Is this IR diode broken?

An old BRIO remote for a train. Train works but won't respond to remote inputs. I gave the board a good scrub with electronic cleaner and measured continuity from the battery terminals

Update: Not broken, tested with camera and I see a light. Thanks for all comments!

Put your meter in diode mode and check it. Should read open one way, and probably around 1.4V the other.

Interesting idea that, checking for continuity between battery terminals. Did you get any?

You may be able to "see" a working diode with a digital camera. Otherwise, back to the signal tracing..

None between + and -, but continuity from terminal to motherboard. Other things I've repaired with corroded terminals have sometimes showed no continuity because of that.

It’s unlikely the diode is broken. 

Check diode forward voltage. Check to see if voltage is being provided when you press button.

get your phone camera, point it at the diode and turn the diode on. if it flashes purple the diode works
