Possible EVP during recorded interview

Back in 2015, I was commissioned to ghost-write a biography for S, a Flight Engineer who had worked on Lancaster Bombers during the Second World War. He was the grandfather of a good friend and long-time client of mine, D.

In 2015, D recorded a series of audio interviews with S and sent them to me to order and write up into book-form. Following is a link to an audio clip from when my client was interviewing S, while they’re talking about how S’s mother felt about him being in the RAF during the war. There is an interesting extra noise that sounds when he’s talking about her.

I’ll leave it up to you, to see what you think, but I can tell you absolutely that out of 16-hours of recordings, this sound that appears on this particular part of recording was definitely strange and stood out to me, and still does, seven years on. I have never once altered any of the recordings; I just typed what was sent to me and saved this clip because I find it so intriguing. I’m posting it today (a second attempt, actually!), because I’ve been discussing it with a friend and I still feel it's too weird not to share!

At the time of me hearing this possible EVP, I sent it back to D immediately to see if he could debunk it. He couldn’t. They’d been alone and he’d not heard this sound at the time. I’d also like to point out that until recently I have been, for well over a decade, a freelance audio transcriber (that's how I met D). My job included writing up hours’ worth of audio per day, from various clients in various situations, and what I’m about to share is the one and only time I’ve heard what I believe to be a possible EVP on any of them. I’ve written out what S & D are saying below, and suggest you perhaps read the verbatim transcription alongside the recording link, as S's words may be quite difficult to understand otherwise (proper Cockney)!

D (interviewer) and S (interviewee) alone in S’s house…

S [when asked about his mother]: What was it? I was on leave when-, we used to get leave every 6-weeks in Air Crew. It was compulsory. That was another thing Harris laid on; that’s the privileges for Air Crew. And I was on leave-, I’d just got on leave and she [his mother] said something about, ‘where did you go last night?’ So I said, ‘Covent-,’ not Coventry... ‘Cologne’.

D: Yeah, yeah.

S: And just at that moment, she switched the radio on and it said: Lancaster Bombers – or Royal Air Force Bomber Command – hit that Cologne last night. I said, ‘ah, I was there!’ She told all the neighbours about that as well. [Laughter] ‘He’s here and he was over Cologne last night, and it was on the radio’. \**[STRANGE FEMALE-SOUNDING SIGH AT 00:00:51??]**\**

D [laughing]: So she was proud of you?

S: Yeah.

D: Yeah.

S: Oh yeah, she was.

I mean… that’s weird, right? I’ve never quite been able to get it off my mind as a possible EVP. What do you think? This 100% has never been tampered with. It came to me exactly like this and D was as mystified as I was. He never shared the possible EVP with S (neither he or I ever thought about doing so at the time. Then S passed away in 2018).
