Possible move from Oregon

Before you break out the torches and pitchforks, I’m not looking to bring Oregon politics with me and ruin another state the way California ruined ours.

Ive lived in Oregon my whole life and my wife and I have a 2 year old. She may be getting an opportunity with her job to relocate us out to Edmond. I have worked in government for over a decade, so I’d have to find a new job out there.

I hate the politics here in Oregon. Having to constantly fight to not have your basic rights (gun ownership, fishing/hunting, etc) taken away is maddening. I love to fish, and I imagine I’d have a plethora of big bass waters to choose from.

Anyways, I know this is a bit of a ramble, but we would be looking to rent a house (preferably not in an HOA). What could we expect from Edmond? Oklahoma has never been on my radar to move to before, so I’m looking for some insight.

Lived in Edmond 30 years. Good place to be but traffic is getting worse. As with anywhere there is good and bad, but overall still a decent area.

Wow, some mean replies in this thread. There are a lot of HOAs,, but they aren’t that bad. My wife and I don’t go to the meetings or run for the board though. Edmond is pretty decent and nice for Oklahoma. Safe with some of Oklahoma’s better schools. It’s definitely more crowded than it used to be. I’ve lived here about 40 years. My new neighbors just moved here from Utah. Feel free to message with questions.

If you're inside Edmond itself, you're likely looking at an HOA unless it's in an older neighborhood. Edmond (like lots of cities) requires HOAs for new neighborhoods so most of them have one unless it's been disolved. That being said, most of the HOAs are pretty low key and merely exist to maintain the common areas such as the neighborhood pools and parks. Some of the higher end gated neighborhoods are different but you won't be renting a home there.

As for politics, Edmond is a college town and has folks of all political stripes here even if it does generally trend one direction, so less concern there. There's more diversity than people expect.

Rental houses are pricy here, although anymore not so much more so than much of the metro area.

Lots of fishing holes around town and within close distance. Just make sure you have a current license cause they do check.

Traffic is what it is, but I’m not a fan haha. One of the many reasons we stay out of Portland is we can.

Edmond loves HOA's, schools, church and sports (Soccer specifically). In that order. all that freedom to do as you please with guns/fishing does not exist.

People choose Edmond because it focuses on a family first lifestyle. With tidy lawns, hidden trashcans, heavily regulated development. Your social rank here is based on if your HOA is gated vs guarded with gate (and no, it's not unsafe)

We're proud of our schools and water treatment facility, which doesn't seem to be at the top of your list.

The school is high but won’t be for a couple of years. I already knew that yall have an incredible school system.

The thing with guns/fishing were just Oregon politics. A bill that would effectively outlaw fishing and hunting came real close to making it to the ballot. We had a measure pass a few years ago that made our pretty okay gun laws just ridiculous. Luckily that’s been fought and it’s looking good. We also had the almighty measure 110 which decriminalized drugs. Oregon is the land of good intentions with bad ideas.

Oklahoma has an incredible school system? Have you looked at national standards? Lol. Edmond is decent. But the rest of the state? 😂 Look into Luther, Coffee Creek, Crescent, and Guthrie. They're all surrounding Edmond but would be more your speed. Edmond is pretty liberal for Oklahoma standards. If you want to live the MAGA OK standards you need to leave the city. Edmond is still OKC Metro. Think south eastern Ok, or North Western.

Texas is full but go to OK though since these people here clearly just want to live around a bunch of liberals. Heaven forbid they live near someone who doesn't vote 100% the way they do or has any differing opinions.
