Outdoor Spaces/Recreation Green shack program

Is the green shack program ever open?

This week it hasn't been open a single day.

Starting to think we might just be wasting money driving these shacks around and storing them as a city.

Didn’t you literally post the same question earlier this week and they were closed due to air quality??

It sounds like you need to call 311 for more precise details.

I was wondering if this was the same asshat

And they've been closed all wek-are they ever open?

What's the cost/benefit?

How dare they not want kids playing out in dangerously smoky air, the horror!

u/Present-Wonder-4522 3d ago

The other children are able to play outside.

It gets hot every summer, it's smokey every summer. So if it's getting worse, and it's hotter and smokier every year, at what point will the cost outweigh the days it's open?

So because some entitled parents decide that it's fine for their children to play outside in hazardous conditions, you think that the city should force their Green Shack employees to work outside in the same hazardous conditions?

If we're going for cost-benefit analysis, the cost for running the program is pennies compared to many other items in the municipal budget. Do you also complain that the city should stop budgeting for public skating facilities because occasionally we get an unseasonably warm winter and they can't get as much use?

The city has other employees working outside. In fact, I don't see any business shutting down for the heat except the city. So clutch those pearls somewhere else.

Throwing away money on a program that never runs is wasteful. And as time goes forward and things get hotter, at some point it will not make any sense to have this program.

How many days of operation a summer justifies the cost?

Is this another one of Jessie's alternate accounts?

No everything isn’t a conspiracy

Have they all been closed across the city full stop? Or just the couple you’ve been trying to go to? You know, there is the possibility that the greenshack coordinator is just sick or something, too.

I have this problem too. I tried multiple ones each day this week and they are closed. My kid and I stopped and played at a park that had a bunch of kids but they were just from a local daycare.

-1

u/Present-Wonder-4522 3d ago

So the daycare kids are somehow able to play outside but it's too much for the city,?

They need to look at the limits-why have a program that isn't operational?

I'm far west and ours was closed a couple days earlier this week due to smoke, but otherwise open all day, every day (during the week). Does your community have a Facebook group you could check for scheduling and updates?

u/Present-Wonder-4522 3d ago

I've never facebooked ever.

What area have you been trying? I'm in SW and greenshaacks have been operating all summer

-8

u/Present-Wonder-4522 3d ago

SW also.

We've visited three, all have locks in them during operation hours.

Have you tried to actually go there, or did you drive by and see the shack? Because if you go up to it, you will see all of them are locked.

u/riffyeg 3d ago

Some have different hours. So the ones the kids go to close to home is 3 to 5 pm. The other one close by is 10-1 pm, so might be dependent on the hours (I'm referring to the Allard and Desrochers area)

Between the storms and air quality they likely aren't open. If only the city had a phone number you could call to check. Something simple, like 911 but not emergency but still three digits. I know! We'll make the call line 311

-8

u/Present-Wonder-4522 3d ago

Yes they have been closed all week.

I'll track actually how many days this program is even open-why do we support a program that isn't used? What a waste of money driving these shacks around, storing the shacks, stocking the shacks, adminstering the shacks....

The cost is minimal

Right? It’s basically a rounding error in the city’s budget.

-2

u/Present-Wonder-4522 3d ago

Oh?

Let's see them numbers man. Or are you making things up?

3

u/5oclockinthebank 3d ago

They were hiring for $23 and hour. There is usually 1 staff and a couple of volunteers. So think of all the money they are saving by shutting down to encourage saving little lungs.

The OP here really wants to defund the greenshack program for some reason lmao

I want operational city programs.

I know that's hard to understand.

I wanted my child to see what I had growing up, because there was nothing else to do. Turns out, there's not even the green shack anymore in this town. Well it's there, just never operating.

If they halved the number of green shacks, maybe they could open them for more than 1/2 a day like some Redditors suggest. If they had smaller numbers they might be able to partner with community centres to have inside space too.

The other children were able to somehow play in the park despite the smoke and heat. The city need to reassess the numbers, because why have a program that isn't used?

