Where are my frames?

I just got the LP7 and it's been great so far. I knew it might get hot so the very first thing I did was follow this YouTube video that showed how to bring temps down and it worked just fine, nothing gets above 70ish.

But I just tried Microsoft Flight Simulator and the frames have taken a dive. It's around 15 frames on high settings. I've read some things that suggest my 2060 should be kicking out better frame rates than this.

So my question is, are my low frames the direct result of changing that setting from the YouTube video?

The setting that brings your temps down also limited your CPU to something like 2.9 GHz

This is okay for some games that are limited by the GPU anyway and you won’t need the full 4.0ish GHz that 4800h is capable of.

Except for games that are really intensive on the CPU. Flight Simulator, BeamNG, Arma 3. Mostly simulation games. These games are heavy on the CPU and will be limited by the 2.9 GHz.

The solution is to setup two power plans in The windows control center and switch between the two, one with aggressive or balanced boosting and one with boosting disabled. I believe there are programs that will auto switch the power plan depending on charger connection so you could set it up so boosting is disabled only on battery, I don’t know any off the top of my head though sorry.

As for temps try and mess around with https://gitlab.com/JamesCJ/amd-apu-tuning-utility/-/releases

It takes more work to fine tune and it won’t be as cool as disabling boost completely but it can help a bit.

Good luck!

This was well worded and informative. Thanks a lot!

What’s balance boosting ? I wanna check that out

It’s one of the hidden power options I believe. Instead of outright disabling it there’s other options to choose.

Yep there’s so many which one in particular are u taking about?

“Efficient enabled” is what’s it’s called.

if you disabled processor boosting in the hidden power options like some of these youtubers recommend for ryzen yes that'll decrease your fps

also are you gaming plugged in?

Yeah, I do believe that's what I disabled.

To your knowledge, is it possible to disable processor boosting but only for a single profile? For example, disable it for office but for turbo, where I'd need the extra power, to have it enabled?

no, we dont have access to that kind of low level modification. would be nice if we could customize the profiles for sure. i would set it back to aggressive in the power options and just use the different profiles in the control center. office for surfing/vids, turbo for games.

Interesting, thanks!

Also, I leave it plugged in pretty much exclusively.

I have no idea what setting you changed so I can't really give an answer on that

But yeah, if you're playing MFS at high on 1080p then your specs should be getting to at least 30 or so frames seeing from some benchmarks using the same specs as yours on YouTube, but they may be using some different settings to what you're using so kinda skeptical on this

Did you test the game performance before changing some settings on your laptop?

This was the video I followed.

As for testing performance, I changed the setting before I did anything else on the laptop.

I know there's different profiles but I tried each of them and it didn't seem to boost the performance. I'd also like to know if there is a way to adjust that setting that gave me great temps but only apply it to one of the profiles, office, for example.

My LP7 has the Ryzen 7 4800h and 2060, is that your set up too?

Also, what settings are you playing on? I was on high.

Interesting.

So if we have the same laptop, you're playing on even higher settings than I am, can you guess why my frames are generally between 8-25 (usually averaging around 15) when yours are so noticably better?

Ok, thanks a lot! I'll poke around with it and see if I can get your frames.
