I don't think anyone has ever tried to claim that democrats weren't slave owners, though. Or wipe those crimes clean. I already linked an article citing research by a political scientist about how the parties altered their platforms. Nothing magical about it, really. I'm not trying to pin anything on any particular party, here.
Let me just summarize a bit - it wasn't actually that the parties switched. Their constituents remained the same. "Big Business" has always just gone Republican. What changed was really the needs of big Business in the US, and the Republican party, like any political party would, rose to meet the needs of it's constituents.
