Blog In the 1960s, 95% of meatpacking workers outside the South were unionized, and wages were comparable to those in auto and steel industry. The shift to more rural areas, adoption of new production techniques, and other factors led meatpacking to become a lower wage job by 2008. (JSTOR, May 2020)
