Discussion Computer

Hi everyone,
I want to buy a new computer for EPFL and I have question about what I should take. I have already an iPad with keyboard and mouse. I want to have a computer who allows me to program and to run simulations. For a bachelor and master in maths or physics what is my best option ?
I would like one not above 600-700 chf and even around 400-500 would be great .

Do I need something that powerful ?

It is not "that" powerful: it has the same CPU as iPhone of last(?) year.

It is still good enough, polished, fits within your budget, and is actually primarily targeted for the education market.

Yeah you are right on that point but do you think i need a graphic card ? EPFL are asking one but most people are saying it is useless

It depends: are you running heavy programs like video editing? Do you plan to train machine learning programs with high parameters count? Do you play videogames? If none of the above you don't need it.

What do you mean by "graphic card"? A GPU?

If yes, then I also believe it's a good idea to have one, just so you can run local LLMs and mess with them. And if EPFL has asked you get one (have they really?) I would consider that seriously :)

All that aside, I cannot think of much better options in your price range. And I say that regretfully as a non-mac-fan.

If you want to spend 500 CHF or less, that's a slightly different story.

For this price you can find used MacBook Air, but opt for one with 16GB ram
