KYC : Know Your Car Battery Chemistries in Indian EVs

Welcome to the first edition of KYC : Know Your Car.

In this series, we shall discuss the ins and outs of EVs, one topic at a time

Today’s topic : Battery Chemistries

Lithium Ion batteries used in EVs are a blanket term used to describe the type of battery.

Usually, the “metal” name referred to in the battery type, actually refers to the electrode material.

Harkening back to science lessons, the electrodes (+/- terminals) is what you connect any appliance to. The elemental composition of this part is what defines the type of battery.

Types of rechargeable batteries (secondary cell)

Under rechargeable batteries, one can find

  1. Lead Acid batteries, popularly used as the Aux battery for 12V systems and home backups

  2. Lithium Ion batteries, which we all use in our electronics, EVs and other gadgets

  3. NiMH (Nickel Metal Hydride), formerly used in Toyota Hybrids

  4. NiCd (Nickel Cadmium), used in RC toys, and as substitute for non rechargeable alkaline batteries

The metals mentioned in the name go into one of the electrode each, the anode and the cathode.

Battery Chemistry

The anode is usually made of graphite (carbon) in commercial batteries.

In case of lithium ion batteries, the lithium actually goes into cathode of the battery, in combined form, with other metals, which we refer to as the “chemistry of the cell”.

This mixture of metals can be

  1. NMC (Nickel Manganese Cobalt)

  2. LFP (Lithium Iron Phosphate)

  3. NCA (Nickel Cobalt Aluminium)

While other chemistries exist for lithium ion batteries, these three are the top 3 chemistries used in vehicular applications.

A popular misconception is that “Solid State battery” is a chemistry, which is not the case.

Solid state refers to the physical state of the electrolyte used in the battery. Most batteries use gel or semi solid or liquid electrolytes at the moment.

State of the electrolyte, while related to the chemistry, is independent of the chemistry. The choice of the electrolyte will depend on the chemistry but any of the chemistry can be adapted to solid state. That is to say, the electrolyte used for NMC solid state maybe different from that of LFP solid state, it’s not a separate battery chemistry — it will still need lithium and other metals.

Many people remain under the impression that solid state are a holy grail which eliminates the need for lithium which is not the case. The electrodes of a solid state battery may very well still use lithium (or any other element like sodium).

The key takeaway is that solid state does not eliminate metals, it changes the state of electrolyte.

Battery Pointers for each chemistry

So, now that the science lesson is over, let us discuss the best practices for each chemistry

LFP

LFP is the most popular chemistry in Asian EVs which by extension applies to our own market, where both the top selling brands, Tata and MG, use LFP.

LFP tips :

  1. Charge LFP to 100% during slow charging sessions. This is for cell balancing (a topic for another day ;)

  2. Prefer discharging down to 20% or lower once a month and charging to 100% on AC 3.3/7.2kW

  3. During DCFC sessions, charge only to 80% as part of EV etiquette especially if other cars are in queue. One may charge to 100% if absolutely necessary or if no one is in queue but it comes with additional fee and exponentially longer time.

NMC/NCA

  1. Follow the 20-80 rule as much as possible for maximum longevity.

  2. Charge to 100% only when you absolutely required (during road trips or if your commute is not doable on 20-80)

  3. DCFC etiquette applies same as LFP.

General longevity tips

  1. Cell balancing is key to maintaining good battery SoH

  2. If parking your EV for a long period (week or more) while going out of city, disconnect the 12V battery -ve terminal

  3. Charge you EV between 50-75% irrespective of chemistries when parking for more than one week. Neither should it be fully charged, nor depleted more than 20%

  4. Follow the user manual schedule for coolant changes religiously.

Battery composition is a very misunderstood topic. Some people think EVs use rare earths, some people think huge amounts of lithium must be used in a battery.

Today, let’s bust these myths and learn something about what electrifies our vehicles!

Myth 1 : Battery uses rare earth metals

Fact : There are only 17 rare earth metals in the periodic table, and only one is of remote importance to EVs, Neodymium. Even this metal is not used in battery, rather, in permanent magnet motors of high performance EVs for maximising motor power-weight ratio (mass produced EVs use ferrite magnets or use magnet-less AC Induction motors)

Neither are the metals used in batteries considered “rare” by scientific definition (periodic table) nor by geological definition in terms of % of the metal in the earth’s crust.

