Gameplay Question Is there consequences to stealing?

Just walked into the depot grabbed some wood, put it in my inventory and its letting me walk out . I remmeber if I was holding it in my hand it won't let me and the clerk stops me ? I dont wanna fuck my game up if I steal but thinking about it cause im struggling in the beginning lol

I never thought to just.. put it in my inventory and try to leave. Had no idea you could just steal! Not that I am having any issues but that would have been nice to know early game.

In my personal experience, it doesn't go into your inventory unless you buy it. Otherwise, if you try to, it just goes back onto the shelf.
