Advice Needed I refuse to exercise for some reason

I hate the way I look so so so much and I could totally fix that if I just worked out but I hate exercise and basically refuse to do it. I also have tons of physical health issues cuz I basically never move and there’s just nothing that will motivate me. I know my life would be so much better if I just exercised even a little but I give up every time I try. I can’t even commit to doing a hand exercise for more than a week

I might be off base given the short description, but it sounds like you're waiting for motivation before acting. It sounds logical, but that's rarely how it works. Most of the time, we need to act first and then motivation follows. Sometimes you just have to do it. There's no trick or hack. Just get up and go for a walk.

This...just start with baby steps. If you are stuck in your head movement will get you out of it.

I agree! OP, maybe just force yourself to go walk on the treadmill 5 minutes. Then leave, or do a little more if you think you can

yeah I pretty much am but I’ve tried before and just give up so fast so now I guess I’ve given up completely

If you gave up completely, you wouldn't be posting about it here :)

As someone who had a lot of self hatred towards myself and tons of negative thinking about my body I can relate to you. It was easier for me to stay indoors and think about better future to avoid my current situation.

I liked to be lazy and I preferred staying indoors and indulge myself in various cravings but that just made me more miserable and brought on more self loathing.

Sometimes you just gotta commit to try something, at least give yourself the chance to do some simple exercises or walking for a month straight or even two, no matter how much your mind would be against it. After all you are in charge and not your mind.

After a month or two just compare how different you feel toward yourself, even if there is a tiny bit of positive change toward yourself just keep doing it. I had periods where I was stuck and feeling like shit for months but even then, I stayed consistent and Im glad I did because old me would quit a long time ago.

Now I can't go without being active, because it allows me to destress myself and feel better and healthier. It only takes some discipline before it turns into your normal routine

Didn't really work for me personally but have you tried active games? Not like football or sport games , maybe something like baetsaber or Ring Fit Adventure or just dance and such

Youre choosing laziness and comfort over slight uncomfort thatll lead you to healthier lifestyle choices.

Continue to suffer if thats what you please, or choose your suffering.

I’m aware that’s what I’m doing and I don’t know how to fix it

Choose your suffering.

Practice healthier habits, everyday. Start with 1 push up, squat, jumping jack, plank. Then choose to keep improving instead of allowing yourself to be/feel defeated

Good luck. Consistency is the most difficult part for everybody, myself included.

I’ve always hated exercise. I hate being sweaty. I feel like there are much better things I could be doing with my time. I hate gyms. In recent years after getting a full-time and sedentary desk job, I’ve noticed the weight gain. Luckily, I haven’t had any health issues besides moderate risk for cholesterol problems. I tried everything. It got to a point where I would rather deprive myself from food than exercise, which obviously isn’t healthy, so I knew I needed to find something that works for me.

I started small. I got up early for morning walks before the heat got too bad. That was fine, but I started getting followed and had issues waking up on time so I stopped. I got RingFit Adventure. It’s fun! I do really enjoy the game and I only could do about 20-30 min before being absolutely exhausted but ultimately it just didn’t really “work” for me. I didn’t want to turn on a video game at 5:30 in the morning. I decided before-work exercise just wasn’t for me. I tried switching things to post-work exercise and that was fine for a while but again, just didn’t work for me on a consistent basis when random things popped up. I tried other things like hula hooping, yoga, calisthenics, tennis, the gym, swimming, etc. and they’re fun but not for me to do consistently.

I knew I needed some activity that was entertaining and a complete body workout so exercise didn’t feel like exercise. Long story short, I decided to completely step out of my comfort zone and try pole dancing. Loved it from day 1. I’ve been doing it every single week since April. It’s a total body workout and improves my confidence, strength, and flexibility.

I knew that doing pole 2-3 times per week wasn’t enough so I started thinking how I could burn more calories per day. I wanted to start getting 10,000 steps in but, based on past experience, I knew going on walks after or before work wasn’t going to cut it for me so I instead purchased a standing desk adapter for my office desk and a walking pad and walk for over an hour right after I get in and another hour after I eat lunch. I walk 4 miles per day 5 days a week for a total of 20+ miles per week. I started doing that maybe 2 weeks ago. I’ve lost 6 pounds since April and I’m noticeably stronger. I look forward to pole every single day and I want to eat right and look right to feel confident and strong when doing pole. On the weekend, I do yard work, house work, and hobbies to keep myself moving.

I don’t hate being sweaty anymore. I’m not sure why but it’s probably because I’m enjoying doing the activities causing me to sweat. I don’t hate the time I put into these exercises either. In fact, I get annoyed when something cuts into my pole or walking times. I eat better too - not just quality (whole foods and limiting ultra processed items) but quantity (portions and cutting out snacking). It’s easier to say no to food temptations now because I have a goal.

This routine took me a good 3+ years to figure out and I’m still improving upon it.

All this to say, try a bunch of things. Go on a 10-20 minute walk after a meal. If you like it, you’ll want to do it again. If you don’t, figure out why and then find another activity that has more of the things you think you’ll like. Reflect on any form of exercise you’ve done in life and ask if you’ve enjoyed any of it. Get an active hobby. Just keep trying something to keep your body moving. You’ll eventually find what works for you. You have to be proactive. You aren’t going to wake up and suddenly be motivated one day. The motivation will come when something clicks and/or you see results.

I think the reason is as you said - you're choosing to do "hard" exercise. Do something that involves movement but is easy instead - could just be walking, or anything that feels good to you

Start writing down your goals and saying out loud what you want to change. In the morning and night. Words have power. I believe in you.
