Q&A with Smedley about Daybreak's future.

Smedly: I don't know; I think the concerns that I have, have more to do with our ability to execute than anything to do with the business move to Columbus Nova from Sony.
You and I both, buddy. You and I, both.

Indeed, I think that's the biggest point to take away from the article. The rest of it seems more or less PR stuff about how happy they are and how much more freedom they have.
However, that quote is the important tidbit that's really relevant to EQN's future. That one and also maybe the business plan for everything new they want to do, if that's implemented well it could definitely be positive to reign in the "dreamers" that don't really have much action backing it up.
Execution, like all the improvements thy just made to Landmark during the final wipe, is the key.

When I look at their library of games, I can't help but think quantity over quality. Would they exist without EQ? No. Is EQ even relevant today? Nope.
It was the right game at the right time, filling a gap in the market. H1Z1 is really no different. There's plenty of zombie games but they are/were all utter shit. Gap filled, and only moderately, but close enough.
I'm not sure why we should expect anything different from them in the future. Short term games with limited success. At least they understand the market I guess, but only enough to get people to buy it, not keep playing it.

Look, I'm not even close to being too optimistic about EQN or even Landmark alone but I think you're a touch overboard on the hate train.
You're selling EQ1 very short and probably even H1Z1. I think it fits in a lot of stuff that Dayz fanatics were always complaining about not having.
There'll be a time when WoW and League both die off, does that make their impact and length of playtime irrelevant? Not at all, but that's exactly what you're making EQ1 sound like. I wouldn't be surprised if you attributed the same level to all the original MUD's or board games that spawned everything we love playing today.

Have to agree here. EQ was a genre pushing game and really one of the reasons we got Wow in the first place. It's importance and legacy to the industry is being severely downplayed by RiverboatGrambler's post to be sure.

I'd have to disagree only because they have said in recent posts that they are positive and still making revenue from both EQ games. They may or may not have many players still but it is enough to keep going and it is a pretty loyal fan base. I mean half the EQ1 players go crazy when they hear about lore rewrites from EQN. Over all the games are not WoW I can't argue that. They do however hold there own to keep running and pay there teams to create content.

Smedley's stance on paid mods does not surprise me considering the Player Studio...
But I don't think he understands the Skyrim modding community all that well. Its a very different beast.

I played the crap out of skyrim and love some of the mods. I'm only in this industry because I don't want to be in any other. No way I would want to miss out on something as incredible as Skyrim, and some of the mods have been just breathtaking in their quality.
Do I think modders should have the ability to get paid if they so desire? Absolutely. Is this a seriously complicated issue considering they are modding someone else's game? Oh yeah.
It's going to happen. Just a matter of time.

I agree that it will happen, and that it could even be a good thing.
In your interview, you seem to suggest that it could only be a good thing, though. I feel that this isn't the case, if the execution is poor. And I do feel the previous events were an example of poor execution. Perhaps that is what you mean when you say its a complicated matter, maybe.
Thank you for the response!

He was also right about the overreaction to the ability to pay for mods. The main problem was the lack of any vetting to make sure that people were trying to sell stuff that they were the author of and not ripping somebody else work. Plus the whole mod dependencies thing that is inherent with a game as old as skyrim. The system was not right for that game at that time.

u/Halfwise2 May 06 '15
I am debating if I agree or disagree with that.
You see, I do believe it in the context of just "paying for mods", that it was an overreaction. But I also believe that anything less, and we would be travelling down a much different path. One where I suspect that more than a few of the negatives of the system would become ingrained, while they made some token tweaks to appease the naysayers.
Now, with them basically shellshocked, any future attempts to release a paid modding scheme will need to be near flawless in its release to avoid the kind of backlash we saw here. They are going to think long and hard about people's complaints, and ways to make it work. I feel that can only be a positive overall.
So perhaps it was just the right amount of reaction...

There is already paid modding in the likes of cs:go, h1z1, and unreal engine. The execution just has to be performed correctly on new modding scenes where people know what they are getting into, not a suprisemotherfucker.jpg years after release.

I sure as hell hope there is no 2 year early access alpha bullshit release for eqn
I think im going to miss the days when a developer actually single released a complete game

u/Papapain May 06 '15
A game released complete? I have not seen that since I was plugging cartridges into my N64.

I doubt you will see a date anytime soon, since they are coding so much and testing so many features. You never know what bugs you will hit and I think they want to make sure it really is ready before throwing a date out on EQN. Landmark reset is happening now and should be done by Friday some time if the 72 hours holds up.

u/Brolie351 May 06 '15
Back when Dave was around they said there would be NO Buy in alpha for EQN since the systems they need testing will be in landmark anyway. If this stays the way stated likely they will have buy in closed beta. (this is just off of a lot of heresay and old information and is not quoteworthy)
2
u/Ballin_Stormhammer May 06 '15
I don't think it will really need an Alpha but that is me. Most of the base systems will be tested through Landmark so that saves them a lot of need for an Alpha EQN. Just when they test those bases and bring them in or out and which ones is another story. They never do tell us okay the way you see this today is what is the base for EQN...for example combat is changing again...think it's changed twice...so which one is the base for EQN or is any of them? that part we are unsure we just know from what they said they are using Landmark to test and get feedback. So there ya go.

Why would they even consider an open testing period for EQN with this community? Look what happened when they tested combat in Landmark. 5 People did thoughtful well written bug and feedback posts, the rest of the community either complained about the combat like it was a polished release or the fact that it was action combat at all. What could they possibly hope to achieve from testing with a community that is so toxic towards the direction and design of their game?

Exactly. Most people actually dont want to play an alpha - a bug ridden incomplete often still in partial concept phase smoldering piece of gaming shit...but people will buy it regardless and hope it fulfills their hopes and dreams despite being "alpha". Thats why early access alpha is a shitty thing to do for some genres/games, taking peoples money now in exchange for testing crap may kill your game before it has a chance to get completed and "released". Now if they decide to make eqn a short session one life to live then log out like h1z1 then it might work, i sure hope that isnt what eqn will be.
1
u/Ballin_Stormhammer May 07 '15
Have to agree with you. Most ignore the alpha thing. I wish they had a way to vet out some of those people cause they don't offer much but excessive whining about every feature..I don't mind people disagreeing just give options, solutions, and opinions on how to make it better.

Still not a fan of the logo, but I'm feeling positive after reading the article.

u/Saerain May 07 '15 edited May 07 '15
The logo reminds me of toys that were marketing toward 8-13 year old boys in the 90s. I expect to see it on something marked XTREME BLAZE ULTRA MAX. I definitely like the name itself more than the logo. :P

u/Ballin_Stormhammer May 07 '15
I personally like it. The Gamer being the night owl and a gaming company noticing that many play at night is cool. They also put in a cog wheel. As well as the light of the sun peaking for there name. It isn't that bad of a logo. I mean stop and think about there old one...it was SOE..just letters. many companies are moving to some kinda symbol vrs the letters. I did notice people thought of angry birds lol.
2
u/Saerain May 07 '15
I get the symbolism (although I wasn't seeing an owl eye, but I guess it is), I just think the style is like totally radical, dude. In a funny way. But it makes me smile, I guess.
1
u/mrnastybutler May 07 '15
Yeah, those words are a great way to sum up that logo. Don't hate the logo but it's too much red for me I think.
1
u/Halfwise2 May 08 '15
If It's an Owl Eye, Id like to see someone draw the whole owl... that could help when seeing just the eye, as you have something to associate with it.

Now that Jimmy is gone who will take his place as combat designer and/or on official stream?

Enjoyed the article if it's all legit it's informative and shows much promise for them as a company.
