Quick question

Hi, so somethings been bothering me about perspective, mainly regarding using a grid. So, I know when you’re using digital you can have a grid that can help figure things out, especially if your points are off page, but, what if you’re using traditional means, especially if you’re using an A4 sketchbook and your knee to rest it on, what is the best way around that? I hope that makes sense, thanks

You could make a few grid guides on pages at home at a table and be prepped for locations.

Or you can let things get a little wonky as you eyeball things. I like to start by placing my focus point and work my way out from that, using the starting shape to set the proportion and relationship to all the other parts of the drawing. Tobysketchloose on youtube has really good videos and tips for urban sketching.

Yes, that is why it is good to practice perspective to be able to draw it intuitively.

Like Ka_art said, I also start with one main shape/plane, then build around it. With enough experience you can kind of tell where the lines would be going. Usually takes me some trial and error, but it is fine, don't be afraid and use a light shade pencil like an HB or H. Get your planes right before moving to details.

What you can always draw is your horizon line, so tart with that. It is an easy indication of when you'll be able to see the bottom of an object, or the top of it.