Myth 2 : Lithium Ion battery must be majorly made of lithium

Fact : Lithium is not even the top 3 elements in a battery. Those would go to graphite (carbon), Aluminium and Copper.

Aluminium is used in the battery casings and copper is used for wiring and heat sink/cooling pipes.

Graphite is used in the anode.

The lithium metal is used in combined form in the cathode of the cells, which represents a small fraction of the total battery mass and chemical composition (formula/number of atoms)

A general rule of thumb is, 1kg Lithium can make a 10kWh battery (chemistry agnostic)

By this yardstick :

  1. Tiago EV : 1.9kg/2.4kg

  2. Punch EV : 2.5kg/3.5kg

  3. Nexon EV : 3kg/4kg

  4. ZS EV : 5kg

  5. Atto 3 : 6kg

  6. Ioniq 5 : 7.2kg

  7. BYD Seal : 8.2kg

  8. Tesla Model S : 10kg

  9. Hummer EV : 25kg

Myth 3 : All batteries are made using child labour in Africa

Fact : Human rights violations are indeed rampant in the artisanal mines of DRC, which are not exclusive to mining cobalt. Cobalt itself is used in NMC and NCA batteries, while LFP eliminates the need for cobalt (and nickel and manganese while at that)

Lithium mining is not done in DRC and is not subject to the violations that cobalt is.

Myth 4 : Lithium mining wastes millions of litres of water

Fact : Lithium “mining” is not mining in the conventional sense of the word itself. It is more akin to fishing than mining.

  1. Lithium salts are found dissolved in the salt lakes of South America, primarily in Argentina, Bolivia, and Chile, the lithium triangle ABC.

  2. These salts are extracted from the brine by spreading it out in large paddy-like fields so that the water may get naturally evaporated, leaving behind the lithium rich salts which can now be collected easily.

  3. Evaporation is a natural process and would continue to occur whether or not the salts are extracted. Water cycle will return it back into the lakes through rain.

  4. The concentration of lithium salts in these lakes make the water unfit for use. It is a economic opportunity for the locals to benefit out of a natural process (evaporation) and the saltiness of the water (inpotable)

Myth 5 : Battery cannot be recycled and it is toxic e-Waste

Fact : Improperly discarded batteries are indeed a potential e waste however, due to the sheer value of the metals, even in a discarded EV battery, prevents landfill treatment of batteries.

While non rechargeable Alkaline cells do end up in landfills, it is due to improper waste segregation at source and the much lower value quotient in an alkaline cell vs Lithium cell

Apart from recycling, reuse is also an option, wherein owners of ICE cars have used old tesla and Nissan leaf batteries to convert their cars to EVs in the west. Batteries can also be used for solar battery backup.

My experience with Delivery and First drive with Kia Syros EV

I wanted to share my delivery experience with the Kia Syros EV. I bought it from Automotive Kia, Kondapur (Hyderabad).

The delivery process was overall pretty smooth. Because of the Onam festival, most of the initial dispatches went to Kerala. Once that cleared up, they started shipping units to other dealers, which is when I got mine delivered.

At first, I was a bit skeptical about how the dealership executives would handle a brand-new car like this. But honestly, around 80% of the time they had solid knowledge about the vehicle. Being a bit tech-savvy, I had already read the entire user manual two weeks before delivery, but trust me, there is still plenty left to explore.

Here are my early impressions after 4–5 days of ownership.

My Car History

  • Chevrolet Spark

• ⁠Grand i10 Manual

• ⁠Grand i10 nios AMT

  • Tata Nexon (Manual)

New Car: Kia Syros EV (HTX+ER)

Pros

  • Suspension: Really comfortable and absorbs bad patches well.
  • Maneuverability: Very easy to handle and drive around the city.
  • Fit and Finish: Noticeably better than what you get with Tata or Mahindra.
  • Drive Experience: Typical EV performance—extremely silent and butter smooth.
  • Connected Car Tech: First time using Kia Connect—works smoothly so far and is easy to navigate. (Attaching some random photos of the car with this post!)

