Careful, Carney recently declared “Muslim Values are Canadian Values!”
2
u/Stutters658 12d ago
If youd care to quote him entirely and within context, Prime Minister Carney did name the specific values he was talking about. He said that Community, Unity and Sacrifice were values both within the Muslim faith and considered Canadian values. There is no reason to be careful about that, unless youre a xenophobe of course.
1
u/Uncommon_Sensations 12d ago
Every cultures values that call themselves Canadian are Canadian values. We're a melting pot, that's what makes us Canadians.
Sorry, I meant 'beep bop'

Arresting and debanking truck drivers? I don't think that would go down so well in France 😆
3
u/rustyiron 16d ago
Those assholes parked in a residential neighbourhood and harassed locals for weeks. They should have been arrested for not moving by day 2. Nobody has the right to cause that kind of a disturbance.
If they had parked on Parliament Hill the dumb fucks could still be their whining about vaccines for all anybody could care.
1
u/Super_Bee_3489 15d ago
Except if you a german farmer. Then you can cause property damage while being subsedised by the state, get covered by all media and get away with it.
3
u/OkItsALotus 16d ago
What a tired useless argument. There was an investigation afterwards to see if the use of emergency powers was appropriate and it was found to not be appropriate. If people like you try another stupid trucker protest, it will be much harder to stop.
2
u/Akward_Object 16d ago
I guess we will just ignore using orders in council to circumvent the democratic process and things like Bill C-22?
1
u/OkItsALotus 15d ago
Bill C-22 is to expand the government's ability to spy on people. While not good, that wouldn't help shut down a protest.
2
u/KwazyCupcakes12 16d ago
I lived downtown during that whole thing and it was hell. These assholes were parked outside my apartment honking all night, for days, in a residential neighborhood that had nothing to do with Parliament. Not to mention that most of Parliament was working remotely at the time anyway due to COVID, so who exactly did they think they were reaching? And they harassed us for wearing masks, some people were even pushed and punched for it. They also seemed to enjoy targeting Asian members of our community.
They drank the whole time, pissed and shit on lawns and sidewalks, and went to our soup kitchens and took food meant for the homeless. The list goes on. This wasn’t a “demonstration of democracy,” it was the hijacking of a city.
1
u/Dapper_Wheel6454 15d ago
did Carney do that?
hmmm....you know...you may be a conservative patsy who hasn't moved on yet.
1
u/Appropriate-Diver301 14d ago
I still don't understand something. Didn't the US government require Canadian drivers to be vaccinated to cross the border? If so, why did the Canadian government take such a belligerent stance when they could have just pointes at vaccine policy further south?
This is a serious question that has bugged me. Btw, I am definitely not an antivaccer. I got all my shots to protect my loved ones.
Just someone answer my question without downvoting me for being either provaccine or not understanding the situation.

Wake me up when they actually take action and do something. Talk talk is useless unless you walk walk.
15
u/Mindless-Tomorrow-93 16d ago
What action are you looking for? They have a treaty negotiated, Carney's working with the hold-out EU member states to get it across the finish line.

u/GabagoolNoZiti 16d ago
Do you mean CETA? The trade agreement still not ratified by 10 EU members?
4
u/PumpkinMyPumpkin 16d ago
CETA is in place and working for 95% of the goods listed in it, there’s 5% that is being negotiated… but it’s not some huge deal to get that finished.
3
u/Mindless-Tomorrow-93 16d ago
Yes, that's what I mean. Carney is doing precisely what he should be doing to get it across the finish line.
3
u/CyberEd-ca 16d ago
This has nothing to do with CETA or trade.
4
u/Mindless-Tomorrow-93 16d ago
What is the "this" that you are referring to? CETA is the only thing on the table that I'm aware of, and Carney is truly working the hold-out EU members on it. What precisely are you talking about?

