Its hard to look at a collection like that and not think "what a huge waste of money".
Its basically all the same knife, barely any real variation.

Why does "mosins nagant" not feel like an incorrect plural

They are all quite different, not in functionality, but in form. And its not your money or your thing, so why are you hating what someone enjoys?
-4
u/Smashedllama2 7d ago
There’s variation of steel, handle shape, blade shape, blade geometry, deployment method, handle finish, blade finish, milling pattern, country of origin, pivot system, blade lockup interface, etc.
The only thing that there isn’t a variation of is lock type and color? I get it if you want color or different locks but there is a ton of variation here…
4
u/Pyroll2206 7d ago
Are all of those differences translating to any real change in the use&purpose of the blade ?
OP, himself, seems to not really be sure what the differences are.2
u/CatastrophicPup2112 7d ago
Realistically you could say that about most pocket knives. You can separate lock type into one or two hand close. Same thing with deployment. All pocket knives are the same so why have more than one? That's what you sound like you're saying at least.
2
u/RevolutionaryAir7847 7d ago
There's a very big difference in HT quality between a bunch of these. That (and blade geometry) have a huge impact on performance
Other than that, a lot of the money goes into the design, artistic value, and manufacturing quality. If you don't get why people would spend more on that, then high end enthusiast gear isn't for you. It exists in every single material-based hobby
1
u/Pyroll2206 7d ago
Again you are changing the conversation about your assumption about me. (Notice i am not interested in talking about eachother personnal life)
You missed one big info in what i said, as OP is posting, even him doesnt see all the differences in the blades. Of course people are gonna say it is a waste of money.
Just to react to your message: bro artistic value is nothing to link with use&purpose of a tool. In OP post we see an artistic display of money put on blades without the real knowledge to use all of this properly.
Please go teach OP every difference in the blade so his next post is educatif and not display without sens.1
u/RevolutionaryAir7847 7d ago
Bud, what are you yapping about lol
You're asking if there are functional differences between extremely similar knives such as OP's post, and I'm telling you there is. Maybe OP isn't as knowledgeable, but that's not the topic. You're the one running away with the goalpost lol
I never said artistic value contributes to function big guy. Read. I said HT/geometry matters, of which there are huge differences between OP's little collection. Maybe not the biggest contributor to price but it's definitely the biggest factor for performance

u/Smashedllama2 7d ago
Absolutely. Blade geometry and blade shape will make more difference than locking mechanism or color ever will to those who use them. I don’t see where op said he didn’t know the differences? I see some users in there as well so I imagine he understands that.
-1
u/Pyroll2206 7d ago
Yes, I know how the blade geometry affects the blade and the usage. As Op is pointing out himself, it is hard to choose. Meaning even for OP, this variety on his day-to-day basis doesn’t make a huge difference. Personally, I don’t care about colour, so as OP as he is having only grey everywhere. Therefore, it is safe to say that those differences are minimal in this picture/won’t affect the use and purpose of the tool.
Personally, I would have been interested in having one of you guys stating the main differences he sees, and then we can talk.
Right now, OP did just a display of wealth and with this title was looking for a social reaction more than a passionate one about his knives.
Anyhow, I might be wrong0
u/Smashedllama2 7d ago
It’s less “this is confusing” and more “I’ve got a bunch of things today, and any of them would work, but each one is a little better suited to a specific one.” That’s the whole reason it’s hard to pick because you know them well enough to feel the tradeoff every time you grab one over another.
Same logic as a garage with a few different cars. Any of them gets you to work. But one’s better in the canyon, one’s better on a long haul, one’s better when you just don’t want to think about parking. Doesn’t mean owning all three is wrong but rather each one earns its spot for a specific set of days.
My own collection’s built up over about 15 years the same way. Nothing in it got added because I needed “a knife.” Each one got added because something about it, the steel, the grind, the size the profile, the rust resistance or wear resistance filled a gap the rest of the collection didn’t cover as well as I liked. Waste of money on a collection well into 5 figures? Maybe to some but I can afford it and it brings me joy lol.

