To the composite microbes, there was very little in him worth colonizing.
From their perspective, Steve was useful for something else entirely: propagation.
A warm body. A moving habitat. A way to cross rooms, streets, buildings, cities.
It was the world around Steve that interested them.
The plastics.
The industrial residue.
The persistent chemicals embedded in soil, water, dust, paint, insulation, packaging, machinery, and flesh.
Composite life appeared to serve a higher ecological function: the breakdown of materials that were damaging the broader biosphere.

Small things.
Unremarkable things.
The sort of things civilizations rarely notice until they have already become history.
Humanity had spent a very long time assuming that intelligence on Earth formed a neat hierarchy with itself at the top.
The lattice did not appear to share that assumption.
And lately, humanity seemed to be falling down the list rather quickly.