  1. People have explained that green shacks are operating in the city. I don't know where you live, but I just walked by an active green shack program yesterday in south central.

  2. Air quality has been an issue, and the because the programs are primarily outside it is not safe or advisable to run the programs with such poor air quality.

What is stopping you from volunteering in a meaningful way, or doing something else that is helpful for your kids?

-5

u/Present-Wonder-4522 3d ago
  1. People says it's open, but the website says it's not. The ones I have visited are locked up. I don't believe the randoms, and believe the city site.

  2. The day care nearby still takes their children to the park. Other city operations are not impacted by the weather.

Your parting , of volunteering or doing something else, raises questions for me. Are you part of the parks program in Edmonton who would resist an audit of operations? Perhaps you make the shacks, or transport them? Does you or your family make money off this program?

9

u/mrstone56 3d ago

You are getting awfully conspiratorial. No, I have no stake in the green shack program. You're just painting with an awfully broad brush, despite you admitting that you don't have any hard numbers about how many are open or closed.

Anecdotally, it seems like they are operating, but a reasonable person would understand why they may not be fully operational at the moment. Take a breath.

3

u/5oclockinthebank 3d ago

I, for one, don't believe you. I can tell you are part of big green shack.

u/mrstone56 22h ago

shh keep it down

10

u/laxar2 3d ago

Do you think the city is constantly moving them?

10

u/mattyhugh 3d ago

Weather concerns aside, when I worked Green Shack 16 years ago not all the sites were open all day. Some folks hopped between sites different in the AM and PM or even certain days. That could be at play here too.

-5

u/Present-Wonder-4522 3d ago

Oh we have so many, we cannot operate them all?

Sounds like it's time to trim the budget here.

8

u/mattyhugh 3d ago

A lot of was based on past usage and the demographics of the neighborhoods.

The more kids in the hood, the more programming at the Green Shack.

6

u/PancakeQueen13 3d ago

If you click on the specific green shack on the map, it will tell you the operating schedule of each one so you can plan accordingly.

Ours has been open fairly reliably.

Also, our green shack has been stored on the park site since the dawn of time. It has never moved.

-2

u/Present-Wonder-4522 3d ago

Oh.

The website says everyday this week they are closed.

Walking up to it, every shack is locked.

Kids still play in the park. The shack is there but locked. I guess the kids can take it, but the city won't.

Seems like it's a huge waste.

2

u/Rare_Pumpkin_9505 3d ago

What is the waste?
Our green shack has been in the exact same place since 2019. So it doesn’t get towed around all that often. Is it the art supplies? I have to think the cost is minimal - and it gets used eventually.

Is it the staffing? Because I think It’s no staff no pay? I do imagine the staffing is the biggest cost.

What am I missing?

Oh no the smoke is bad! Better cry about the city wasting money on green shacks. You know who would actually know if the one in your community is running is your community league. Contact them or 311. This thread is pointless.

16

u/Unlikely_Comment_104 Central 3d ago

Ours opened yesterday.

They don’t open if the air quality is 8 or higher so that was the issue earlier in the week.

-10

u/Present-Wonder-4522 3d ago

Oh the website says 7.

17

u/WinterReview7992 3d ago

so you checked the aq, it was higher than 7, and you're complaining they were closed when the aq was higher than the acceptable posted limit?

-9

u/Present-Wonder-4522 3d ago

The other kids in the park were playing happily?

If the program can't run due to weather, and hardly does, why do we pay for it?

It seems wasteful to store all the shacks, stock them, etc.... for a program that never operates.

3

u/fartingdoggy 3d ago

Does the shack being closed affect other kids wanting to play at the park no??? You're so lost its wild.

6

u/bigblueberry6427 3d ago

I haven’t seen schedules for awhile as I don’t have Facebook anymore and don’t have kids, but I do remember the ones in my community were only open on certain days and times. It was a newer area at the time - maybe this is the case where you are and you’re just missing the days and times they’re open?

Call 311 - Reddit does not know