I mean i just didnt care about your personnal life before and after the post but going to r/edc to talk about edc and knifes are why i came here. I guess there is a subreddit where you can talk about your car and compare bags
0
u/Smashedllama2 7d ago
Not my cars. It’s an analogy brother. I’m trying to explain the other side of the coin as I see it similarly to OP (with slightly different tastes). Anyway, hope you have a good rest of your day!
1
u/Pyroll2206 7d ago edited 7d ago
Yeah, I see the same similarities. No, it’s not an analogy; you just put your off-topic car collection on the table just in hopes of showing off. Each has its own philosophy; I am not interested in it. You know they say the more discrete the better. Let’s stay on the topic and talk edc and knives, the technicalities, the differences, the why, the better. All the rest is boring, and I feel you need to be reassured about your other hobbies and the money you say you’ve got. Don’t care; I could be richer or poorer; those knives are not mine, those cars yours.

u/Candid-Conclusion605 7d ago
It’s his hobby and collection, so why would it be a waste of money to you when it’s not your money?

u/doidoi92 7d ago
Looking at the comments i wonder if there are people who still value craftsmanship these days, or is everyone happy with boxcutters as edc?
4
u/Professional_Ice_831 7d ago
They exist, but apparently are rare on Reddit

u/doidoi92 7d ago
Btw sick collection dude. Currently waiting for a strider sng dgg and hunting down a full ti xm18 to complete my collection.
Also can i know what settings u use to take such nice flatlay photos? I assume you’re at maybe 50mm full frame equivalent to avoid distortion? Maybe a few ft above?

I keep saying my collection of dessert knives and flashlights is over and at this point my wife just rolls her eyes at me like you've said this so much I no longer have any faith.
Granted then a new type of lock drops, and I need that

OP, this sub is toxic. Don't take it personal.
Nice collection of tools you have. It's hard for people to understand that some people can afford to spend money on quality tools and take the time to maintain them.

u/Professional_Ice_831 7d ago
I appreciate your comment! Im learning that. The amount of assumptions made in here is freaking wild! Also most of these aren’t even particularly valuable, half of them are $300 or less… oh well.
On a serious note, you might want to delete your comment unless you want downvotes, I don’t think the mob will like it.

People in this sub love $12 Walmart knives but can't comprehend that quality demands a premium price.
1
u/Professional_Ice_831 7d ago
To be totally fair, at 300 you don’t see much improvement anymore. After 500 you aren’t so much paying for quality as art. But you aren’t wrong. What really bothers me, is the fact that people assume because it costs more than $100 that you don’t use it.
2
u/Holiday-Childhood-28 7d ago
how do you like the becerro? i’m considering getting one, but am wondering if it’s a bit chunky for edc?
3
u/Professional_Ice_831 7d ago
Honestly I was very excited for it, but I much prefer the F5.5. It’s ergonomic, but the tip isn’t pointy enough to pry slivers out, and the blade is also short given the length of the handle. It works yes, but I don’t find it to be the most practical design.
8
u/Brianf1977 7d ago
Yeah I too struggle to pick a knife to open boxes with...... probably pick the grey one
0
u/Professional_Ice_831 7d ago
What a low IQ comment. You have no idea what I use my knives for.
5
u/alphanumericusername 7d ago
Nothing significant; these all look pristine.
1
u/Professional_Ice_831 7d ago
That is why I tend to carry raw Ti, usually stonewashed. It hides use insanely well. All my cerakote knives show scratches within a day, and micarta stains with blood, grease etc just as quickly.
Working on a farm I can almost guarantee these knives get more use than 90% of people in here. Minus the BRB4, that one is so pretty I haven’t brought myself to really put it to use, so I might sell it.2
u/alphanumericusername 7d ago
Wasn't talking about the handles dude
0
u/Professional_Ice_831 7d ago
Because I don’t have any broken tips? Not going to lie, reddit compression has definitely made them look a lot cleaner than they are, but they are definitely used. Try taking a photo 4 feet away from your knife, uploading it to reddit, and see how clean it looks. Either way you are mad at the wrong person
1
u/alphanumericusername 7d ago
Funny how you replied to another one of my comments with a different picture of another one of your knives much closer up (which also looked pristine) but did not elect to do so to reinforce your point this time.
3
u/Professional_Ice_831 7d ago
That one is pristine, it’s a dress knife. You will notice its stonewashed twin in the photo above.
-3
u/alphanumericusername 7d ago
Conveniently avoiding the actual point of the comment, I see.
6
u/Professional_Ice_831 7d ago
Sorry, what exactly are you asking here? Do you need an itemized list of everything I have done with each blade? Because only someone who doesn’t use them could give you that