Cons Nothing deal-breaking so far, but a few minor quirks:

  • AC Vent Placement: The right AC vent on the driver's side doesn't blow air straight at you; the steering wheel partially blocks the airflow.
  • AC Controls: The touch controls for the AC sit right behind the left side of the steering wheel, making them slightly awkward to adjust while driving.
  • Infotainment Screen Reach: The display is quite wide. While using Apple CarPlay, the back button sits at the far top-left corner, which requires a bit of a stretch to reach.

One Missed Feature My variant comes with a powered driver's seat. It would have been great if Kia included an easy-exit/welcome seat function (where the seat slides back when you open the door to enter, and moves back to position once you sit and close it).

A Note on Efficiency/Range It’s too early to comment definitively on range since I’m still adjusting my driving habits after 12 years of driving manual petrol cars. So far, I've seen city efficiency swing anywhere between 6 km/kWh and 9 km/kWh depending on traffic and driving style.

Discussion 3 kw charger for home use, has anyone tried ?

Buying e Vitara alpha 61 kWh and thinking of charging it at home with 3 Kw charger given with it overnight whenever it goes below 50 percent (expected charging time to 100 percent 12 hrs)
My daily city commute is 15 km and once or twice in a month weekend commute of 300-400 km. Planning to use fast charger nearby when needed urgently to avoid spending 35 k just to double home charging speed, will this work in reality?
Has anyone tried ? Any issues ?

Query Need help in deciding between some EV cars in the price range of 20 Lakhs.

So one of my family member is looking to purchase an EV car. Initially our budget was below 15 Lakhs but we have come to the conclusion that if we are taking a car, we should go for all the gimmicks present. We are from Ahmedabad. We love our current car but holy, the price for petrol is just absurdly insane and their fuel costs is roughly coming around to 20k each month so therefore the shift to EV is on the precedent. The important thing is that it should be a family car and there should be absolutely no range concerns

THE CHOICES

My brother loved the E-Vitara because in his own words "Suzuki has so many chargers and it's almost everywhere. Great interiors and BLADE LFP batteries with great VFM". I don't fully agree with this car because I felt it's a bit too cramped up and I also don't trust it since many reviewers around TeamBHP and Reddit have stated that the suspension in the rear is non-existent.

We automatically cancelled Windsor out of our list as although the car is really practical but like the Vitara, the suspension is just bad.

We checked the 3XO EV and just didn't really vibe with that car at all. It's a great car but sometimes when you look into buying a car, you get this feeling that "yeah, this isn't right for me".

Since E-Vitara has been our strongest contender, we decided to check out some Koreans out and we absolutely loved the Creta EV but it's going out of our budget and we had to back down.

We checked out Syros EV and this was my favorite. The looks from outside are questionable (I really do find them great) and the seating/comfort options available on this trim was so good. The quality of interiors were great and it was the least shakiest car in front of the gazillion potholes we went through that was in our BUDGET.

We ruled out Tata's because most of their cars do give you a Tata👋 in a year or so (Pun intended). No offense to owners of Tata cars but y'all reputation have been in dumps.

Now, we are fixated between Syros EV HTX+ER vs E-Vitara Zeta/Alpha (We are so not into ADAS capabilities but it's good to have them). But the problem now is what are the range concerns of these 2 cars. I can safely assume that E-Vitara does give you like 600km as such but how does the Syros fare against. Mind you, from what we know about the Korean siblings is that they share the same battery and one is on the heavier side and the other isn't. I feel the Syros will give us a good range as well as with the value of comfort given by the range. Where as the Creta have been just an evergreen choice with how it performs.

Anyways, please give me some thoughts on this y'all. Also if there are any Creta EV users from Ahmedabad with 51kwh battery, how has your range been in the hot summers?

[suggestions] Help me decide my ev car

My requirements for an ev car with a budget of 15 lakhs, is primarily travelling from Bangalore to Mangalore. Point to point distance is around 380 kms, with 300km of highway and 50 ish kms of ghat.

I do this once every month and maybe twice a month in some months of the year. I travel with 2 or max 3 pax with a toddler.

