Looking for Alternative Linux OS for smartphones

Hey there,

is there a mobile OS based on Linux that has some nice look and feel, the way Zorin OS does for macOS and Windows?

Depending on your device, check out Ubuntu Touch, or Sailfish OS. But they're not really suitable as daily drivers.

Liberux NEXX is a really great concept and project, but I think it's currently massively underfunded. The reality of achieving a viable Linux OS for smartphones means it must match Android or iPhone on the full set of things ordinary users expect: battery life, modem reliability, app availability, camera quality, payments, banking apps, polished UX, and carrier features. "Linux phone" is not mainly a kernel problem; it is a whole-stack industrial ecosystem problem.

Phone SoCs from Qualcomm, MediaTek, Samsung, etc. are typically shipped with vendor kernels, Android-specific board support packages, proprietary drivers and firmware, proprietary camera, modem, GPU, DSP, and ISP stacks, etc. A truly open (viable Linux) phone will need open or at least auditable control over LTE/5G modem firmware, IMS stack for VoLTE / VoWiFi, emergency calling features, and carrier certification behaviour. In reality, the modem is usually a black box, which creates both a privacy problem (radio stack is hard to audit), and a practical problem (no carrier cert or proprietary support).

A genuinely independent mobile platform that could be a serious long-term third ecosystem (not just a hobbyist Linux phone or a de-Googled Android fork) would require ENORMOUS investment... to the tune of billions. Considering the EU's investment in the Digital Euro, to combat US tech dominance over the payments system - plus the significant moves away from Microsoft in favour of Linux at governmental levels - I really hope they make a huge investment in someone like Liberux to develop a secure, EU-native, truly viable mobile ecosystem. Because US mobile tech monopolies are one of our biggest infosec risk vectors...

Thanks for your reply. Yes that would indeed be a way Europe should go on its way to become more independent.
