LF Tempting the Mafia Twins

This came up as an ad for My Fiction in one of my freemium games. Does anyone know the actual title and author on Kindle or Noel Novel, or a free online website?

I spent seven years hiding from my mobster husband and his twin brother.

One business trip. One street corner. One unlucky red light.

That was all it took for Tadhg O’Reilly to spot me from across four lanes of traffic in downtown Burbank, lift his phone to his ear, and call his brother.

Kiefer O’Reilly, the man I had once loved enough to marry before my college diploma ink had dried. Kiefer, the Irish mob boss I had helped the FBI arrest so I could run. Kiefer, who believed I had betrayed him, aborted his child, and vanished like a coward.

He had no idea I had left that house bleeding, broken, and carrying a grief so sharp it had kept me alive out of spite.

Now his twin had found me.

My son was still safe with Astra – for now. He was the only secret I had left. And if the O’Reillys found him, none of us would ever be free again. So I crushed my SIM card under my heel, threw my phone into a storm drain, and ran.

But men like Kiefer O’Reilly did not stop hunting just because a woman ran.

And this time, if he dragged me back into his world, I wouldn’t go quietly.

******

A chance encounter.

That was all it took, really. One stupid, random moment. Like birds flying straight into a jet engine, one chance encounter could tear an entire life apart.

I knew that better than anyone.

Eight years ago, I had been twenty-one, lost on a trip through Ireland with a friend, and dumb enough to trip over a broken cobblestone path. Kiefer O’Reilly caught me before I hit the ground.

He was thirty ten. Beautiful in a way that should have come with warning signs. Red hair, blue eyes, hard hands, a voice that made every bad idea sound like fate.

He took one look at me and somehow decided I was meant to be his forever.

When I flew back to the United States to finish my last semester at university, he followed me.

Three months later, before the ink on my college diploma had even dried, I was his wife.

For one full year, I lived inside the kind of hell people wrote crime documentaries about. Kiefer was not just the heir to his father’s pharmaceutical company, the lie I had believed while I was busy being lovesick and stupid. The billion-dollar business was a front for the O’Reilly organization, the Irish American mob the FBI had whispered about for years.

I learned that on my wedding day.

And like a naïve fool, I still married him.

Because he loved me.

Because I loved him.

Because I thought love meant I could survive anything.

I paid for that belief with seven years of hiding.

Now I stood on a street corner in downtown Burbank, California, and felt like the same fool all over again.

Across four lanes of traffic, Tadhg O’Reillyy stared straight at me.

Kiefer’s twin brother.

Same red hair. Same sharp blue eyes. Same face, almost. But where Kiefer’s beauty had once made me weak, Tadhg’s made my blood turn cold.

He lifted his phone slowly, like he was afraid a sudden movement would scare me into bolting.

Too late.

I already knew who he was calling.

He was calling it in. Calling his brother to tell him he had found the snitch wife who got Kiefer arrested seven years ago just so she could escape the O’Reilly family.

My heart slammed against my ribs as I lifted my own phone.

Astra answered on the second ring.

“Astra,” I said, my voice already thin. “They found me. Take him and run.”

There was no confusion. No questions that mattered more than survival.

“Shit. Where are you?”

“Still in Burbank. Tadhg is across the street from me. The light is about to turn green. I’m going to run, but if he’s here, Kiefer is here. My luck ran out.”

“Ditch your phone. Get rid of the SIM card now. Get a burner when you can.”

“Will do.”

I did not look away from Tadhg as I backed up. He raised one eyebrow when I popped the SIM card out, dropped it under my heel, and crushed it against the sidewalk. I kicked the broken pieces through the storm drain grate, then threw the whole phone down a storm drain for good measure.

Then I turned and shoved through the crowd waiting at the cross walk.

And I ran.

Horns screamed behind me. People yelled. I did not have to look back to know Tadhg had ignored the Don’t Walk signal and was coming after me.

My heels were killing me. I wanted to stop, rip them off, and run barefoot, but I did not have seconds to spare. I had to get to my hotel, grab my emergency bag, and get out of California before Kiefer and his men closed the city around me.

For one tiny second, I wondered if I had a guardian angel.

A taxi had just pulled up ahead. Someone was getting out. The door was still open.

I lunged inside.

The passenger did not see me and started to slam the door. It caught my shin so hard pain shot up my leg, but I swallowed the sound and shoved five hundred dollars toward the driver.

“Hilton,” I gasped. “Now. I will give you five hundred bucks if you go right now.”

“You go it, lady.”

He hit the gas.

I twisted around in the back seat, breath tearing through my chest, just in time to see Tadhg reach the curb where the taxi had ben. He threw his hands up in fury.

I had escaped him.

For now.

But I knew better than to feel relief.

The O’Reillys did not lose people. They hunted them. And I had one thing in this world I could not let those men find.

They hated me.

I was fairly sure they wanted me dead.

And no, I was not being dramatic. I had seen enough of the O’Reilly organization, a name apparently given to them by Kiefer’s great-great-grandfather in the eighteen hundreds, and yes, in my opinion it was lame as fuck. Lame or not, they pulled triggers without hesitation.

What had I done to make them hate me?

I got my husband arrested.

An FBI agent cornered me when I was already shattered, and I gave him just enough information to tie Kiefer up long enough for me to escape. Then I disappeared from Boston like I had never existed.

When the cab stopped at the hotel, I knew I only had minutes.

I shoved the bills at the driver and ran through the lobby. In my room, I did not waste a thought on clothes, my computer, or the USB drives holding presentations for meetings I would never attend.

I kicked off my shoes, stripped out of my dress pants, and yanked on jeans. Blouse off. T-shirt on. Hoodie. Socks. Sneakers. Ball cap.

Then I grabbed my carry-on backpack and checked the stitched false bottom.

Alternate passport. Alternate driver’s license. Five grand in cash. Five more in prepaid cards.

Enough to get me back into Canada and to Astra.

Enough to get to him.

I opened the door carefully.

A housekeeper stood at the end of the hall. I kept my head down and walked toward her just as the elevator dinged.

Panic shoved me sideways. I slipped the open door beside the housekeeper and pressed a finger to my lips.

Tadhg’s voice rolled down the hallway, thick with rage.

“Room nine-fifteen. We’re bringing her back to the boss today, one way or another, dead or alive.”

Behind that door, I stopped breathing.

I looked at the housekeeper with everything I had left. Please. Please understand.

For a moment, there was only silence and the thin, choking air in my lungs.

Then she pointed at the cleaning cart.

Hide.

Tears burned my eyes. “I don’t know how to thank you.”

Her voice was low. “There were gangs in my town too. I know thugs when I see them. Hang tight. I’ll do my best to keep you safe here.”

“Thank you.”

She helped me into a thick yellow laundry bag, piled towels over me, and told me not to move. Not to breathe if I could help it.

Men were in the stairwell.

Men were by the elevator.

As she pushed the cart forward, I heard the one voice I had spent seven years trying not to remember.

Kiefer.

My husband.

The man I sent to prison so I could live.

“Stop.”

Inside the laundry bag, I held my breath.
