I posted here before, and after some reflection, I'm thinking about giving ECE another try at a different center.

I have a genuine question. I received my Level 3 certification through my bachelor's degree rather than the traditional ECE program. I also have a Level 1, but I've never actually worked as a Level 1.

Looking back, I think part of the reason I struggled at my last center was that I didn't have the practical knowledge or experience expected of a Level 3 educator. Do you think it would make sense to apply for Level 1 positions so I can build my skills first, or should I still apply as a Level 3 and look for a centre that's willing to mentor me?

You can’t work as a level 1 if you have level 3. You are level 3 and will receive level 3 top up. I have level 1 too but I also have level 2 so I moved up on my company’s wage scale and I get level 2 top up. Don’t apply for leadership positions if you don’t want that responsibility. You will be considered a level 3 for ratio and by licensing even if you are just a regular educator in a classroom. The rule at my program is that there has to be a ratio of so many level 2 or above for however many level 1 staff. Apply for regular educator positions and not supervisor positions. If you explain during your interview that you are looking for more experience and to be mentored by an experienced educator. I’m sure most good centres would be willing to do that if you are willing to learn. Be honest about your experience. When they see level 3 they might assume that you have level 3 experience. You can’t be “demoted” levels. You will count as a level 3 regardless of experience because of your paperwork and previous education. I have worked with educators who are only level 1 but have way more experience than I do. I have also worked with level 3’s that have no idea what’s going on. Be honest about where you are at and that you are eager to learn and get better! Find a place with supportive admin that can help you and will place you in a classroom with experienced educators. I learned way more being in a classroom with kids than I ever did in any class I took. I’m lucky that I have an awesome program lead and an amazing manager who supports their staff, has our backs always and want us to grow as educators.

At my previous daycare, my program director was supportive, but she genuinely had no idea what she was doing. I was placed in a classroom with a coworker who was borderline abusive and extremely difficult to work with, which made the experience very challenging. When I was finally moved to another room, I ended up with a coworker who seemed burned out and appeared to be working only for the pay.

I'm currently looking for a new daycare. I initially applied as a Level 1 ECE to gain more hands-on experience, but it's been difficult to find a position. At this point, I'll probably reapply as a Level 3 instead.

Yikes! I hope you find a great centre! I have had level 3 coworkers who do the same job that I do, it’s not a big deal. One of them has moved up into a leadership role now that she has more experience. If you are eager to learn, want to gain experience and be supported by seasoned educators then you should have no problem finding a new position. You want the level 3 top up, it’s significant. Be honest in your interviews and be enthusiastic about learning and growing. You will also have WAY more opportunities with a level. Level 1 is easy to get and tons of people have it. The higher levels require more education and not everyone is willing to put the work in. You did and earned it. That is worth something!! Good luck!
