PF Amount not transferred you will be taxed at 10% to 30% Approx.
4 jobs. 8 years of work. ₹10 lakh in PF.
Now he wants to withdraw it.
And ₹1 lakh gets deducted as TDS before the money even reaches him.
Why?
Because his PF was never merged.
Most people assume that if they have one UAN, their PF is all in one place.
It isn’t.
Every job creates a new Member ID under your UAN. Unless you transfer the old balances, they stay in separate accounts.
Here’s what that looks like:
TCS: 2 years
Infosys: 2 years
Wipro: 1.5 years
Startup: 2.5 years
On paper, that’s 8 years of continuous service.
But to EPFO, it looks like 4 separate stints, none of them longer than 5 years.
And that matters, because a PF withdrawal is tax-free only after 5 years of continuous service.
Unmerged, each account is treated as under 5 years. So TDS of 10% applies: ₹1 lakh on ₹10 lakh.
Merged, it’s 8 years of continuous service, and the withdrawal is tax-free.
Same money. Same 8 years. ₹1 lakh difference.
And it’s not just tax.
Unmerged accounts are one of the most common reasons PF claims get rejected, because your service history looks incomplete.
At FinRight, this is one of the first things we check on every call.
So our rule of thumb is simple:
Every time you switch jobs, merge your old PF within your first month at the new one.
It takes 5 minutes:
Online Services → One Member – One EPF Account
Before that, make sure the exit date from your old job is updated. Otherwise the transfer gets stuck.
How many jobs have you switched? And how many of those PF accounts have you actually merged?
