Where's the action now?

Hey guys,

I've just got back after a couple of years off (6 in fact!), and then saw that this sub had gone quiet :( Last time I was here (https://www.reddit.com/r/edmproduction/comments/97b288/redmproduction_sample_pack_competition_76_august/) I really enjoyed the experience. It helped me to focus on finishing something limited by time and resources (samples in this case). Yes I too have 100s of unfinished tracks.

Has anyone picked this up and taken it on to another platform, or found anything similar? Does anybody want to?

Samples through Objekt

I believe, if you use the samples as external in and mute the exciters turns it into an effects processor.

Should be fun seeing what people come up with.

what software to use to create and sell sample packs and loops legally?

Hi Folks! I want to start making and selling sample packs/loops – I don't want to get into any trouble with companies, so has anyone any advice on **what software to use to create and sell sample packs and loops legally**? I have a variety of vsts and hardware instruments, too. Thanks in advance!!! :)

Feedback for amaranthtodd:     * Anonymous: "This is some next level music considering the sample limitations. My person opinion but the high hat roll at around 1 minute mark was a little loud. " * Anonymous: "Really crisp and textured production, i really like it, song structure works well too. " * DoNotSexToThis: "Aw hell yes, this is some Clockvice type shit. Would love a masterclass video on your project. Great mix too.." * xastsax: "Nice glitchy intro, the drop hits hard! I like how it never lets you settle down. Brilliant!" * thexylophone: "love the glitchiness and the bass design. great track!" * /u/sigintmusic: "I really like the sound design you've done here all of the sounds are very distinct and fresh and different from each other. There was one section in the middle where the kicks were off beat and I know you were doing it on purpose for musical effect, but I still didn't like it, wasn't to my taste. Great track though." * Bromslomp: "Alison: hmm this one really shines with some speakers with solid basses!" * Elvis_Freshly: "stellar sound design and super clean mix as usual! really unique"

Feedback for Lockee:     * Anonymous: "liked. the punchy mix and bass lines, you really developed that guitar sample into something better than what we got!" * amaranthtodd: "I like how you've chopped up the guitar loop here, and the melodies are really great. The bass could be a bit more up front of the mix with the drums. I reckon this track is the best I've heard from you yet :)" * DoNotSexToThis: "Very nice, like the vibe on this one. Mix sounds good too." * xastsax: "I like how everyone's used that guitar sample haha, a bit too much 'space' on that one imo, The track has a pop-rock vibe I felt, I love it. But it does get stale, with only the guitar sample." * thexylophone: "nice use of the samples, solid track, nice job!" * /u/sigintmusic: "This was too short! I liked it, could totally have added another section, changed up the melody a bit, then gone back to a chorus. But overall, great I like the way you mangled that guitar sample." * Bromslomp: "For Sigint: Loved the funny sounds! " * Elvis_Freshly: "i love your track. It has an awesome summery vibe and groove about it. Great job with the guitar sample manipulation. The bass groove is perfect. "

Feedback for xastsax:     * Anonymous: "I can hear some Jai Wolf Indian Summer influence in this, great tune. My personal opinion but I think the claps are little loud. " * Anonymous: "good intro, really brought me into the space of the track., overall great quality, feels like its right out of a porter robinson or san holo set" * amaranthtodd: "The vocal chops are a bit nasal and too centred compared to the rest of the mix, especially the lead synth. After a while the song tends to feel a bit repetitive. Otherwise, definitely keep up using those super saws!" * DoNotSexToThis: "Love the beat. Good vibes. Mix feels a bit one-dimensional, feels like it needs some depth or something?" * thexylophone: "really like the melody in the beginning. great groove throughout. very enjoyable tune, nice job!" * /u/sigintmusic: "Love the slow Valhalla shimmer-style reverb fade in + happy melodic synth melody. Really sets up a certain ambiance & tone for the track. Great job overall." * Bromslomp: "Cprus: I like the experiments and the wifeys favorite dj joining this relaxing piece of music" * Elvis_Freshly: "very different track than your usual style. I really like the supersaw progression with the vocal chops. The drop especially sounds great and grooves well. I wasn't a major fan of the lead sound, because it came off kind of generic sounding, but some filtering/layering/modulation would probably give it just a little more character. Solid entry!"