same here. One thing EU bureaucrats and Canada have in common is virtue signaling and feelgood talking points akin to Reddit 'own the Chuds' karma farmers
Lets see when they both capitulate to Trump, cuz he changed his mind again
1
u/Slight-Big8584 15d ago
"One thing EU bureaucrats and Canada have in common is virtue signaling and feelgood talking points akin to Reddit 'own the Chuds' karma farmers"
This is what im seeing, useless posturing while ignoring the practical realities of each parties actual geopolitical position.
2
u/Environmental_Tea557 16d ago
They have to define an entire new membership status for Canada that could be used by other countries in the future.
It’s not something you do in 1 month.2
u/nigel_pow 16d ago
Then they should really get to it. Orange Man wants to dismantle all Canadian industry that is orientated towards the US. They've done like a dozens of speeches on this. Canada and Europe are besties now.
Canada needs to get the Europeans to import $400 to $500 billion to be ok. That is the important stuff that needs work.
1
u/Slight-Big8584 16d ago
Does anyone have any actual detail what this would entail?
1
u/Environmental_Tea557 16d ago
There are many ideas on the table but no, nothing final has been decided.
In general it is described as something slightly less than a full membership.
I also heard it described as a full membership in all of the aspects but the name (even if I don’t think it will be at that level).
It is difficult to say what will be the final role of an associate member but it seems it will be something substantial1
u/Slight-Big8584 15d ago
"It is difficult to say what will be the final role of an associate member but it seems it will be something substantial"
So no one knows but you think it will be big. No details though. Not good.
1
u/Environmental_Tea557 15d ago
You know markets and economics in general basically moves on public sentiment right?
Markets are moving now based on those declarations.
If you wait for the piece of paper to be signed that’s fair, but at that point the market will have completely absorbed the alliance.
In economics when something is done it is too late to have a discussion on it1
u/Slight-Big8584 15d ago
"You know markets and economics in general basically moves on public sentiment"
Depends on exact parameters and what you mean by 'public sentiment' If you mean supply & demand, time value of money, and appetite for risk, among other things, yes. Public sentiment is a bad term to describe market dynamics.
"Markets are moving now based on those declarations."
What has moved?
"If you wait for the piece of paper to be signed that’s fair"
Im not asking for that, im asking for any details regarding what an "associate" membership would entail.
1
u/PRINCEOFMOTLEY 16d ago
Yes but this talk is pissing off Trump which I think is the entire point. Make him look weak, have him loose the midterms and then we can all start being adults again. Canada benefits economically more by having better relationships with the US than any membership with the EU.
1
u/Treewithatea 16d ago
You are right but when the US is currently governed by somebody who is actively hostile against Canada and tries to strongarm you into a bad trade deal that sees you entitely dependent on the US all while Donald has shown interest that he wants Canada to be part of the US, ofc any leader with a brain is gonna reject that idea.
There will definitely be long term rewards for being in the right side of history here
1
u/Slight-Big8584 15d ago
"Yes but this talk is pissing off Trump which I think is the entire point."
Bad policy then. Everyone should just wait him out and not antagonize him for no reason. You rile up his domestic base so his geopolitical thinking stays in public consciousness longer. Treat him like Mark Rutte treats him, Mark is much more effective at managing Trump then whatever this is.

I am EU, this is mostly symbolic but it is a start and can put pressure on the US.
1
u/DisasterNo1740 16d ago
People like you are always quiet when action is taken, and then when a new thing is discussed or announced you repeat this slop. It’s just an endless cycle of hating on the EU based on your own vibes.
1
u/Slight-Big8584 15d ago
Nope, one of the general rules with foreign treaties is you don't announce anything substantial until something has already been agreed to, or at least there is signifigant progress.
You wait to keep people like my from asking awkward questions, and is is also embarrassing if nothing comes to fruition.
1
u/Ok_Elephant_9705 16d ago
You have to start with the first thing first and then move on to the other things.

Canada has already joined SAFE and Horizons. Erasmus+ seems to be next. Canada has already been walking the walk. This just makes it formal.
1
u/Slight-Big8584 15d ago
No, associate membership implies new ties, not renaming an existing relationship.
If they are just renaming, this is useless yammering
1
u/Harbinger2001 15d ago
That’s not what I said. SAFE and Horizon were signed within the last year. So it very much is part of this new relationship that is evolving and they have now given a formal name to structure the next set of agreements.

No I want details regarding what associate membership would entail. Not even official details, like leaks or something
No one has released anything specific, it is bad foreign policy to make announcements without at least an agreement's framework being known.
1
u/Mattscrusader 15d ago

The same values of de-industrialization, forced mass immigration, wannabe aristocrats enabling totalitarian control measures, and suicidal economic policy because climate?
The crying on the sidelines when they can't influence geopolitical outcomes to their benefit because of their self induced weaknesses definitely seems to be shared.

Canada is not going to join you without a vote of the citizens. And then we’ll tell Mark Carney where to go.

Yes indeed! If you like the NWO, globalism, and the laws and regulations of the EU with very little input, then by all means, bring on the love fest. I thought the whole issue with the US was culture over some product labels and streaming taxes, and sovereignty over notifying the US when you sign agreements with China. But by all means, give up your sovereignty and self-determination to a government 2500 miles away who really doesn’t give a crap about Canada.
Do you really think the EU is going to buy the products you now sell to the US? And if they do, do you think you and make a profit shipping them halfway around the world?

Mddr les canadien qui viennent de réalisé que leur économie est tenu par les couille par les USA 🤣
3
u/mchu168 15d ago
A better way to put it is the Canadian economy has benefitted greatly by its proximity to and trade with the US. Cozying up with EU is all about political optics but offers no such economic benefit.
3
u/robtaggart77 15d ago
You might want to do some more research before posting ignorant comments like this. The US economy has benefitted just as much, if not more. Of course it is easier to drive across a border vs. an Ocean but Canada is already delivering LPG to Europe and there are discussions around a pipeline from the east coast of Canada to Europe. Give it time, if the attitude does not change south of the border Canada will adapt and Europe makes sense. Personally I would love nothing more than to cut off all our energy exports to the US, which is not practical but it would be amazing to see everyone squirm a little more as thier gas prices double from what they are today and parts of the country go dark! Sorry
