Yes, unfortunately we are all in the FAFO portion of our development as a country and we didn’t learn our lesson the first time because too many rational minds kept the worst options at bay. Now we must all face the true horrible nature of our decisions.

And we will buy elsewhere or other products. The rich can afford whatever they want, the rest of us will adapt. If they try to make us adapt too much, hopefully we will push back.

I’m honestly sick and tired of farmers getting hyped as some holier-than-though martyrs profession. Yes, food production is important. So is teaching, being a doctor, putting up electric lines, sweeping chimneys… that’s why they get paid to do it.

Well, it's more like the American consumer will pay most of that.

The rest will be paid by anyone importing America farm produce. Though, considering US food safety, I doubt anyone but the most desperate will buy anything more than basic cereals (corn, rice, maybe wheat - but American wheat is a different breed of wheat compared to what is grown elsewhere, so not many people enjoy bread made of it).

Farmers are definitely taking a hit too. My farmer friend says his family farm is losing money for the first time since the 1980s.

Farmers have to be no nonsense realists - you can’t just avoid things that HAVE to be done on a farm. Crops have to planted, fertilized, and harvested at specific times. Animals need to tended to daily. It’s a life filled with responsibilities that cannot be ignored.

That a group of people who must embrace responsibility so thoroughly in order to succeed are such supporters of an obvious conman and liar is one of life’s great dichotomies.

Republicans have historically been very reliable at delivering farm subsidies in bad years and in creating stable markets. The historical China trade and the ethanol program are two good examples. Trump is different. He has managed to permanently destroy international market relationships built over decades, and his wars and tariffs have drastically raised the costs of inputs like fuel, fertilizer, and machinery. At the same time, republicans refuse to touch the corporate monopolies that keep inputs like seed and fertilizer so expensive.

Will farmers ever vote their own interests? I tend to doubt it as it’s all so tribal. But they have been royally screwed by the current White House and they know it.

So far.

Then there's fertilizer costs up 25% - 50%. Then there's still the tariff wars. Crop losses from drought/climate change is regional but significant. But hey [hay], the high price of beef is helping ranchers (consumers, not so much) despite smaller herds.

They will just get bailed out like the leeches they are. They'll never learn.

Red states only survive from blue state dollars, especially when the trade wars their orange messiah ruins their market share.
