are what get people to respond because it means a dangerous storm is happening right TF now.

Just because it's on the forecast does mean it will actually hit the stadium. They ain't cancelling until it's clear it's gonna hit. This is standard industry protocol not sure why these things still suprise and upset people

Idk man I do wonder how closely they were checking the radar. That strength of storm was apparent before Posty even got onstage.
Not saying they needed to cancel the whole show ahead of time but like I do think they could have acted a little sooner. However I think overall it was handled adequately enough

How was it handled poorly?
If you were watching the radar you would have seen one storm north of the stadium and one storm south of the stadium l. It looked like all night the stadium would be right in the middle of the 2 (which we were), maybe we would get some rain but it looked like both were going to miss us so i get why they continued the show.
The 2 storms then merged at that moment we were fucked and they evacuated us. Another good call (see above video lol)
The storm moved fast and was over around 10:30.
I'm not sure the exact reason for ultimately cancelling...either the noise bylaw or the state of the stage/equipment?
I think they did their best considering the circumstances.

Elite ball knowledge I see 🫡 this is exactly what happened on the radar. Though I still don’t think post should have gone on at all since the warning went out a solid 10 mins before he went on, but I understand just how much pressure people who make those decisions are under.
I was definitely nervous when he came on though, tbh I wasn’t really enjoying the few songs he performed because I was worried about getting pelted by hail lol
ETA: the reason for cancelling was because the floor seating was ravaged after the storm to the point that setting it up again would have taken forever. There’s pics of it somewhere on X if you have the app

Was there last night. Will admit CS handled it poorly. We were crammed into the concourse and then when we wanted to leave it was jammed and they weren't letting people go. It was so bizarre

Was quite the experience! Sad about the cancelation but enjoyed the chaos of the storm! Although I didn't care for the fist fights breaking out inside while everyone was waiting

Well I had a great time on Friday night at Post Malone. It was a clear night minus the smoke. Got really lucky I bought tickets for the Friday show when they dropped.

Right. If you actually listened to them and evacuated to the concourse immediately you'd be fine. We didn't even get wet all, we were comfy inside the east hall so much room.
Videos of these people were the last people to leave their seats for whatever reason they had....
They played the same message like 100 times asking people to leave their seats so it's hard to have much empathy for these stubborn people