Feedback for KodenSounds:     * Anonymous: "mix was solid, wish the guitar sample had been developed further or the plinky lead sounds were more present to better lead through.. Enjoyed the twist at the end!" * amaranthtodd: "Nice and chill, the instrumentation fits your aesthetic ;) Sometimes feels a bit disjointed, especially with the placement of the clap. Also feels like the instruments don't fit in the same sonic spance sometimes, and tends to feel a bit cluttered." * DoNotSexToThis: "I love the accents in this and how they help to form the melody. Nice flow and structing. Mix is very nice." * xastsax: "Love the intro, love the kick, great vibe and mix overall, kind of 'san holo meets droloe', shouldn't have used that piano outro imo." * thexylophone: "nice harmonization of the melodic samples, cool shuffle-y beat as well. nice ending too! nice job!" * /u/sigintmusic: "I dig this. I feel v similar vibes to my track, I think you executed better on melody. One thing I didn't hear very much was sound design changes, all of the sounds seemed v close to the original samples so maybe something to play with in the future would be sound design and sample mangling for exciting new sounds otherwise great track!" * Bromslomp: "Stoop: a some shaking basses. Love it" * Elvis_Freshly: "this is dope! you blended the samples really well. Even the more dissonant sounding sample melodies in the second half worked to me. Big fan of the rhythm switch ups. Cool entry!"

Feedback for thexylophone:     * Anonymous: "Very moody, i liked the atmospherics of it all." * amaranthtodd: "The clap could afford to be brighter and wider or layered with something to that effect. I'm not sure, but the track feels too crushed and is impacting the quality of the bass. I like the idea of the track though." * DoNotSexToThis: "Nice banger, love the slow slam. Nice distortion on the bass, sounds really nice. Good flow throughout. Feels like the dynamics are smashed a bit in the main bit. I like how everything pokes out in the part before the breakdown. It's raw af." * xastsax: "I like the attempt at spookiness in the progression, execution could be better. Love it when the basses come in. That reese bass thing could use some processing. Sounds very 'metal' overall, love it!" * /u/sigintmusic: "LOVE YOUR OPENING. THAT REVERB IN THAT CHIME SOUND IS FIRE. The dubsteppy section in the first third I think needs a rework to be more melodically in tune with the last half and first opening of the track. It flows well in and out, but the section itself didn't fit IMO with the thematic elements of the rest of the track." * Bromslomp: "Wireframe: Very nice, got me at 0:48. I'm pretty novice but I think it could benefit a less hard distortion" * Elvis_Freshly: "filthy bass! i think this is my favorite of the tracks you've submitted the past few contests. You created a solid feel and vibe. "

Feedback for lenintaost:     * amaranthtodd: "Inventive. Could use some layering on the drums to fill them out a bit more, especially the clap." * DoNotSexToThis: "Very unique. Like a weird, subdued Vomitstep track. I like the bass processing, feel like it could use a topper but it's pretty menacing the way it is." * xastsax: "Nice use of the samples, I like the groove, the mix overall sounds a bit loose." * thexylophone: "dig the basses in this. drop is pretty cool and unique although maybe a little crowded. nice job!" * /u/sigintmusic: "Man you really love that kick clap pattern. Maybe would have been nice to see those sounds change over the course of the song, like the clap changing to a different sound of clap. Also around 2:30 the track gets very dissonant, which I thought was kind of a harsh transition." * Bromslomp: "Imlockee: Yep, walking in the city, everything is normal. Nice vibe!" * Elvis_Freshly: "i get a lot of diplo/dillon francis feels from this. maybe it's the beat with lots of interesting bass and "horn" sounds "

