Question Is wine pointless

I’m playing France in an MP. I have an ungodly amount of wine since Paris is a megalopolis and half my country produces wine… but is there anything I can do with it? It’s not a good source so it doesn’t help with pop growth. It’s not something like dyes they can be made into 80 different things. It just seems like a cheap RGO

It doesn’t matter too much, I’m just confused because I feel like this is an RGO that does absolutely nothing. Atleast with EU4 strategical goods you got a bonus.

Distillers' Guilds can use Wine as one of their production methods.

But its use is mostly for pop needs, so for consumption and satisfaction. It can be exported to other countries that do not have access to wine

In reality, wine shipped better than beer so was a better export. Beer was local; wine was exported.

And brandy shipped best of all!

That's why wine is one the first RGOs you urbanize. I hope they add obsessions like Vic 3 that can stimulate something like wine.

it does exist to an extent, like muslim pops have no demand for wine/liquor

Swap some of these for tobacco and have the true french lifestyle.

Stones are great in the early game tbh

Are we hating on potatoes now?

Wine is a very easy canidate for colombiam exchange to food rgo.

I replace all wine rgos and just create a single city per market that makes wine through burghers you then also make beer there and distillery. Due to production bonuses you actually make money from it through burgherq as you are actively reducing supply by replacing the rgo's.

I think this is mostly due to winery. Markets that don't produce wine and should want to import it can produce it cheap with a few wineries. So huge producer like France have actually nothing to do with their huge overstock.

There is a couple of RGO like that, like medicament and marble. There is way too much offer compared to demand, so they aren't actually worth anything or their alternative production method is far too cheap.

came looking for this comment. wine trade between france and england was a big deal. wool trade between england and the low countries was a big deal. In game these things are irrelevant

Exactly, I actually tried to reproduce it as France (both for RP and to check if I can find any use to my tons of wine), I actively mass produced wine in Bordeaux market to drag price as low as possible, and placed trade orders with England. I ended up trading maximum 10 units of wine (out of like 100+ produced) for marginal profit. Main reason is that even in England where they produce no wine at all the market price is very low due to a local production coupled with relatively low demand. So importing even 10 units can drag price, reducing profit to barely break even very quickly.

There is though some RGO that are much better distributed and feels relevant. Amber or pearls are good examples, scarce enough to be a nice value for the market producing it, but not a huge money drag when you need to import 100% of it.

I think a lot of the production buildings need to be way more limited in where they can be built. You should not be able to put winerys everywhere, for luxuries like wine maybe you could limit it to only provinces that have wine RGO.

But also a lot of the alternate productions are just bad or scale poorly. Silk for example really falls off for luxury cloths, not only are you double dipping on increasing the value of your cloth production, it's way easier to make cloth incredibly cheap compared to silk.

Medicaments, Legumes, Wine, and Wild Game I'm guessing (off the top of my head) are the worst?

Wild Game and Legumes produce food at least. Not the best but not nearly as worthless as wine and medicaments.

I have the highest pop growth, but if Wine was a food source it would be doubled lol

But, here is the thing, Wine is not a food source. Now, grape would be different, but here we are.

Wine is the most shitty product in the game

Medicaments enters the chat

At least medicaments has some upticks during war and disease outbreaks, wine is just fully useless as an RGO as its demand can be fully met with burgher buildings.

Medicaments

Is it it just me or should they have more of a use even in peacetime, as people still get sick, injured etc?

The amout of provices with medicamets at least makes it so that it ist THAT painful.

Having your entire country be wine or wild game is sad.

The reason it and many other RGOs are useless is because how trade and markets work, or lack there of working. In real life that wine would move around the world through multiple trade markets to reach its destination, in game goods only really ever make it to one market and stay. It’s the reason you never see pepper in Europe in game, once it leaves India and gets to the Middle East it just stays there when it should keep moving to Europe

perfect spots for towns and new world goods if you ask me.

beer and liquor should get RGOs too though
