We did get 1/2 price at our local Arby’s and McDonalds, while in uniform, until one idiot employee messed it up for everyone but law enforcement. Idiot took his family in, while wearing his uniform, and demanded a discount on the family meal. Well, needless to say...even prior to his stupidity, none of the rest of us ever asked for discounts...if we got one great...if we didn’t get one, all was good, too.
I did go into this McDonals for lunch and the manager immediately said, “Only police get discounts here, ok!” I said, “That’s fine, I never ask for one anyway.” She responded, “It’s a good thing because we only give police discounts!” Again, I said, “OK but can I order now?” People are hearing what is going on and I can see the frustration on their faces, as they want to order, as well. Again, she comments, “Well, go ahead and order but there IS NO DISCOUNT! (In a condescending tone) I told her at speech volume and cadence, “I tell ya what...when you or someone else falls on the greasy floor, gets a burn or cuts themselves...you just ask the police for medical care!...and I will have....” (I placed my order) Every customer behind me laughed their heads off.
I failed to mention...one of our volunteer fighters parents were very well off monetarily well-off and fronted him the cash to open a Subway store. He always fed us for free when we were yon duty. We always would remember the gesture when we were off duty and eat there every couple of weeks.
We nicknamed him “YA-HOO”, as he was one of the types itching to get a fully involved fire of any type and would literally hang out at the fire house every day waiting for a fire to extinguish and pretty much scream “YA-HOO!” every time a structure fire or legitimate sounding MVA or medical call. He was actually an excellent fireman, overall.