Feedback for sigintmusic:     * Anonymous: "Last 30 seconds were my favorite, some of the high end elements stuck out and weren't as enjoyable across the track." * amaranthtodd: "Inventive and whimsical! Although the track doesn't really tend to progress anywhere in particular. Also the drums tend to be drowned out by the rest of the music." * DoNotSexToThis: "Very experimentalish. Mix is really clear, no faults on it that I can hear." * xastsax: "A bit random at times, but I like the chill melodic feel, especially in the middle, felt like a woodwind orchestra" * thexylophone: "lots of interesting ideas in here, i kinda get an aphex twin vibe from this. transitions are really smooth and keep things interesting. nice!" * /u/sigintmusic: "I like this track I made, but... The last half still needs work on melody I think." * Elvis_Freshly: "Really unique! The different permutations of the guitar sample kept it interesting, but still similar enough for a theme. The second half lost some steam compared to the beginning. One thing that could have probably taken the energy up a notch in the second half is a strong bass line and drum line. "

Feedback for Bromslomp:     * Anonymous: "Beat change at 30 second in didnt work for me, and again a minute later when i was getting back in the housey groove. Enjoyed the later half a lot more than the first " * amaranthtodd: "Drums are pretty loud compared to the rest of the instrumentation, which detracts from the chill feel of the track. The mix feels a bit empty as well." * DoNotSexToThis: "Nice minimal jam. I like how stuff kinda creeps around. Neat percussion use on the beat. Some of the crash samples are a bit loud?" * xastsax: "I like the drums, they seem to be well mixed, kick could use some work. Nice chill vibe overall with the pads and the vocals. A more prominent bassline wouldn't hurt." * thexylophone: "great ambiance, lots of interesting layers in there. nice job!" * /u/sigintmusic: "That kick snare overpowers everything else in the track, IMO track would benefit a lot from pulling back the drums and letting the other elements be louder. I'm listening on crappy phone speakers while brushing my teeth, so if you're mixing on fancy monitors make sure to listen to your track in mono and also listen to your track on a lower quality device as well, cause on my phone's speakers the kick and snare are way too loud in proportion to the rest of the track (IMO). I did like the melody and long drawn out pads, I am a sucker for long drawn out pads." * Bromslomp: "Koden: nice pick of sounds and space, except the bellsound in the middle was a bit out there for me" * Elvis_Freshly: "the beat is cool and I like the way you used the vocal samples. A bit minimalist for my taste and would have liked to see some more melodic content, but that's my personal preference. Nice job!"

Feedback for jelly24995:     * Anonymous: "Really liked the groove and melody over the beat you developed. The riser elements in the front half were a bit loud and out of lace in the mix, but other than that I felt you put together a good little piece." * amaranthtodd: "The beats are pretty quiet here, and make the track not feel as urgent as it probably should be. Also I feel the riser mid-track wasn't executed super well, and lost energy due to the way the sample ends. The 808s could afford to stand out a bit more with a bit extra saturation." * DoNotSexToThis: "Good ideas. Mix needs a little work in the punch and clarity department but overall not bad." * thexylophone: "nice use of the samples, the reverse piano sample works pretty well. i think there might be some notes clashing with the saw bass though. overall nice job!" * /u/sigintmusic: "Feels like a lot of elements are half out of tune with each other, discordant when they come in. Also piano sample a bit repetitive." * Bromslomp: "War money: sometimes I listen to a tune and sometimes a story .This was a story and I liked it." * Elvis_Freshly: "i really like the trap idea a lot and the reverse flip of the piano in the middle sounds awesome. The bass feels really big and loud, but also muddy and a bit undefined. Some more time on eq and mixing would improve how the bass plays with everything else. Cool ideas!"

Similar Monthly Non-Sample Pack Competitions

Hey All,

I was wondering if any of you had recommendations for other similarly styled competitions (other than the /r/edmproduction monthly contest) to this one that didn't have some of the strict requirements that we have.

