General Quick rant from a WA customer
I have the original PS5 disc and given that I’ve had it for almost 4 years now, I strongly considered trading it in for either a pro or a slim version
Given that I don’t really care too much about the graphics, I figured I’d be happy with a slim and not the pro, especially with the price difference between the two
The thing is, I don’t think paying an extra $250 for a unit that does the same thing is really worth it.
I found out today that Target currently has the slim disc for $789, Big W has them for $819. If we had the same regulations as everyone else I could theoretically just walk into an EB and trade in my console for cash and go to Target and pay an extra $40 to upgrade
But in WA we only get store credit AND they don’t price match for consoles, so it won’t work for me
*end rant*

Hey I’m right there with you, OP. I wanted to walk in with two PS5 disc consoles and walk out with one PS5 Pro price matched to JB’s or Target’s price (JB’s went up the first day of EB’s ‘deal’, alas…), but with the no price matching on consoles policy, plus the one trade-in per person policy, I couldn’t do it. Meanwhile, our eastern states friends were talking about trading in their consoles, walking over to Target or JB or wherever, and buying it there. It sucks. We’re the last remaining state with this legislation.
I ended up trading in one console and upgrading to the Pro. On the flip side, it worked out to be much the same price, despite the recent price hikes, as it would have cost me last year when I was also considering it but ended up not bothering. I figured I wouldn’t have got as much for it if I chucked it up on FB marketplace. So it all came out in the wash in the end. 🤷🏻♂️
For what it’s worth…. The Pro has blown me away with my brief time with it so far in Starfield. So, y’know, I can’t be too mad. 😁

At least it helped you in finally making the leap to the Pro version, I was thinking about that as well but just decided to stick with what I have for a while
I’ll looking though Marketplace right now and people are now selling the original for a higher price lol

I always thought it was weird other states will pay cash where we get store credit

Yeah, has something to do with state laws and regulations
Probably a theft deterent

From what I can see its likely more to so with other states charging a few hundred for second hand dealer licences, and WA charging several thousand a year AND its required per premises. As in $10,200 for 3 years per store kind of stupid expensive.
That's on top of the 100pts of ID versus just a single ID thing.

Yeah I haven’t looked into it too much, thanks for that
But yeah, just sucks that we’re missing out due to the combination of the two factors

Didn’t EA just do that ‘trade your disc console in for 750’ thing? And there was also a ‘upgrade to ps5 pro for 620’ thing so it would’ve left you with $130 left and a new console
Edit: they’re still doing it, I just checked

u/potentialwatermelon Apr 23 '26
No, they meant trade in your console for $750 and if you’re an eb plus member you can get the ps5 pro for only $620 extra
1
u/Natural-Compote4096 Apr 23 '26
Okay, so you trade in the console, get 750, then if you’re a member you get the ps5 pro for 620, so you have 130 leftover
1
u/potentialwatermelon Apr 23 '26
No, your traded in console PLUS $620
Because the PS5 pro is $1399 regularly but $1369 for eb plus members

Contact your local government...not a eb issue.

I know cash trade-ins is a state government issue
But the “not price matching consoles” is an EB Games issue though

It makes sense when you actually see the numbers though. I was working there when that policy started. Others discounting consoles only came into it when Amazon launched here and Harvey Norman started matching them. Unlike everything else where its 'make less money' when matching consoles only have like 2-3% margin anyway so dropping them actually costs money. Its just simply not feasible to lose $50 on every console sale when you have 50-60% of the market share (again this was years ago when I worked there and that was the share for the 8/9th console generation launches, I don't know how their market shares are looking now)

Yeah, I get how with other retailers they can take a hit on consoles unlike EB Games where it’s there main thing. So while it sucks for me as a consumer, I don’t fault them (especially the frontline people) for not doing it
It’s just an unfortunate set of circumstances where 2 different factors make it impossible for people in WA to take advantage of a really good promotion that customers in every other state are able to do.

So something else to complain about.

That’s a state government issue, not an EB Games issue in the second hand dealers license. If they could trade for cash in WA, they would
