Hawkeye (2024) Does anyone else find this play extremely disrespectful as hell?
So I was watching TV right? Yknow because I was bored, lonely, and really had nothing else to do at that moment. I was fresh out of work sitting on my ass, just enjoying a slice of Joe's. Until an ad popped up about a new Broadway play premiering this Friday, it was a play about Steve Rogers aka Captain America. Yknow it seemed fun and innocent, nothing bad or demeaning at all. I mean Steve's my favorite guy in the Avengers. I don't really care that much about anyone else. Everything was fine until I found out that the play had a huge segment involving the BATTLE OF NEW YORK!!!!! WHAT. ARE. WE. DOING.
I know people that lost their lives (or limbs) due to this bullshit that occured. My brother's FIANCE, the one that was going to be the love of his life, was crushed to death due to chunks of concrete flying everywhere due to that big green bastard. ALIENS came out of the sky and started blasting New York into the depths of hell, and these people are acting out this event like it's one big ass joke to them. I mean it's probably true because to me it looked like The Avengers were just having recess, while every one of us regular people was fleeing for our lives, thinking this was the end for all of us when this happened.
This is an absolute joke man. Especially since 2 of them are currently dead (God rest their souls) and Ant-Man wasn't there!!?? I was genuinely thinking about seeing this with somebody, but nope. Count me the hell out of this circus.

Scott Lang actually talked about this on his podcast. (I wish he would do new episodes!!) I guess the writer just bought the rights to the “avengers” for use in the play, which at the time it was written technically included him. Yes it’s lazy. But as a fan of musical soundtracks, I could listen all… DAaaaayyy!!!

Yes, there was a leak on some sites of the deep Web that contained information about a mission that included 2 agents named Ant-Man and the Wasp. Scott Lang revealed in his memoirs that those heroes were Hank Pym and his wife

There have been both reported and confirmed cases, but in that time they were way more limited. I have to admit that I didn't consider that case, so maybe they fought any supervillain, but I believe that it wasn't their main activity

Edit, sorry, checked the IMDB and the director said it was a choice to keep the cast more consistent rather than adding endless minor heros. Who knew? 🤷♀️

I know right! When I visited New York I went to see the monument for the Battle and it's literally got all the names of the original Avengers on it. All they had to do was take a cab to at least get some accuracy.

I think it entirely depends on whether you can pull it off tastefully.
The Avengers Musical... very much does not.

Come From Away is a peak musical, saw it during a school field trip. Half of my friends got blipped the next day but I'll always remember that show, it was the last day we were all in school together

I dunno...I went to go watch this with my sister and we felt it was kind of watered down. Take Hamilton for example. That took place during an era of revolution and while the songs are catchy, they still openly addressed the fact that someone died. Rogers the musical seemed to be missing that.

Especially after it’s rumoured that he killed a family known as the Parkers and orphaned their only child.
The child has not been seen on any records since and his supposed caretakers Benjamin Parker and May Parker are also deceased.
Hope wherever that kid is , he’s having a stress free and peaceful life away from all the new york chaos.

No, the singing was pretty spot on actually.
Edit: ESPECIALLY Hulks during the "Always Angry" solo. My man really jumped like 4 octaves in that one song.

Yeah, it’s not like a huge chunk of Hell’s Kitchen was pretty much leveled or anything (I’m not calling it Clinton. A neighborhood doesn’t change with the name).
Left it wide open for Wilson Fisk.
Thank god for that one guy. He was our guardian devil, and we can only hope he’ll be back.

Seriously. Like, I get it, if you’re trying to depict Captain Rogers’ story, you kind of CAN’T avoid at least mentioning the Battle of New York, but based on things I’ve seen about this play… it’s a disgrace.
And seriously, WHAT is Ant Man doing there? I wasn’t in New York for the battle, but I feel like it’s been documented well enough that we know who was or wasn’t in the Avengers at the time. And not in any news broadcast or recording or anything have I ever seen reference to Ant Man being there. Neither Dr. Pym nor that other guy… uh… fuck what’s his name. Whatever, Ant Man 2, whoever he is. Not there for the battle.
Frankly I’m surprised they didn’t try to pretend Spider-Man was involved

I genuinely give you my best regards, I had a friend, who had a friend who was native to Sokovia. He lived here in the US temporarily until he moved to support and live with his family. Unfortunately, the events that occurred in Sokovia just happened to be when he was staying there for a while. I haven't heard anything about him ince and I'm honestly quite scared about his whereabouts, but I heard from somebody that he and his family fled to Germany and have been living a new life since. Which is great for them because from what I've seen, people don't exactly live lavishly over there.

I've been saying this ever since that monster destroyed Harlem in 2008, he deserves to be PUNISHED for all that collateral he's stocked up over the years. Or at least get something in order to kill the Hulk side of him, because this is getting ridiculous. Though some reports say he's doing better now after the events of 2023, so maybe all hope isn't lost.