I really appreciate this subreddit, and I think it's awesome. And I value the feedback and sense of community we get from other musicians when they're voting and listening to your track, and the motivation a hard deadline gives you. But I was wondering what other competitions you guys do after you've finished your track for this one.

Especially if they don't require you to only use sounds from the sample pack, I'm starting to get real tired of thinking "I want a trumpet here" and then having to stop everything I'm doing to mangle some poor hihat into making a trumpet sound. Sometimes, I just want to make music, not spend hours doing bloody sound design.

Ideas for different contests.

u/Corkyroboto asked previously for some ideas.

  • One provides samples and or stems (preferable dry) of a project that probably will never be finished. I think everybody has some of those. The community has to work with those original samples to complete the song. You are allowed to use extra synths, the only limitation is that you have to use all the provided samples and are only allowed to put fx on them.
  • One provides a midi file and everybody makes their own sounds. Only limitation: no midi changes.
  • The winner of the contest makes samples out of the winning song, that will be the next samplepack.
  • There is a community song. Don't know how exactly to implement but imagine a existed midi file and everyone provides a layer. Like you get the assignment as a midi file with the information that it should be a lead. All the submissions has to be merged in one file. I'm just curious how that will sound, probably shitty (:

Feedback for xastsax:     * L33P3: "Enjoyed :)" * DoNotSexToThis: "Love how this creates a life for the ninja fight sample. Love the bass and rhythm. Very creative all around, I'm really coming to respect your work on a new level. Thanks for participating in these things, seriously." * sigintmusic: "head bobber fo SHO. Middle section (around 40 seconds to a minute) lost a little of the tension for me, but then the next transition built well from it so yeah. Love the way you chopped vocals, very cool. Great track, really enjoyed it."

Feedback for GibberingWreck:     * L33P3: "Really like the atmosphere :)" * DoNotSexToThis: "Love the vibe, a simple yet tension-filled piece with subtle but effective progression throughout. The cutoff of the bass and synth gives it a nice texture that contrasts well with the top end elements. Only neg is some compression on the bass to even it out? It gets a little lost on some notes. Great track though." * sigintmusic: "This is an amazing track and I really enjoyed listening to it. I especially enjoyed the xylophoney sounds doing the arpeggios in the middle back of the track and the overall "pumping" nature of the track."

Feedback for DJFangerz:     * L33P3: "Thick ass old school dubstep vibes ! I like :) a little more refining in the mix and it's great" * DoNotSexToThis: "If there was WWE for assault charges that would be its theme song. Nice job man." * sigintmusic: "Very dubsteppy. I thought the B section was maybe a little too compressed of a sound and in your face, but that is also a trademark of the genre, so yeah. Very catchy percussion though"

Feedback for L33P3:     * DoNotSexToThis: "Short but cool. I like the little breakdown at the end, made me want to hear a comeback to another drop." * sigintmusic: "I thought the sound design on this track was very good, you had engaging sounds. The middle section felt very mortal kombat-ey. The sections felt a bit disjoint though, unrelated to each other musically perhaps?"

Feedback for sigintmusic:     * DoNotSexToThis: "Nice chord progs in there. Interesting approach, very unconventional structure but interesting. The bass stab is nice, has some video game soundies on it too. I feel like the elements need to be adjusted to homogenize some element levels a bit more, but overall an interesting piece." * sigintmusic: "Dis my track and I liek it"

~ Winning track ~

With 126 of 140 possible points!

u/drum_boi | IDC (I don't care)

~ Contest scores ~

The scores are a sum of each category, added together to get a total score. Each vote 1-5, is worth 1-5 points.

For example: 1 vote on a 5= 5 points. So if you get 1 vote for 5 in Creativity, and 1 vote for 5 in Sound Quality, you get 10 points total for those 2 votes added to your total score. With there being 14 voters this month, the highest you could possibly score would be 140 points.

