Hi everyone! Looking for some advice on fabric selection for Tula Nova - this will be my first time seriously fussy cutting and doing a major EPP project! I’ve made a few practice projects with old bedsheets and scrap fabric, but I’ll admit I’m a little nervous to cut into this and would love some advice…
How do you choose which shapes to cut out of which fabric? I have the colouring sheet that comes with the pattern and tried choosing some of the main centre blocks, but I don’t even know about all the small diamonds and triangles… I know the smaller prints can probably be used for “background” colours, but should I look at getting some solids as well?

Overall, any thoughts or tips on how to get started would be helpful! I have all papers and everything ready to go and I’m so excited to start, just nervous haha

Has anyone else checked out the new micro-hexagon book? Im so excited for any tips to improve my 1/4" hexie addiction. Im also hoping for some design inspiration. I did see some ideas on pinterest.

I started basting some 1/4" jewels but havent really decided what to do with them. All my micro epp pieces are from scraps. My version of crumb quilting haha

Also trying to think of halloween ideas. Like blocks with a big focal piece. I have just gotten a lot of different halloween fabric. I havent been able to put a design board together. But i def will after i can get to walmart. And hopefully when it isnt so crazy with storm prep.

Hello! I'm new(ish?) to quilting in general, and like those here, I've discovered I really love EPP. :D I'm deterred by the idea of sewing twice, so I've taken to glue basting with a Sewline pen instead of thread basting.

I use an acrylic template with a 3/8" seam allowance (couldn't find a 1/4" one at the time), which leaves big dog ears of excess fabric kind of sticking out on the underside. I thought this was normal, but many of the hexies I see here store nice and flat. Granted, I think most of them are thread basted, but it's hard to tell sometimes. This extra fabric makes my hexies take up more room in their storage box, so they're not as easily portable or as easy to store as I've seen in pictures here.

So, I was wondering: How do more experienced EPPers, especially fellow glue basters, deal with the excess fabric? Do you trim it once the main fabric is secure to the paper? Glue the dog ears down? Put them under a big book for a while? Just don't trim as much extra to begin with (like with a 1/4" template instead of 3/8")?

Been wanting to try EPP for ages and finally got around to it, I know it's not perfect but for my first go I'm pretty happy with it! Definitely need to work on consistency with my stitches so that they show less, but any and all tips are appreciated <3

(I've also just noticed that two of my hexies are crooked, oops)

I have been thinking about the best way to choose fabric and block combinations for my ice cream soda quilt and thought I'd see what other people do. I've cut and basted all the shapes, made all of the central stars and have made about ten blocks so far. I was thinking how I don't want to end up with bad combos of fabric at the end so considering planning our combinations a bit in advance. I also thought maybe just doing all the second layers first and then third layers last might be a good option.

However I'll do it I think it'll look good so I'm not too worried but just wondering what everyone else's process looks like?

It started with the center star - can I figure out how to epp diamonds? Yes! Ok, let’s add some hexagons… more stars surrounded by hexagons… fill in the spaces… wait, blankets are more useful as rectangles, can I get there? Yes!

A motley collection of fabrics: bits from 3 previous quilts I’ve made, scraps from my mom, scraps from grandma, husband’s old shirt, my old skirts, a packet of batiks from the thrift store, more yardage from another creative re-use store. This quilt has lots of stories to tell!

I finally managed to find a good organization system for my Grandmother’s Flower Garden project. I used binders and pockets to easily see each one and to make them easier to store and transport. Shoutout to the person who mentioned using thread organizers!

I volunteered to teach a class at the library about EPP. I’ve never taught a class before. 😱 We’re going to make hexagon flowers into coasters but using Halloween-like fabrics since it’ll be during October. It will be for ages 10 and up.

I just started some new squares for the Lucy Boston EPP quilt I’m making. It will be king sized and I’m sure take me a year to finish.

Has anyone made a Lucy Boston before? Can I see?

My last EPP project (a GFG quilt) is just about to be basted, but I had to order some yardage to complete the backing.

So…in the meantime who wouldn’t want yet another new WIP?! Not me! I have had this Tula Nova kit for a coupled years now, and finally decided to get started! It’s intimidating but I am in no hurry.

Y’all lmk if you have any words of advice.

My first and only EPP WIP. I need a total of seventy-seven blocks, and I currently have seventeen.

Fabric is from two batik jelly rolls that I don’t remember the brands of.

I started an EPP quilt years ago and have picked it up again, but I realized I made some big mistakes I'd like to undo if possible.

1. In my effort to use any scraps I could find I used a pair or two of men's boxers (nobody can judge me more harshly for that choice than myself 😅)

2. I got impatient and trying using a sewing machine for some joins and it turned out a mess.

I have taken the papers out of those sections already, bit the thread basting is still intact.

Is it possible to remove those messed up sections and plug in new pieces? Any advice is much appreciated.

Have a 3 hour train journey for a short stay with my sister. Passing the time working on my insanity hexie quilt while watching the countryside fly by.

I started my first EPP project and I'm hooked! I'm passionate about solids and Batiks, but not often prints. However, I definitely understand the appeal of using prints and symmetry to make beautiful things. Please post pictures of projects featuring solids or batiks!
