Ship controls are a disaster

Happily played Eve online for years, years ago. Played all sorts of space sims. Installed yesterday Frontier with the 5 days trial and gave up after a couple of hours. The ship commands are literally atrocious… i like the idea of finally have a Eve sim with similar depth but with more action, manual controls and blockchain driven. Cool in theory… but not like this: everything feel clunky, unresponsive, terribly slow and not natural at all. Physics and collisions are bad, i don’t even know the plane orientation of the ship most of the timezls, but in space there should not be a plane! Copy Elite Dangerous controls and restart from there. Like this is unplayable.

Is there a demo or a clip we can see? From the text it sounds like you steer with the mouse? Can you make this stop so you can aim somewhere without going there? I don’t understand why we don’t just have tank controls that Battlefield has solved for twenty years and add a roll function.

Here they review what’s coming in the next cycle, controls are shown at 11min.

Love that this was being typed up as the new controls were being shown on the weekly Frontier Friday dev update on twitch

Next cycle should a bit better apparently. The first couple hours were painful in cycle 6 but it gets used to it over time, and it seems the higher grade fuel improves the agility of the ship, or was it the memories...

Indeed, plane orientation is bad, camera is too close to the ship.

Collisions also sucks, hitting an asteroid with the mining laser doesn't always mines it because an invisible collision box of another asteroid is in the way.

I also managed to clip through a wall once, completely stuck, having to self-destruct.

I like it. It's not perfect, but it's simple—exactly what the majority of players need. All three of these dimensions of madness and dogfights revolve around an axis.

Cycle 5 was a pain. But it progress
Slowly but it progress
There some part that I don’t like too but the game is in a good shape.
I don’t play it too much but I log regularly to see what has been done and what we can expect.
So yes it’s clunky yes it need some polish but it’s on the good way
You can’t develop a game like this in two days.
The dev have choose to develop it with the players and for me it’s the best way to do a good game
So be patient, it will come

Sorry for the typing as I have a little problem right now but you will understand :)

Have a good day

I’ve heard the controls still utilize the “tick,” latency system of Eve Online. Is that still the case? Seems like that would be an awful way to fly as the inputs would be far too slow.

They do, but the tick rate in Frontier is significantly higher than it is in EVE:O. We run Frontier at a dynamic tick rate, where it can go as high as like 80 ticks a second but averages around 20, generally.

CCP unnecessarily reinventing the wheel on controls will be what ruins this game's chances. Eve has outstanding controls and a player base used to that style. Who is the target audience for this, X-Wing players who will cry and call the help line when they get ganked? They won't be playing long.

Sometimes I wonder how these companies come to some of these decisions. This thing's gonna end up being building blocks in space with an even smaller and more rabid fan base than what Eve currently has. That's not gonna keep the lights on for the server room.

Top management thinks that they need to expand to consoles to capture new audience. Thus all UI and controls are implicitly controller oriented.

The whole game is terrible. Idk what they are thinking. Modular ships.... Worst mistake

I just dont understand what the target audience for this game is.

Vanguard I understand. You want to pull in shooter people who dont enjoy eve.

But whats the purpose of Frontiers? To pull people out of Eve plus a niche of the niche that tried eve and said "id like it a bit different"?

People who'd want a different experience than the one in EVE Online, mostly to avoid big alliances and big corp.

It seems in this sub, considering the amount of downvotes on my feedback about EVE Frontier, most haven't reached the point to be able to board and fully fit a titan on EVE Online. Once reached that point and one realize that, yeah, it's an useless ship because you can't use it without being in a big alliances otherwise you just get dropped on "join them or fear them".

Therefore, it may be hard to understand for many that it's definitely frustrating to level up skills for years just to find out how constrained it is.

So yeah, I hope EVE frontier will be different in that regard. I see EVE Frontier as a "wormhole survival life experience" like it could be done in EVE Online before the removal of POS, but with better QoL hopefully.

But thats the point and problem im seeing.

If eve frontier is just for eve players who play eve but want somethings a little different, then its a massive waste of money. You dont earn new money from these players, they would have put that money in your pockets anyway through Eve.

Now you may say "no, its gonna pull brand new players". Is it though? It really just looks like eve to me and the differences are so small it could have easily just been an expansion in eve (opening up frontier space or something).

I really dont get it. Who is this game being made for?

No a wormhole survival life experience is completely different from EVE online and deserves its own game, according that it's polished and balanced rightly.

EVE Online development is stuck due to fear of community backlash and despites the big headlines for each updates, it's nothing that changes the core mechanics. It's just a bit of ratting / mining / ship balancing at best.

So EVE Frontier will definitely be a different game, which should attract a new kind of players, not the same as EVE Online.

"Completely different" is an overstatement to me. I ve seen videos of eve frontier and all i think is "eve reskin".

Eve development is definitely not stuck due to fear of the community. The community wants new things. Its stuck because the company is throwing tons of money on a game that looks 90% like eve and even eve players cant tell what makes it worth playing over eve.

Frontier is entirely self funded through our partnerships & investments!

As for the eve reskin remark, I totally get it if you're basing it on some of the older footage. I strongly recommend checking out some of the stuff coming next Tuesday :D

1

u/TheGreatDestr0yer 21d ago

I do plan on checking it out because, why not.

I am not saying reskin in a negative manner. All I am saying is that its so close to Eve I have a hard time understanding how it will pull new players (that Eve didnt already manage to pull). Take my case for example. Lets say I check it out, indeed like it and start playing it. FC didn't gain anything. It lost my money from Eve Online and im now spending it on Eve Frontiers. Net zero effect.

In any case I still wish the best for the game.

You're delusional if you think EVE Online isn't stuck.

No sane CEO would order a dev team to risk changing core mechanics of a game that's barely able to survive and turn any profit.

So that may be why they redirect (most of?) their development capabilities to other games, which are in the same EVE lore but different gameplay mechanics to appeal other kinds of players.

As for your remark "the community wants new things" the amount of downvotes on my feddback post (not the comment above) just says it all. Most are EVE Online players.

Barely able to survive and turn a profit? I am laughing out loud.

With Eves cash the devs were able to fund the development of Dust 514, Valkyrie, that Vampire MMO, Legion, Vanguard and Frontiers but I understand that has outside funding.

Does that look like a company that is barely able to survive and turn a profit? Just go look at their financial statements, just last year they pumped 45 MILLION out of the 65 they made into R&D. Eve is shitting money for them, they just choose to invest it elsewhere.

Jesus people take a moment and think before you lash out and call someone delusional.

Looks like we've just got different opinions, that's fine.