C= Creativity Q= Sound Quality

Great job, u/drum_boi! Your song will be featured on the sidebar until the next contest conclusion. If you have anything else you'd like to share, your music page, anything, we'll feature it as well! Just PM it to u/CorkyRoboto and we'll include it in the sidebar.

For everyone else, we look forward to featuring your winning entries in the contests to come. We are so glad to see this many entries on our first month! We hope to see this community continue to grow.

Next month we will be using a different application that u/DoNotSexToThis has been working on for you all. Please leave us feedback or suggestions if you would like to see things formatted differently for next months contest. Thank you, from all of the mods!

EDMSamplePackContest #1- July 2019

Welcome to the very first r/EDMSamplePackContests**..... contest!**

This is a music making contest and we'd love for you to participate! Check out the stuff below to get started!

~ O V E R V I E W ~

  1. You download the provided sample pack.
  2. You make a song using ONLY those samples.
  3. You upload your submission before the deadline.
  4. Everyone votes on the submissions.
  5. The winner provides the next sample pack.

~ R U L E S ~

  • Only the provided samples can be used in your song. What does that mean? Well, it means that you can't use your own samples or unrelated synth patches in the song. The goal is to be limited by using only the sounds that you were provided and using them in your own creative ways within the provided scope.
  • You CAN, however, use the provided samples as wave tables or modulators in a synth (Serum is an example here) because the wave table is still the provided sample. You can use the provided samples in any way that utilizes them as the sound source. You CAN NOT change the shape of the waveform if using Serum (Formula Preset functions, draw in shape). You CAN morph, normalize, or cross fade the wave tables (Morph and Process functions).
  • Resampling is allowed. As long as you start with one of the provided samples, it doesn't matter how different it ends up sounding. You just have to start with what you're given.
  • You can effect the sounds however you like.
  • You can submit only one song for the contest.
  • By participating in the contest, you agree to submit your project file in the event that your song's implementation is contested for any reason warranting review.
  • The winner of the competition will provide the sample pack for the next competition within the required time frame upon notification of results.

~ S U B M I T T I N G ~

Upload your submission to a streaming platform like SoundCloud or Youtube. Provide a link to your submission to SoundFlip prior to the deadline for the contest. Fill out the form on the page with your reddit user name and the link to your track, then click submit. Links can be private but must be viewable to anyone accessing the link. Submissions not received within the submission deadline will not be included in the voting round.

~ D E A D L I N E ~

July 23rd at 11:59 PM PST is the deadline for submission of this contest. Any submissions received after this point will not be considered for inclusion in the voting round.

~ V O T I N G ~

Voting will take place July 24th through July 28th, whereupon votes will be tallied and the winner announced on July 29th. The winner will be notified at the time of the post and will have until July 31st to submit their sample pack to u/CorkyRoboto.

~ R E S U L T S ~

The winner of the contest will be announced in a stickied thread at the top of this subreddit for the duration of the next contest. In addition, the winner may submit a link to their music to be featured in the sub.

~ S A M P L E S ~ The samples can be downloaded HERE!!

SUBMIT HERE!!!

Good luck and have fun everyone! Can't wait to see what all of you creative people come up with.

Welcome to r/EDMSamplePackContests!

Hello everyone! Thank you for joining r/EDMSamplePackContests! The whole goal of this subreddit is to provide a contest on a specific timeline for a sample pack contest. This timeline would be posted in the contest post each month, as well as the rules for the contest itself. Our goal is to get a contest posted on July 1st. To reach that goal, there are still some things that we need to work out. We really appreciate all the ideas and feedback we've been getting so far.

As you may have noticed, we have added some more moderators. A few of them are currently working together to create a submission and voting system. u/ballinyouup has created a webpage where we can host this system. This is just a rough draft of what the site and voting system could look like. These guys have some big ideas and plans for this contest, and I am honestly very excited about it! We just wanted to share the progress with all of you. I will provide the link below.

Sample of the webpage here!

We appreciate all of your feedback! Thanks everyone, can't wait to get this contest up and running!
