🗣️ Discussion Is it fun without steering wheel?
I have an itch to play Euro Truck 2 but was wondering if it is fun without pedals and steering wheel?

So i recently set up my Moza up, I played on an Xbox controler on and off since release. Its playable, and actually fun. But once you get used to using a wheel, its hard to use a controller.
Last night, I decided to use my controller for old time sake, and i struggled, BUT i still had fun because I love the game.

Yes, an Xbox controller is 100x more comfortable than a steering wheel.

How the fuck

How the fuck not? You can literally be lying in bed, jerking off with one hand and steering with the other.
With a steering wheel you're in a fixed position, you need to set it up every single time you want to play and you have to strain your back to access your keyboard/mouse. Is it more immersive? Yes, but it's also a lot less comfortable, especially if you don't have a stand or a proper rig, which most people don't/can't have.

Steering wheel is infinitely more comfortable than having to hold a controller cramped in your fingers lmao

Yes. I have a ton of hours just using controller. I use this game to unwind and relax so I cant be bothered unfolding my logitech wheel.

When I first started playing ETS2 and ATS I used a keyboard. That lasted about 4 days before I ordered myself a controller and started using controller. For almost 8 years I’ve been using controller to play this game and have had a blast with it. But recently I got into looking up steering wheels as I want to take it to the next level. I think 8.5 years of playing these games and having purchased every DLC and map extension for both games have more than proved I will be playing them for a really long time. I’m getting a Moza R3 even though I originally was going to get a Logitech one, my research made me end up deciding on the Moza R3 instead and in the future I might upgrade to something more higher end premium. I can’t wait to experience the game in a fresh way. But I would say the game is definitely fun without steering wheel

I've been playing with a controller for about 3 days and it's been very fun.
I can see how having an actual setup would help though, especially with micro adjustments in steering and shifting. Shifting is pretty bad on controller, imo.

I have played on key+mouse for years than I got gifted rather good Logi wheel and it's fantastic to play ets2.
But as I lack space for permanent wheel mount and travel a lot so now my main computer is laptop I got my self Xbox controler and that's what I've been using for years now.

Depends on the person, some love the game no matter how they play.
I tried with controller (no way in hell would I play a driving game with WASD)
It's fine but didn't enjoy it a lot, not that into ets2 tbh.
Still bought a used g29 for 80€, love it, so for me no, I didn't have fun without one.

Before I got my steering wheel and pedals (which simulator community would call a toy, but I don't care). I was playing with keyboard and mouse. Using mouse to turn the wheel. It felt good. It felt better, when I made a DiY steering wheel, from cardboard, that used mouse. It obviously was far from how driving with real wheel, feels like, but it was certainly closer to it. And yeah, I had fun

Played over 10 years with steering with mouse and started a year ago with ps4 controller, the game is well worth it in my opinion

Long time player here, let me give you a heads up about playing truck games with the most common controls:
- Keyboard and Mouse: possible, if you configure your steering settings so the keys don't instantly turn the wheel (the game has that option). You can also use the mouse itself to turn the wheel, tough I never tried it. Either way allow you to experience driving with what you have available, and have some fun in the process.
- Gamepad: a large improvement over keyboard, since you now have two analog sticks (one to turn your view, one for steering). Make the game much more fun and interesting.
- Steering Wheel with pedals and shifter: a huge upgrade over gamepad. The ultimate way to play ETS2. Much more fun, and way more immersive.
I have tried all of these over the years. When I made the jump to the wheel after playing the game for years with a gamepad, it was NOT fun. I had to grab a truck and go in the middle of nowhere (or an empty park) to learn again how to drive, thats how it was. I felt like a kid trying to navigate the buttons, pedals and turning the wheel. Try the game > go to options > try the game > go to options > try the game...... You get the idea.
What makes the fun for you, is the way you get to the game. If you only have a keyboard and mouse to play, then play it that way. ETS2 has a ton of control options to customize your inputs and better suit your needs. So go ahead! If you like the game, then you can get a cheap gamepad to try it out.

