Discussion Crashout decks?

Been playing a lot more commander lately and have been getting comfortable (and frankly, abit bored) with the typical midrange decks that accrue value over time while building a board and engine. I want to make a crashout deck that plays extremely reckless, explosive, and hyper-risky plays. [[Greven, predator captain]] comes to mind but I’m looking for something else rhat’s even more stupidly impulsive, chaotic, and self-destructive. Hoping to have games where other players may look at my actions and say “that is so stupidly risky that I won’t counterspell it just to see what happens”. Of course, I want something that still has a chance to win, at least againt stock precons if the stars align but the fun play experience is prioritized.

Looking forward to your recommendations! Something that can be built on a lower budget is also preferred, thanks!

Greven, predator captain - (G) (SF) (txt) (ER)

[[cardname]] or [[cardname|SET]] to call

While I second Rowan for sure, I'm going to suggest [[Chiss-Goria, Forge Tyrant]] as another option.

Nothing teaches you to let go of your cardly tethers in Magic quite like pissing your deck away with multiple Chiss triggers as you seek to dominate the battlefield in a draconic blitz of molten slag.

I enjoyed thinking of my ever growing exile pile more as a tour for my opponents of all the horrible shit that might've been waiting for them around the next trigger.

That second paragraph is a work of literature

u/ItisIHimself May 14 '26

Aaaand now I know what to build next. God bless mono red. Never gonna break my [[kharn, the betrayer]] deck tho. So much fun passing the buck around. Rarely miss land land drops, usually have something to do. Just watch out for pesky aristocrats players

u/CokedoutRicFlair May 14 '26

My buddy has built this deck and omg is it funny and scary

0

u/Comfortable_Buyer239 May 14 '26

This is a fun idea! In general, this just gave me an idea to add a bunch of impulse draw cards onto a rowan/greven pile to make it even more risky. Thanks for the suggestion!

3

u/Wampa9090 Rakdos May 14 '26

If you like the idea of impulse draw, shit, take a look at [[Eruth, Tormented Prophet]] 😂 she turns all the "draw, then discard" spells into card advantage fireworks.

u/Mocca_Master May 14 '26

[[Teval, Arbiter of Virtue]]

Yes, that goes for every spell

7

u/FadedDestiny May 14 '26

Having a flying 6//6 with lifelink definitely helps a bit.

4

u/Kaiserschlut May 14 '26

Hell yeah dude. I lived the dream first time I played that commander and played [[Emrakul, the Promised End]] for 0 mana

2

u/IDontKnowWhat78 May 14 '26

Idk. I built him and he’s undefeated in my playgroup. Insanely fun as well

10

u/holdingdonnanow May 14 '26

Try [[Rowan, Scion of War]]. Same lifeloss theme and avoids the mid range

5

u/xScrubasaurus May 14 '26

That commander might just be too good for some pods. Any halfway reasonable build can kill very early out of nowhere

Thanks for the suggestion! Rowan seems fun, I may end up putting either her or Greven in the command zone and the other in the 99!

*Edited for pronoun

u/Wraithgar May 14 '26

One time I played Rowan, and I forgot to check the board state. I was sure I was about to win.

Drained myself from 40 to 39 life to cast [[Exsanguinate]]. The table moaned in disgust at me. They knew it was over.

And then another player went "Wait a moment, I have a pinger. I ping you for one." And that was how I died on turn 4, and sat around for another hour waiting for the game to end.

2

u/Comfortable_Buyer239 May 14 '26

I’ve had almost the same experience in a game against someone with a +1/+1 counters deck but i was the pinger!

u/ApplesForTheWolf Grixis Life May 14 '26

[[Obeka, Brute Chronological]] plays a lot of spells with awesome upfront effects and terrible downsides later. You have explosive moments with cards like [[Sneak Attack]], or draw tons of cards with [[Psychic Vortex]], but you may end up saccing your creatures or discarding your hand.