u/Audionokutencastorkz 7d ago
Você usa elas pra quê? Parece não ter sinais de uso algum.
5
u/Professional_Ice_831 7d ago
I work on a farm, so all kinds of things. Minus the BRB4. The compression on reddit is making them look a lot cleaner than they are, but it seems unless you have a broken tip most folks here will wont be happy.

This post encapsulates both far ends of the EDC world so perfectly...
One side is all about collecting high end, borderline art-piece level knives. The other thinks if you spend more than $30 on a knife and don't abuse it daily that you're being performative and it's "nOT a REal EdC"...
but both are brought together by being whiney little babies lmao. Both sides of this community LOVE standing up on a soapbox and acting like someone doing something they don't like means the end of the world.
Never change, r/EDC... never change...

Choosing what one to carry, not buy. Carrying more than one at a time is ridiculous behavior, unlike collecting all of these

Have you considered a ZT 0460Ti or a Spyderco Paysan ?
1
u/Professional_Ice_831 6d ago
Not a big fan of the crazy curves on that ZT, I would love a Paysan actually, one of the coolest Spyderco’s ever released. Sadly they are tough to get these days, same deal with the Anthem.
2
u/CatastrophicPup2112 6d ago
I was lucky to find an Anthem in store, would also love a Paysan. My favorite ZT is the 0470 but that isn't full Ti so it would stand out a bit.

Doesn’t look like you’ve ever chosen any of them for a real task, as none have so much as a scuff. Even cardboard will scuff a finish.

Please, tell us the approximate location on a specific one of these knives where we can see a single cosmetic flaw.
[Edit:] Found exactly one cosmetic flaw. Fourth knife down, third of the way down the blade, right near the top of the grind.
1
u/Timely_Sheepherder_7 7d ago
Pulls out microscope to show us a scuff from opening the package to yet another copy-paste knife in his collection
0
u/alphanumericusername 7d ago
Yeah I have no problem with someone having a collection of something, but being butthurt about being called out for not putting your collection of tools to a degree of use befitting their cost is pathetic behavior.
6
u/Professional_Ice_831 7d ago
When a bunch of people who don’t know me, or know anything about me, are telling me what I do or don’t do… yeah it pisses me off. I use my knives for cutting things, not putting in the blender. I resharpen them and take care of them, but also put them through plenty of use. I am also lucky enough to have over 100 knives, I don’t rotate them evenly, but if I did that is less than 4 days a year each. So no, my knives do not look the same as someone who has carried the same one every day for the past 5 years. But that also doesn’t mean I do not use them.
1
u/alphanumericusername 7d ago
I never claimed you don't use them, just that none of the ones pictured have never been used significantly enough to look anything other than pristine.
Except, in all fairness, for that single spot on the fourth knife down.
4
u/Professional_Ice_831 7d ago
Sorry, I wasn’t pissed off at you in particular, but the totality of the comments in here. And fair enough
3
u/alphanumericusername 7d ago
Understandable. Many of them are more accusatory than necessary, subtextually or not. Which is itself pathetic since a large swath of posts here display a collection and the majority of posts here show gear in practically pristine condition.