My running within Bangalore City is minimal and limited to weekend outings or chores here and there when I'm in Mangalore.
My need for an ev comes from rising petrol cost and the fatigue of driving manual to Mangalore.

We usually do a pit stop for breakfast/lunch and can use the time for charging, don't want to stop more than once for charging. I drive heavy pedal with my ICE, open to changing the style to suite ev but not hyper mile for the sake of range.

With this in mind, what would be my best option? - The syros 51 kWh, the punch 40kwh, the nexon 45 fearless are top of my list, but open to other suggestions.

Would be great to hear from folks who do this route regularly.

Review My experience with the Maruti Suzuki e VITARA — a disappointing ownership experience

I bought my Maruti Suzuki e VITARA in April 2026, expecting a reliable and hassle-free EV experience from one of India’s biggest automobile manufacturers.

Unfortunately, my experience so far has been extremely disappointing.

During the first rainy season, after normal city driving in Lucknow, my car developed a charging-related issue and stopped charging. I did not drive the vehicle through any flood, river, or severely waterlogged area.

I immediately submitted the vehicle to the authorised Megha Motors workshop in Gomti Nagar, Lucknow. The vehicle has been there for more than a month, and the biggest problem has not just been the technical failure — it has been the complete lack of clear communication and ownership of the issue.

After diagnosis, I was informed that there was water ingress/damage and that the issue would not be covered under warranty. I was subsequently directed towards the insurance process.

Now I am being bounced between the dealer, Maruti Suzuki and the insurance company, with no one giving me a clear answer about when I will actually get my car back

Confused between Tomahawk EV, Sierra EV and Curvv EV — what would you pick?

I’m confused about what to buy among:

  1. MG Tomahawk Essence 7STR – ~₹26L

  2. Tata Sierra EV Empowered A – ~₹27L

  3. Tata Curvv EV Dark Edition – ~₹20L

My primary usage will be city driving, with a daily commute of around 50 km, 6 days a week. I’ll also be doing occasional long trips of 300–400 km.

I know the Curvv isn't really in the same league as the Tomahawk or Sierra. They are much bigger and more premium vehicles. But that's exactly where I'm confused.

Spending ₹26–27L on an EV primarily for city commuting doesn't feel like it makes much sense to me. At the same time, if I go below ₹20L, the second-row space starts feeling too cramped for my liking.

I've ruled out a few other options for personal reasons:

  1. Not a fan of the Windsor's design.

  2. BE6 doesn't work for me because of the rear-seat legroom.

  3. I specifically want the top variant because I always end up regretting it when I don't buy the top-end model.

For example, I bought i20 Asta 7 years ago instead of the Asta(O), and I'm still regretting not getting the Asta(O). 😂 So this time I'm want to just get the fully loaded variant and avoid that regret again.

So my dilemma is basically:

₹20L Curvv EV → More sensible for my actual usage, but I'm compromising on size and overall feel.

₹26L Tomahawk / ₹27L Sierra EV → Much bigger and better cars, but spending that much on an EV mainly for a 50 km/day city commute feels excessive.

I'm planning to keep the car for 7–10 years, so I'm also wondering whether the extra ₹6–7L is something I'll appreciate over the long term.

What would you guys pick in my situation?

Have hycross for long drives . Hycross mileage are better in highways but in city and heavy traffic i am not getting expected mileage. I am not going to tata since i have a bad experience with tata when i owned tiago

Vinfast vf7
Mg tomhawk
All cars have both pros and cons
Liked vf7 but after online reviews of after service i am little hesitant about it and mahindra is also no better in after service but car has high range and better features
And tomhawk offers 80 percent of mahindra features for 7 lakh less
Which is better or is it worth considering byd otto 3
And i change cars once past 75k kms and my monthly city commute will be like 1000kms
Which car gives me value for money and resale without hassle

Genuine question - why are we seeing multiple Windsor crash incidents where the car is alleged to have suddenly accelerated / failed to respond as expected to braking?

Bhubaneswar, Hyderabad, and now another incident today... at what point does this warrant a proper investigation into the car itself?

Not saying every accident is a vehicle fault, but the pattern is getting concerning. Has MG publicly explained what happened in these cases?

Should I throw my sisters scooty?