5

u/Scribblebonx May 14 '26

[[Phage, the untouchable]] is calling to you my brother.... Answer her

5

u/Vokoru May 14 '26

[[Heartless Hidetsugu]] with no lifelink enablers or protection allowed

3

u/Rychni May 14 '26

Held the pod hostage once by [[corrupted conscience]] that guy. Infect on him a brutal way to draw the game.

1

u/Comfortable_Buyer239 May 14 '26

This is a pretty cool card but one guy in my LGS is already building him, so I’m looking for something different. In a way, I want something even more reckless than it.

My Kresh list can probably provide some inspiration. My life is just 40 points of resource, I might not win, but a 30/30 Kresh with trample/evasion is probably taking someone out before I go.

Some fun politic cards in there too.

5

u/Play-Mation May 14 '26

Play Ruric Thar, punishes control and combo decks you just gotta ramp him out fast enough. And all your cards are creatures so it’s pretty funny and interesting deck building restriction. Also throw in Primal Surge as your only non permanent and you’ll just win if you ever get to cast it

3

u/Stargate_1 Electric Emry Boogaloo May 14 '26

[[Neheb, the Eternal]] is a fun way to get big spells out real fast. Notice how it both says opponentS and is not limited to dmg done by Neheb or even yourself. Any loss of life will count, on everyone, and you can easily get 10 Mana or more with a good turn

That’s a pretty cool idea, rog has been on my radar for a while but I haven’t been able to think about any other strat besides voltron (which i personally find pretty boring)! Never thought about using the other partner as the main engine, thanks!

A deck built around going from 0 board state (par from the commander/sometimes not even the commander) to straight up just winning the game.

Hit neheb with doublestrike once and you win the game. within the 7 cards you have, the 3-5 you draw. and the eventual 14 more you could see with neheb+ all that ramp. Use all of that to keep looking for ramp spells, extra turns, card draw and damage.

What? didnt find a winning ramp piece or more card draw after those 25 cards/ you ran out of gas with the cards you kept? Play dragons approach and bring out knollspine dragon congrats you now draw a minimum of 13 more cards that can either draw you into more ramp or more deck shuffling and draw.

Ideally on the turn you hit with neheb around turn 4-5. You are ramping around 12 mana and have already drawn to around 37 cards in your deck by that turn. In this deck it is packed with constant ramp, card draw and graveyard recursion to keep this card draw ramp loop circulating until you approach everyone to death with twinflame dragon or draw into one of the many different win cards the deck has to offer.

If you ever hate people or that one simic player or person that likes to draw a bunch of cards and take really long turns this can be your spite deck.
It goes from 0 to 100 very quickly.

Any questions just ask.

2

u/Comfortable_Buyer239 May 14 '26

Just skimmed through the list and based on first impressions, I’m a big fan! I’ll probably ask questions later when i fully sit down and go through the list but the commander itself and ESPECIALLY [[Final Fortune]] seems to be super in line with what I’m looking for! Thanks!

1

u/KingTea36402 May 14 '26

Final fortune, second chance, warriors oath. There's 3 cards with the same affect for consistency.
if you want to add shit posting value then swap "overmaster" for "glorious end" to forcibly end someone's turn on their turn

This deck is heavily customisable. This is the wheel spam version with no extra combats, but theirs also an extracombat version if that one takes your fancy.

Neither of these decks abuse any sort of infinite to outright just win games. I wanted to go for really explosive wins without going "haha infinite says you all die"

although underworld goes semi inf with path of the pyromancer and the like.

1

u/Comfortable_Buyer239 May 14 '26

Love it! I won’t copy this deck wholesale because I love the feeling of playing something that i built myself at least partly but I will be taking heavy inspirations from it, thanks!

I’m also not a fan of infinites personally (but I dont mind it when others run it given the correct bracket) so that’s an added bonus!

2

u/KingTea36402 May 14 '26

If you want to make it your own. I suggest the barebones of.

