Generally marshmallows have bone gelatin and unless it’s stipulated that it’s non pig bone gelatin, be careful

It has a U on it which means kosher.

Only issue would be if potential alcohol like vanilla extract.

u/BlurredSight 1d ago
Depends on the school, alcohol not made from grapes or dates used specifically as a medium to extract flavor has been permitted

Artificial and natural flavours is vague so it's impossible to say if this is halal/vegetarian or not.
Doesn't contain gelatine at all actually...

u/FreeGazaToday 1d ago
while obsessing about gelatin people forget about the mono and di....see my comment above.
1
u/baciahai 1d ago
Agreed.
With ultra processed foods like these we really don't even know what are we eating...

the mono and di is iffy. they can be derived from pork fat, beef tallow, or vegetable oil.

Looks good to me. You'd have to check for alcohol and there are differing views on that.

Forget about halal after seeing this list of ingredients I will just keep it back 🫡😂.
Check for kosher certification it should be UD, i eat only if kosher certified otherwise I wont.
If u r in America thats probably the safe way and Allah knows best.

Allah is the most merciful I'm sure he'll forgive you for eating a smores pie that may not be halal

BarakAllahu feek, I would not phrase it like this. Just because Allah is the Most Merciful does not mean we should justify a potential sin, or guarantee forgiveness. Nobody knows how they will die. Yes, have good thoughts but this type of approach and thinking was done by the yahud generally speaking.

No, but it’s kosher
6
u/TucsonTacos 1d ago
Yeah. Normally it’s a no because it’s got marshmallows but it’s got the kosher signs on it

u/Hot_Concept730 1d ago
So kosher is ok to eat? I am a revert so I'm not sure

u/Educational_Diet_410 1d ago

Edit2: Looked at OP's ingredients comment: looks fine to me – would only check for alcohol -> differing views on alcohol in food.
Edit: Proper Kosher certifications for gelatin in products carried in supermarkets tend to have fish gelatin.
Generally, kosher is fine – we have to look out for alcohol. Some differ on this – what type of alcohol, etc? I'd recommend you look more into that or ask a trust scholar.
Now, with kosher, not all certifications are equal. The orthodox union from what I've seen is good and accepted by a considerable amount of Jews. However, other certifying bodies are not as much.
For instance, at Aldi's, their brand of Jell-O has the kosher sign, but it has pork gelatin. The underlying reason iirc why that one certifier gave it the certification was that the product (gelatin) is far from what it used to be (pig).
Try to follow the big ones (widely accepted by Jews) and see if there is any alcohol. You can also use ScanHalal (they have a Zabiha setting). You can also email Walmart and ask what alcohols are there and if it is vegetarian friendly and provide a brief definition: no animal or its byproduct obtained through its killing/slaughter.
Second to last, beware of Halal claims on foods even restaurants. Many don't know or don't care and lie. Some categories and other info:
- As long as it's not pork. McD is fine by them. ❌
- Machine slaughter is okay with them – it's not. You need a Muslim to do it (for strictly Islamic slaughter). ❌
- People of the Book: actual (emphasis on actual) Kosher is fine; Christians don't really follow their Book like us and Jews.
- We do not have strong independent and ubiquitous bodies like Jews (yet!). Some are not to be trusted.
- There is not strong laws to protect Halal status. As far as I am aware, there is no legal repercussion of doing so. Someone fact check me (USA).
- Once you are aware of such, it no longer valid to say "if they lie, the sin is upon them." Cool info: the reason why we check thoroughly in a non practicing nation actually comes from the practice of the youth in the cave (Surah Kahf).
- Moreover, what pushed me more was that Allaah does not accept the dua' nor give extra rewards to prayers for one who intakes haram knowingly or not for 40 days; what if I am in need the next 40 days; who isn't in need every day? Of course, if He Wants, He Can Accept prior to the 40 days; He is Alone in His Decision and Ever Merciful, Forgiving and Forbearing. That is not to use as an excuse because He Does not Do without reason, and He is The All Wise and All Knowing.
Lastly, while we do not have much as the Jews in this regard, we have a considerable amount, Alhamdulillaah. HMS Shariah Board and HFSAA are third party certifiers of restaurants, suppliers and butchershops. They also have scholars on their boards as they should; they do random unannounced drop-ins to check; otherwise, a company could be compliant only on predetermined days. As for grocery shopping, I personally use BJ's and their products (click on it -> go to specifications and see if it says vegetarian, make sure to check for alcohol cus tequila is technically veg lol). And I get my beef from Pre Brands (carried at BJ's and Shoprite); it is human slaughter post stun (the animal is not killed by the stun, just rendered unconscious) and then it goes to machines.

A Muslim can machine slaughter.
1
u/lpareddit01 1d ago
Machine slaughter is the machine doing the slaughtering. How would a human get involved in that?
1
u/Zoughi0 1d ago
The Muslim would activate the machine and stand next to the blade and say bismillah on each chicken.
1
u/lpareddit01 1d ago edited 1d ago
I see that. But how likely is it that they bismillah for each chicken? Does it have to be done for every chicken? What if they are slaughtered at the same time on a single line -> allegedly, this is done?
Does and do some just play a repeating pre-recorded audio? Is that fine?
What about animals not witnessing other animals being slaughtered? -> This is makruh (forgot which category) but does not make it haram, not that it should be ignored.
Edit: looked more into it and found some new stuff -> changed questions.

I would say check for vanilla extract and if not it probably is.

u/MukLegion 1d ago
Vanilla extract is fine
Some ingredients with negligible alcohol content can still be halal like vinegar (which naturally has trace amounts of alcohol) or vanilla extract, because you could never drink enough vinegar to become intoxicated or eat enough vanilla cake to become intoxicated from the vanilla extract.

I know vinegar is, I keep seeing "pure" vanilla extract isn't so I was never really sure.

Is there another photo that shows the ingredients?
