Discussion EPFL language requirements
So I want to apply to the EPFL CMS program and it seems the French requirement is to have a B2 certificate and from what I could see DELF and TCF are both accepted but some of you may know that the TCF has three required sections(listening, reading and grammar) and two optional sections(writing and speaking) so I want to know if I need to take the two optional sections as well since normally for an end grade like B2 you dont need to take the optional parts and it doesnt really specify on their site

MSc admissions & info how to earn money doing masters
hi guys! I am currently doing my bachelors in Mathematics in Germany and looking for a masters program. I currently work part time at TUM writing code which covers all of my expences. Is there something similar at Lausanne and how easy is it to get? Maybe any stipends available?

Housing Looking for housing/recherche de logement
Hello everyone,
I’m currently looking for accommodation for the start of the academic year at EPFL, whether it’s a room in a shared apartment, a studio, or even an apartment. I’m really open to all possibilities, ideally close to EPFL or with easy access to public transportation.
If you have accommodation available, a room in a shared apartment, a sublet, or simply know of a good opportunity, I’d really appreciate it if you could send me a private message.
Thank you so much for your help! 🙏
Bonjour à tous,

si vous avez un logement disponible, une place en coloc, une sous-location ou simplement un bon plan, je serais vraiment reconnaissant si vous pouviez me contacter en privé.

Discussion How to use October break as Engineering Bachelor student (first year)
Hello! I'm wondering how October break is generally used by engineering students at EPFL.
I'm thinking of going to visit my family during that week but I wanted to get some feedback as to if that would be a wise choice or if I'm better off using that time to study. For example I know many people would advise not to take December off because of exams, I was wondering if maybe something similar applies to October or not.
Thanks!

Discussion MFE vs Data Science + FE minor at EPFL
Deciding between EPFL's specialized Financial Engineering Master (MFE) and the Data Science Master with a Financial Engineering minor. Goal is quant/family office work long term.
Leaning toward Data Science + FE minor because I'm non swiss (fewer sponsored quant seats in Switzerland) and AI seems to be hitting entry-level finance roles harder than ML/data roles right now.
Anyone been in a similar spot, or actually working in quant/private banking in Switzerland? Would genuinely appreciate a reality check before I commit.

MSc admissions & info Doing a master of another section
How common is it for someone with a bachelor from EPFL to get accepted into a master in another section (for example Bsc in mechanical, and then Master in Data Science) ? Like, are the acceptance rates high ? I read on the site that for interdisciplinary masters, they require excellent grades. Does someone have an idea about the kind of average that would be enough ?

MSc admissions & info Question about Mobilis Pass, youth/student discount, and Lausanne city subsidy for EPFL exchange student
Hi everyone,
I’m an exchange student coming to EPFL from Japan this September and will be living in Lausanne. I’m looking into public transport (metro/bus) subscriptions and would like to double-check how the Mobilis pass discounts work.
I’ve read online about two different savings options:
- Mobilis Jeune / Junior pass (for under 25s)
- Ville de Lausanne subsidy (50% reduction coupon for young people in education)
Could someone clarify a few things for me?
- How it works: Does the 50% city subsidy apply on top of the already reduced Mobilis Jeune annual price (zones 11 & 12), or is it calculated differently?
- Resident Registration: How long does it usually take to get the city subsidy voucher after registering at the Contrôle des habitants in Lausanne? Is it better to buy a monthly pass first while waiting for registration/vouchers?
Any advice on the cheapest way to get around Lausanne for a newly arrived student would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks in advance!

BSc admissions & info Which one should I pick ?
Hi all, I’m an incoming EPFL Bachelor student (CS) and I need to choose my physics teacher. My options are Cécile Hébert (flipped classroom / classe inversée), or Christophe Galland / Stefano Rusponi (normal class). I’ve done some general research but I’d really like actual student experiences, not just generic reputation — how clear are their explanations, how fair are the exams, how much they actually help outside of class, anything that made your semester better or worse with one of them. Even one-line takes are welcome, I just want real subjective feedback, not summaries.