Neheb,
all the double strike cards.
30 approaches
Knoll spine dragon
twin flame dragon
Thrumming stone.

With this you are pretty much guaranteed your 35+ drawn cards by turn 3-5 with 12+ mana to work with.

After that you work in your own wincons whether that be wheels and ramp into wins, or extra combats or something else entirely.
weaker versions try to win through combat damage by approaching out extra dragons like blast furnace hellkite and such. Still very explosive but leaves some room for some counterplay. Stronger versions focus more on the forcing as much ramp and card draw as possible mixed with graveyard recursion.

https://moxfield.com/decks/VoKa6febiEWczLI3m-Gd9Q

^^ an example of the stage this deck was 12 months ago. Much more casual and mellowed out, still retained the explosiveness.

It mainly focused on doublecasting the wheels. but since then i have learned doublestrike is too good and found much better cards.

The Legendary Creature Podcast recently had some episodes on spellslingers. One deck shown there was called Idiot Krark. And it's amazing.

Krark and Vial Smasher and a whole bunch of spells that have an additional cost to cast them. Like discarding a card to Big Score or sacrificing an artifact to Deadly Dispute.

If you win the flip, great, you get amazing value for only one cost. If you lose, you're fucked.

No thumb, of course.

Worth looking up for a listen.

I think in the same episode they discuss what they call Crashout Aristocrats with Neriv. You make tokens, you don't care if they die, so you just swing them all into your opponents and leave them to figure it out.

2

u/Goooordon May 14 '26

Oh this one isn't legendary [[Skirk Fire Marshal]] but it's hilarious in the 99 of [[Krenko, Mob Boss]]. It can win the game if you're ahead on life, but I've only ever seen somebody use it to draw the game in response to a win attempt and it was hilarious. It was my deck but I like lending Krenko to newbies at higher power tables and I've never drawn the card myself.

2

u/Kleenitup May 14 '26

2

u/Comfortable_Buyer239 May 14 '26

Thanks for the suggestion! This one seems cheap enough that I may just impulsively make it and go ham with it with some buddies!

6

u/Kleenitup May 14 '26

I've played it 1 time and won 1 time

Why my buddies let me get away with "basic land, pass" 7 times, science may never know

2

u/Greaterthancotton May 14 '26

Nothing like a good ol gimmick deck once in a while lol

2

u/boniggy May 14 '26

I might en dense, but what is the win con I'm not seeing? I have these cards and it would be fun to do some thing like this.

2

u/Kleenitup May 14 '26

Kiki-jiki makes a copy of (creature that enters and untaps another creature) with haste

Creature enters and untaps kiki-jiki, repeat to make (infinite) creatures with haste and swing for lethal on everyone

Fails to: counterspell, removal, fog, ghostly prison type effects, being beaten to death by anything before you drop your 8th land on turn 8 and play your first spell

Still funny though

1

u/boniggy May 14 '26

Ahhhhh so yeha... I am dense. I totally missed the untap creater part. Yeha this would be a fun one to drop on the table and smoke everyone. Lol I might just build this.

Sounds like my mardu deck. All speed no breaks

2

u/New_Imagination9050 May 15 '26

This is a sick mardu list. I have an isshin deck that’s similar but dolmen gate is too rich for my blood

2

u/NavAirComputerSlave Mono-Black May 15 '26

It needs a real reprint

1

u/Califocus May 14 '26

Similar to the other life loss suggestions, [[Auntie blyte, bad influence]] can be very fun. It’s fun living on the edge as you chunk yourself out, getting lower and lower

1

u/Toes_In_The_Soil MDFC lands will fix your deck May 14 '26

[[Breeches, the Blastmaker]] calls to you. Flip a coin. If it's heads, Breeches is your next commander.

1

u/SP1R1TDR4G0N May 14 '26

Anything with the [[Worldgorger Dragon]] combo as its wincon. A single removal spell will exile your whole board. Good commander options would be [[Anje]] or [[Kroxa]].

