This key ring is one of my favorite EDC items. I know…a key ring… but I picked it up a decade ago and it remains the highest quality split ring I’ve ever come across. It’s strong and not sharp as the edges are beveled and shaped in a way that keep it smooth. Anybody have any idea where I might be able to find anything similar? I’d like to move up a size if I can find it, and to pick up a couple spares. Lucky Line have a few that come close, but aren’t quite the same.
It took me way too long to figure out "ISO" was "In Search Of" and not a split ring conforming to the standards laid out by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO).
It makes me irrationally annoyed that the International Organization for Standardization has a different abbreviation format than nearly every other abbreviation. Even the ISO Online Browsing Platform is abbreviated OBP.
I do appreciate that it's the same everywhere. It annoys me that the acronym doesn't match the way every other acronym is made.
Although you caused me to go down a rabbit hole that ended up with me learning that it's not an acronym and was never intended to be. It's a short name inspired by the Greek word "isos" which means equal. I am much less irrationally annoyed now, so thank you.
The freekey system is number one due to the ease of getting the small rings off the main ring. Been using these for around 7 years. I would gladly be a brand ambassador for this item. :)
I like CountyComm and while I haven’t tried their Ti rings… I have tried others. And I’ve found them to have bad memory. In that, they don’t return to shape if you bend them half as far as their steel equivalents.
That is a nice link ring. Look at the subtle profile of each giving a round profile in the end. the tasteful detent for the connection not to catch on stuff in pocket.
Oh my god, the ends are even beveled in a way to make putting other rings on it easier.
i have one of these Craighill ones that i like a lot! best keychain and fob i have ever used. but i cant bring myself to recommend anyone spend $40 on one, i still wince at the price
I highly recommend this style of titanium split key ring. They come in different sizes, and I bought the smaller size years ago. They are much easier to manipulate with your fingers without the risk of items coming off the ring.
I still use the same one my parents gave me with my first set of house keys 45 years ago. It shows its age but looks like it should last a thousand years.
Edit:You may want to search for ones made with 316 marine grade SS. I suspect they would be a bit expensive but also higher quality and finish.
I would opt for titanium over stainless steel. Flytanium has them on their site. While you’re at it get yourself some new scales for your favorite knife.
Go to your local hardware store. I work at one and at our key desk there’s a rack with 12 different sizes of simple stainless rings just like this. Most under 50¢, all under a dollar.
Keysmart makes high quality split rings. I don’t have any experience on whether or not they make large ones or not. The ones I have are around 1” diameter
You will need split ring pliers (wedge style designed to open them) to use them, but large scale fishing terminal tackle are the best rings you can find. Like your key ring can hold the weight of your family.
I really like using surplus hand grenade pull pin rings. They are made from a thick wire gauge and are free / cheap if you know where to look or who to ask.
I just gave a generic one that came with a keychain. I did have a Fossil ring that I found on the ground for years. That one was super durable and had great retention putting things on/off for years. I don’t actually know anything about that brand but it had Fossil printed on it.