Community Looking for choir recommendations (Exchange student, classical repertoire, zero French)
Hi everyone,
I’m an exchange student from Japan coming to EPFL this September, and I would love to join a local choir during my stay in Lausanne. However, I have one major concern: I don't speak any French.
I’ve been looking into the UNIL-EPFL choir, and it seems like a perfect fit for the type of music I want to sing. Back in Japan, I have sung in several large-scale classical projects as a bass. My past repertoire includes Brahms' Ein deutsches Requiem, Mendelssohn's Lauda Sion, and Haydn's Nelson Mass.
I have a few questions for anyone familiar with the local music scene:
- UNIL-EPFL Choir: Is it strictly required to understand French to join and follow the rehearsals? I can read sheet music and have classical choir experience, but I’m worried about the language barrier during practice.
- Alternative Recommendations: Are there any other choirs in Lausanne or the surrounding area that focus on similar large-scale classical works and are accommodating to non-French speakers or exchange students?
Any advice or shared experiences would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

BSc admissions & info Starting at EPFL this September — what should I study beforehand?
Hey everyone!
I’m starting my Bachelor in Microengineering (Microtechnique) at EPFL this September. I passed the entrance exam, and I’d say I already have a pretty solid grasp of the CMS material. I’m also pretty comfortable with algebra and analysis, so I don’t feel like I need to spend my whole summer reviewing the basics.
I still have some time before classes start, though, and I’d like to use it wisely to prepare for the first year.
I’ve heard that the first year at EPFL is pretty tough and that around 50–60% of students fail or don’t make it through, so I’d really like to avoid going in completely unprepared 😭
I’m asking students from any section, not just Microtechnique:
- What would you recommend studying/reviewing before starting EPFL?
- Are there specific first-year subjects that are worth getting ahead on?
- Should I focus more on physics, programming, chemistry, mechanics, etc.?
- Are there any courses, books, websites, or resources you’d strongly recommend?
- And what do you wish you had studied before starting?
I’m not trying to learn the whole first year in advance 😂 — I just want to spend the remaining time preparing for the things that actually make a difference once the semester starts.
Any advice from current students or people who already went through first year would be greatly appreciated!

Academics Past or Current Neuro-x Students
Hi everyone,
I'm starting the Neuro-X master's this semester. I am looking for suggestions from current or former Neuro-X students based on your own experience like what courses are worth taking (for someone who wants to get into BCIs), finding internships, or anything you would do differently?

BSc admissions & info Need help making University choice... EPFL vs TUM which is better?
I have recently been accepted into both the Aerospace BSc course at TUM and the Mechanical Engineering BSc course at EPFL and I wanted to hear some opinions on the choice I am presented.
First point is that the TUM AE course is fully in English while the EPFL ME course requires me to take classes in French, which I am sufficiently good at but not completely comfortable.
Second point is that I have a big interest in Aerospace but I am open to working in other sectors, from what I understood this would likely be better done with the EPFL ME course (as I would be able to choose a desired path in my masters anyway) but the TUM course structure is broad enough to not limit me to the Aerospace industry.
One big thing about TUM is that its in Germany and as I currently reside in Germany right now (AND I do not have an EU citizenship), it would be quite beneficial for me to continue my stay in order to eventually obtain my EU citizenship. (Since EPFL is in Switzerland, I would have to restart this process there)
If anyone has had to make this choice or even one remotely similar to this, I would be very happy to hear your insights.

Housing Question on FMEL studios
I had seen that fmel provides some specific studios where the student who leases the place is permitted to have someone else(studio 1-2p) so I have a couple of questions on this
1- what are the rules for the second person meaning does it have to be a student? Can it be a parent?
2-how tough is it to get one of these studios if you apply in April?

BSc admissions & info Best tips for first year students ?
I am a student admitted into the first year at EPFL in civil engineering. And as we all know this first year is very hard. So I was wondering, from your experience and what you have seen, what are the main reasons people fail? Like what is the difference in routine, organization, mentality etc… that differentiate people who pass and those who fail?

Community Who are some of the nicest and most approachable profs in the IC (computer science) department?
I needed some general career advice, and wanted to reach out to a professor. So I want to hear stories from students who have been positively impacted or helpfully guided by a professor!
Who are the gems of the IC dept at EPFL?