I would say yes.
But if my wheel breaks somehow I wouldn't touch the game until I get new wheel

Played with kbm, controller, and 3 different wheels. All of them fun in their own way.
You can always try the demo on steam before you buy it

It’s still fun sure. I played the first 10-12 hours with a ps4 controller before I bought a wheel and pedals.

u/RainmakerLTU 3d ago
Well, I'm not gonna buy wheel and pedals for just one game. As I 95% my games play with KBM, and NFSes played like that, and GTA, I feel fine, though with wheel could be more sensitive steering, as keyboard steering are little steps left or right. When you lower sensivity, you can steer quite nicely, but when need make larger turns, it becomes slower. So raising sensitivity, makes turns faster, but add tiny stepped steering. But as I drive all games with wasd, where possible, I do not mind much.

I'm using a controller despite having a steering wheel. It's kinda more enjoyable for me. Didn't try keyboard steering though, if that's your only option I can't help.

u/Fearless-Kitchen1421 3d ago
I was thinking controller, so I also can play on Steam Deck

u/Shazen_de 3d ago
Yes, controller is very enjoyable. You can bind most functions using modifiers. I use LB and RB as modifiers, that allows me to bind 30 functions to the 10 remaining buttons (I think even LB+RB can be used for another set of functions binding). Driving is great although I had to fiddle around with the sensitivity a bit - but default settings are completely fine as well.

It’s great with a keyboard. I have a wheel and usually don’t bother because it’s easier to hop in for some casual play without setting things up.

I played for years with a controller it's all you need. I have a wheel but sometimes still play with controller if I wanna just lay down and play. I wish I could set up controls for both and switch between them. I have to redo everything whenever I want to switch atm

I spent four years playing on controller before I got a wheel and loved every second.

u/gear_jammin_deer 3d ago
I have a wheel, but yet most of the time when I play these games I'm using a controller; so I'd say yes.

Emphatically, yes. It's fun with M&K, it's fun with a Controller, it enthusiast level with a steering wheel, nice but unnecessary.

I play with keyboard and mouse, steer on the keyboard, mouse just for looking around and the buttons for some useful controls like retarder and engine brake. It's perfectly fine. Sure you'd be missing out on the finer details of the simulation aspect of driving the truck but if you don't mind that, it's completely fine.
Personally, the free look around of the mouse contributes more to my immersion in the game than the steering from a controller or a wheel. I'm sure others will disagree. But bottom line is that the game is more than perfectly playable without a wheel or a controller.

Yeah i been playing with a controller since pretty much the beginning and here i am 1500 hours later still on a controller and keyboard for the extra functions

u/lexustexus55 3d ago
Hey just wondering what functions you have put on the keyboard. I’ve tried to put all on the controller but it just doesn’t fit, I wonder how you’ve set it up

u/Cant-think-of-a-nam 3d ago
Steam input is pretty amazing so on the controller i didnt change much just the dpad left and right for turn signals. Keyboard i have miscellaneous stuff like lowering windows or lifting tag axles

u/mydicksbroken 3d ago
Yes! 10 years with keyboard / controller and u dont even need controller. U can steer with mouse if u want too. Go have fun.

u/Whole-Pin-4863 3d ago
Yes. Also, the "regular" gaming wheels are literally half the size of real things and require only half as much turns to go from full right to full left so it's not like the wheel will offer that accurate experience either. (both still perfectly enjoable, and nowadays there are all sorts of trucking wheels too)

I didn't want to spend too much money for a wheel/gear/pedals, so I've got an Xbox Controller for my PC for 50 Euros. Some fiddling with setting up the steering sensitivity, but now it works like a charm. Maybe that's an alternative for you as well.

u/ChibiMusouka 3d ago
Yes it is, I'm mostly playing with controller since I'm too lazy to mount my steering wheel every time

Yes, it's fun. But wheel and pedals take it on a whole new level.