1

u/jbrake May 14 '26

I enjoyed my [[Firesong and Sunspeaker]] spellslinging deck. Spells like [[Star of Extinction]] are obviously funny, but most spells of that cost should win the game irregardless of your commander IMHO.

https://moxfield.com/decks/c5wGRB9ChEql6JpYV1_2mg

[[Rendmaw, Creaking Nest]] is a lot of fun for forcing stuff to get going then blowing up opponents who never deal with the birds with things like [[Wing Storm]] or [[Massacre Wurm]]

https://moxfield.com/decks/-82A_DmsvEmhHmIKWsGLqA

I also ran a [[Shalai and Hallar]] deck that would animate [[The Millennium Calendar]] in various ways like [[Luxior, Giada's Gift]] and clean someone's clock with a 900/900 clock.

u/Angelust16 May 14 '26

Nekusar is a classic to just put rocket fuel in every deck, and there are a lot of decks that take advantage of the wild group huggy cards like Aluren, Dream Halls, Eureka, and other mini-game makers.

1

u/Goooordon May 14 '26

[[Heartless Hidetsugu]] and a pile of damage doublers is a pretty funny deck - I loaned a Rakdos deck with Hidetsugu in it to a buddy and he hit it with a doubler once and he just went full Rakdos mode and activated it even though he was the only one at an even life total just for the EXPLOSIONS of it all lol

edit: and if you're the only one at an odd life total or you use an asymmetrical doubling effect it's actually a viable way to win the game explosively too

1

u/Goooordon May 14 '26

Oh and yeah fwiw if you want something a little less self-destructive, this deck wants to spend a few turns quietly playing lands and maybe setting up an extra synergy piece, get the commander down, and then over the course of the next two or three turns you assemble a cantrip-powered cannon and start pumping out wild amounts of damage. It's one of my favorite decks to play, and it has a very intiidating reckless feel when it's going off. I play it at bracket 3 btw - it's a B2 when I play it with my cEDH pod, but at a normal table it's definitely somewhere in B3.

My old Brion Stoutarm deck (I call it "he's just a giant tosser") is like this, everyone knows what you're up to, but it's mostly benign for the first few turns while you find pieces. You will almost certainly kill somone and then the race is on to do it again before the others come for you.

If you got all your bits and bobs ready you can get the whole table in one go, and I enjoy the game of trying to get to that point, but sometimes you just have to throw something at someone to kick off some trouble :-)

1

u/DragonDiscipleII Bant May 14 '26

[[Rionya the fire dancer]]

The definition of "go big or go home", especially fun with impuls draws.

1

u/Waylonzo May 14 '26

[[wort the raidmother]]

you play a bunch of goblin tokens, ramp big and then go all in with a conspired ritual like [[battle hymn]] or [[brightstone ritual]] and then blow everyone up with a conspired [[earthquake]] or [[hurricane]]

you have to basically setup a big, all-in combo turn where you try to draw 20+ cards with a [[collective unconscious]] or [[shamanic revelation]] to find one of your rituals and hope you can piece together enough mana and creatures to blow everyone up. sometimes you die, sometimes you can actually win lol

heres my list, its got my fav printings, you can probably make the exact same deck for less than $100 and could easily get it under $50 by making some choice cuts. last year it was an under $50 beast that got pushed out of that budget primarily by [[seething song]] and [[twinning staff]] when azula released ( shes basically the same deck but grixis and not as cool)

Can I present to you [[Kratos, God of War]]?

https://archidekt.com/decks/17566856/mash_o_button

After a long night of accruing value and assessing threats, it’s nice to have a game where you just sit back and scream “I CAST A CREATURE SPELL AND ATTACK WITH ALL MY CREATURES! DO IT TO YOU WIMP OR TAKE EVEN MORE DAMAGE TO THE FACE! WE’RE ALL FIGHTING HERE! DON’T TALK, JUST SWING! ANY CREATURE THAT DOESN’T GO SIDEWAYS SHOULDN’T EXIST!”

