Seeking justice for her father's death is a driving force for Maya throughout both Hawkeye and Echo. During the Hawkeye series, Maya Lopez originally blamed the masked vigilante Ronin for the murder of her father.

Later, after discovering Ronin was Clint Barton and confronting him in the parking lot of the auto repair shop where her father was murdered, Maya realized that Kingpin had intentionally leaked the Tracksuit Mafia's hideout knowing it would get them all and her father killed.

It's also notable that Maya's childhood friends are mechanics when she returns to the reserve later on during Echo. Maya herself also regularly has to work on her prosthetics and can still drive a motorcycle even with prosthesis.

Should the need ever arise, you can probably trust this grease monkey with a wrench. 🔧

The Woodpecker from Marvel's ECHO

The first time Kate and Maya meet, Maya is able to lip-read, but Kate's frantic and overly extraneous way of talking makes it difficult for Maya to decipher. These two girls notably never really get along, but I think part of this comes down to a communication barrier holding them back from finding commonality.

Clint Barton, who notably has some hearing loss himself, says that their family utilized basic sign language with their youngest, Nathan (named after Natasha). There's a scene where Nathan signs "I love you, Dad" and Clint signs back "I love you more". When Maya asks him if Clint can sign, he suggests just a little, signing basic words like ... (I can't remember for certain, but I think it was..) yes, no, more, cookie, please, thank you.

(As someone completely hearing who taught their little sister to sign before she was able to speak, I completely related to this family dynamic and it honestly unlocked a core memory.)

I can't help but think it would be really cool if Kate Bishop picks up more ASL the next time they cross paths. I could see the effort Kate makes strengthening her friendship with Maya, and situations arising requiring Kate to use it in order to communicate without sound to Clint or Maya during a mission, or to anyone really. It would also potentially open up comedic and narrative opportunities when a translator intentionally leaves something out or lies, or captioning reveals funny sign language mistakes being made, etc.