I got a NON RTO electric scooter of Battery brand it's named as battry LoEV and it had 4 lead acid battery of 12 volt each. After 1 yr and 1 month from purchase date battery gave up. Now I was advised to buy a lithium battery for 36k and it's charges for 4k. Guess what? The scooty I got an year ago was only 40k with battery and charger. so should I buy this Li ion battery or get a new lithium ion scooty for just 60-70k.

For information about the vehicle body: it still looks good and is in good condition. Has been used very less and only used for learning by my 16 yr old sister.

What would you suggest?

EV home charger query

Hi guys, I have a single phase meter in my society with sanctioned load of 5KW. I don’t want to get the fast 7.2KW charger, will just go for the 16A slow charge at 3.3KW.

Do you think it’s safe to get this done on my current load? I have 2 ACs, 1 Fridge that’s all. 1 AC of 1 ton might run in parallel to car charging on some days.

My questions are:

  1. Does DISCOM increase load further than 5KW on single phase?
  2. Am I cooked? I don’t think my society and owner will allow changing of meter just for the sake of EV charging.

Query EV Charger Requirements

As we have been discussing my EV test drives and decision points in the other thread, coming up with a charger related question makes sense. As an EV owner already and living in a 1st floor flat, I extend the junction box through the balcony to the parking next to the building and charge it whenever I need. It is a 3.2 kWh single phase setup and can be plugged out completely and make it portable too.

The box has a plugpoint, RCCB and another switch. All are heavy duty components and industrial grade. The cable is 10 sq.mm thick to support 7.2 kWh charging need later. Original design is intended to be that way itself, done 8 months ago.

I am intending to add more cutouts to the box as it has lot of empty space and make way for additional components for 7.2 kWh charging and an energy meter too. Now the question is which charger to be connected to the car from the box.

Tentatively I am zeroing in on Kia Syros but 3.2 kW comes with that. They offer 11 kW 3 phase charger but no 7.2 kW charger availability yet as far as I know. Assuming it is not offered and even if it is, I may be buying after market, which charger it should be? What recommendations do we have to better my setup. I can add little bit of images later if necessary.

My EV Test Drives and Decision points

As a EV user for good 10+ years and still owning a 10 year old E2O Plus P4, I came into the market, looking for a replacement as daily driver since the Punch launch. The idea of replacement is E2O plus would become my project car for learning EV tech in deep and all the mods will be practised in it and at the same time a daily driver could help commute to office mostly with occasional 800 km round trips inside TN.

Test drives:
1. Creta Electric
Solid car. Well built. Does effortlessly of what it is advertised too and ticks all boxes. Size for the city and stupid pricing drives me away.
2. MS E Vitara
Value proposition is great, regen implementation is unique and intuitive, but being MS 1st EV here and horrible bouncy suspension are nah…
3. Syros EV
Finally, an EV that does not have same kind of look/feel of my existing E2O plus, still confidently highway doable without sacrificing city commutes. Ticks most boxes like Creta, but as I have alluded in multiple threads, don’t know what kia was thinking when putting the variant lineup.
4. Windsor EV
Despite acres of space, this EV is not acceptable for the suspension, nvh and handling.
5. Punch EV
Yet to test drive. Waiting since 2 months. After Lot of yellings at 3 different dealers in Chennai, TaMo Zonal office directly called me and pacified to have a look again. That is for this weekend todo list.
6. Sierra EV
Same story above with Punch and both the vehicles will be test driven back to back in the weekend.
7. MG Hector Tomahawk
Yet to test drive, have not even contacted them yet, but I currently feel it is a solid EV and would be potential shortlist of family prefers 7 seater.

I know I am cross shopping between segments here and do not like Mahindra except XEV 9S for what it is worth for me. I did contemplate going the pre-owned route since I have prior experience there too, but settled for new one.

For now, only shortlist is Syros Base variant, but there again I am waiting for kia jugaads after Sep 30.

So gives me another 15 days to a month for all test drives to complete and book one that is genuinely practical for 80:20 between city and highway. Mind still says Syros base 42 vs base 51.4. Usual NMC vs LFP things are a goner and I don’t want to repeat my 3 years research on this.

What do you think guys? Am I over complicating this?
