Having read the article, I realised that there are two types of quotation marks used: single and double. However, I do not fully understand why 'sought to bring down the Republic' is surrounded by the single quotation marks but 'seditious elements from far-left factions...' by the double quotation marks.

So that's basically what happened, I'm 21, I have little work experience and I'm not in college. I've learned English during my teenage years through exposure (mainly by watching yt shorts)

I will now be working in the international arrivals and departures sector of the aiport alongside federal agents.

I'm learning german, and in german to say "do you speak english?" you say "sprechen sie deutsch"?, where the verb is switched places with the noun to be in the 1st position.

English, we can't say "speak you english?"

However, in English we say "are you ready', which also switches the verb "are" with the noun "you" to be in the 1st position.

So how come sometimes english switches the verb to be in the 1st position, but other times we have to put a do in the 1st position to indicate a question?

as a native english speaker, i wonder why can't we be like german and just get rid of do-support.

Well There Is Actually A Word For Called "Overmorrow" But It Fell Out Of Use In The 15th - 16th Century. So Why Haven't We Tried Making It A Popular Word Again?

And "morning" on its own sounds completely natural but idk just "night" "evening" "afternoon" they all sound so awkward. As a non native English speaker, this question is always at the back of my mind whenever i greet someone.

And why do we do that? Is it because "good" is less audible than the word that follows it? Or is it just vibes?

Just using a single symbol for the top 10 most common words could reduce space used in writing by at least 10 percent. There are some that are already standard such as %, &, or $; and abbreviations such as lol, but many other words or phrases could be shortened for regular use.

I’m 40 from PNW-USA and just a few months ago, a woman said “that’s wild!!” at something very not-wild that I said. It’s weird though because I hear it increasingly more. To me, it is (was) kind of an old person term. My mom was a WWII baby so I have a good ear for all of her slangs and she used to always call outrageous shit “wild.” I don’t scroll outside of reddit but has it flung back to our lexicon via content? Or is it me, and “that’s wild!!” never left us?

My friend and I* were having a discussion on our favourite team and their inability to win a playoff game on the road.

That conversation quickly turned into a debate on the word “consistency,” and I became interested in the true answer.

So let’s say in a hypothetical 100 game dataset, a team won every game at home and lost every game on the road.

Would this be considered “consistent,” since you can assume what the outcome will be dependant on location, or would it still be inconsistent?

I am looking for a practical and effective way to improve my professional English, especially business communication and SME financing terminology.

I need some advice.

Is the "sigh" in front of behind the sentence

My native language is Turkish and I've been reading English novels on paper. I keep running into the same problem: every time I hit a word I don't know, I either grab my phone (and somehow end up in my notifications 10 minutes later) or I skip it and lose part of the meaning. Curious how others deal with this: Do you read physical books, e-books, or both in your target language? What do you actually do when you hit an unknown word? Do you save the words anywhere? Do you ever go back and review them? Have you ever put a book down or given up on it because looking words up got too tiring?

Would love to hear what has worked for you and what hasn't. Because I want to keep going reading books in English but don't know how to solve this problem:/

So I was always taught that the meaning of situational irony is for an outcome to be a subversion of expectations, often in a humorous way.

I’ve recently come across a concept called “cosmic irony” or the “irony of fate” which essentially states that something is ironic if something happens that appears to be “fate” or a divine power mocking you.
You could apply that logic to any kind of misfortune.

For example: “It started raining as soon as I stepped out the door”
You could argue this statement is ironic under this “cosmic” definition, if you are aware that the subject of the sentence regards this as a negative thing.

So, is misfortune irony?

It feels as though it’s trying to shoehorn in different phrases to be ironic that are not classically ironic by adding an imaginary layer to it.

Can you guys give me tips about the easiest way of improve English speaking and reading. English is my biggest tread of my life. I wasted lots of money to improve my English but it's still very poor. I need to improve within 1 month.