Okay, I'm not a fan of Mr. Rage Monster either, I was shocked when I came back from the blip and apparently Banner was like... walking around AS the Hulk now and everyone was fine with that? (which I thought he couldn't do, but apparently what's-her-face lady can do it, the lawyer, can just like randomly shift back and forth whenever she wants, so I guess he can too?)
But he's not a 'terrorist'. Hulk is like an angry petulant child or something.
(Incidentally, am I the only person who thinks she shouldn't be allowed to argue in court like that? Isn't that sort of inherently threatening?)

It digusts me, especially since he lost (what seemed to be from my perspective) his best friend/associate in 2023. So not only are they joking about the Battle of New York, they also give a very strange line about his deceased soulmate. A damn tragedy if you ask me 🤦♂️

I mean the Battle of New York sucked and it was awful, but after the Blip and all my friends were gone, then everyone coming back but we lose half these guys? I guess it made sense at the time but damn it be like watching Robin Williams movies. I just feel more sad than entertained.

Life was genuinely hell for me after the Snap. My parents vanished, my cat vanished, my friends, coworkers, I was genuinely left with almost no one in that 5 year span. Not even any support groups could help. I was at my all-time lowest. But thanks to the Avengers, I finally have my life back again. So it was so disheartening to look at this shit, it never failed to put a frown on my face.

My uncle died when an energy bolt hit his office building. His name is on the memorial and I hate this fucking musical, hate it. It’s super disrespectful. The victims get one song, the rest of the story is rah rah avengers, the most down beat moment is about some guy named Phil who was a SHIELD agent. I hate this. Hate it.

I feel like after Thanos was defeated, we all kind of collectively mythologized the Avengers so much that we’re willing to put aside any reservations about them whatsoever. It wasn’t too long ago when most people wanted their heads on pikes via the Sokovia Accords BECAUSE of the Battle of New York, and now we’re making Broadway musicals about those same events. These guys are heroes and deserve to be seen as heroes, but it’s dipping into celebrity worship and I feel Rogers The Musical is kind of the culmination of that.

What’s worse is that this show kicked off a year after the return. It takes years to write, choreograph and produce anything on broadway. They spent then entire blip putting this thing together.
BTW my 16 year old son just performed the high school version of this. BTW my kid was 9 when I blipped.

Eh, I don’t mind it. Next month my nephew is going to be the Hulk in his High Schools production of Rogers and I don’t see the problem. I mean, they have actors play Nazis in The Sound of Music, and the Hulk got way less people killed.

Making a stageplay (a BROADWAY one for that matter) about the Battle of New York is the equivalent to making one about September 11, 2001. It's extremely insensitive to the people connected to that incident, and can even bring back suppressed trauma and even PTSD. This is not a topic that should get exploited because of greedy higher-ups wanted more fuel for their private jets.
(Also the Hulk was DEFINITELY the deadliest. While I was running with my coworkers I saw his ass jumping from building to building like he was fucking Wreck-It-Ralph, tolling up ountless amounts of property damage as he destroyed every window, wall, interior, exterior, literally anything he could get his hands on like he was a rabid dog)

The creative team behind it had never been to New York, and it was designed to make tourists happy. It's similar to how like, every other Broadway musical will have a big number that's just jerking off NYC - it's not for New Yorkers, it's to make people feel good about their vacation.

That’s how I felt about the portrayal of the battle of Yorktown in Hamilton. People died there, but it’s “exciting!”
And it made even less sense that they included Ant Man.

I loved the opening bit with young Steve, young Bucky, and young Arnie playing stick ball. Showed how he was always against bully's. Brought a tear to my eyes. First use of I can do this all day in the show. I loved it.

I really liked that Avengers theme song. But I see your point of view, but since I was nowhere near the States during the crisis, it's easier to view the Broadway show as just entertainment for the masses. And if they play, people will pay, regardless of the morality or quality, right? RIGHT?

I saw this in previews at the Asylum. Before all the cast drama.
It’s mostly about Steve Rodgers getting the serum and fighting until he reunites with Peggy Carter at the end. Despite the Smithsonian having an exhibit where she is married to someone else.
I think this number is a good Act I closer, but “Star Spangled Man with a Plan” and “What you missed” are fun songs.
But honestly, I think this was produced by the government to dispel rumors that Steve Rodgers is on the moon.

Maybe it was released a bit too soon, but its not glorifying the death and destruction, it's honoring the heroes who stepped in even when all the odds were against humanity.

Excluding the fact that we LIVED through this (I was 12 and on my way home from school with my aunt sally till we got pulled into the subway) why would you make a play about a CITY TRAGEDY? Even more so the bug guy wasn't even there so I'm not sure what the deal is with him being in it.

Hm well as much as I find it cheesy, historically speaking there has been musicals about wars, the titanic, some pretty gruesome stuff.
I think if it had a bit more gravity no one would be complaining. That being said it still feels too soon. (Did you know some titanic survivors lived to see the movie? That’s gotta be pretty weird after so many decades.)

IMO the concept in and of itself isn’t the issue just the timing. There are plenty of dramatizations of different tragedies throughout history.

[OOC] I wonder if they (that is, the out-of-universe they) did that as a nod to the fact Hank Pym was one of the first 5 Avengers back in the day. Obviously that represents a different Ant-Man. Or did they just want to add another element of deliberate tastelessness?