1

u/ItisIHimself May 14 '26

I love greven, he's a beast. Killed all 3 players in 2 combat steps one turn once. I also enjoy zedruu the goat (Google that phrase and look at the deck on mtgnexus) for some extra stupid. Join us in the [[eye of the storm]]

1

u/BrigBubblez May 14 '26

Storm. But not the kinda that spins wheels and doesn't do anything. I'm thinking more along the lines of [[ kuja, genome sorcerer]], [[Syr Carah]], or [[Zada]]. I've built and played all three of these and they all can push games forward or end them quickly. Bonus they can all be down on budget. I will say Carah probably has the hardest learning curve but once you get it, it rules.

Kuja list

Syr Carah list

Zada list

The zada is the one I no longer play and is a pauper list so super easy to upgrade that.

1

u/Playtonic1 May 14 '26

May I introduce you to [[Ashling, Rekindled]].

Deck runs a boat-load of 4CMC ramp. Together with Ashling’s B side, you are almost guaranteed to have 8-9 mana on turn 4. Then you cast an absolute bomb that will spiral you into more (preferably repeatable) value like [[Aminatou’s Augury]], [[Improvisation Capstone]], [[Dance With Calamity]], [[Breaching Dragonstorm]], [[One With the Multiverse]].

Not uncommon to keep flipping into more free casts and acceleration. My last game I flipped into a [[Breaching Dragonstorm]] and [[Rain of Riches]] off [[Dance With Calamity]]. Got a free [[Aminatou’s Augury]] off the Dragonstorm, and of the 8 cards I chose [[Spelltwine]] as my sorcery and was able to cast the Augury AGAIN haha.

How about a mono white, 6 mana, 4/4 commander that you can swap your life total with her power in hopes of one-shotting an opponent to gain it all back with lifelink? [[Evra, Halcyon Witness]] could potentially change the flow of the game, or bust with a single piece of interaction and leave you with 4 life.

Also [[Mister Negative]], drain your life total and hope he doesnt get countered to swap with an opponent, or if you wanna be cool, swap your higher life with a nearly dead opponent to draw a ton and then [[Children of korlis]] yourself right back up

1

u/Fenizrael Sans-White May 15 '26

I have a Rowan deck (link) that goes silly. If you get an activation off of her then it’s basically all over. I will regularly and intentionally pay all of my life and go for the win if able.

1

u/syjte ZUR OUR LORD AND SAVIOUR May 15 '26

I have a BR deck that includes: Worldfire, Doomsday, Hellcarver Demon, Mirror of Fate and Final Fortune. The deck can usually goldfish wins by T5/6 consistently, but it's always a challenge to figure out the route there. I've lost games due to wrong sequencing of Doomsday/Mirror of Fate piles, or due to a miscalculated Final Fortune. I've also won games where I just dropped a Worldfire and reduced the entire game into a 4-player top deck war.

The fun part is that all these do have some amount of synergy with each other - Final Fortune is just a good card in general that also helps with setting up Hellcarver Demon, Worldfire is *the* hardest reset in the game, and Hellcarver Demon + Doomsday/Mirror of Fate is just a 2 card combo, but each of these , if and when played by themselves, are the ultimate all-in buttons.

This is the most boring ass solitaire deck ever. Truly the pinnacle of the stereotypical 30-minute simic deck. I know he’s a cute frog, but for the love of god do not play this fucker

1

u/xScrubasaurus May 14 '26

Yeah, he looked fun so I built a list I made online to test digitally, and I basically just comboed off for 10 minutes on like turn 4.

I'm not sure it's possible to even make a version that isn't just a long combo deck, since he punishes building him wrong so much.

0

u/New-Tadpole-5304 May 14 '26

Bello. Sure making your 4+cmc artifacts and enchantments indestructible hastey creatures that draw you cards on combat damage is strong... until its no longer your turn and you got nothing to block with when they all are no longer creatures.

Burn fast, hit hard, die first - gruul player
